The narrator of this incident is Hadrat Sayyiduna Jafer As Saa’i – may Allah be pleased with him – who mentions that Hadrat Sayyiduna Aamir bin Abde Qais – may Allah be pleased with him – was one of the most supreme Saints of his era. He had made it compulsory upon himself that he will perform a thousand Nawafil every day. He used to be occupied in Nawafil from the time of Ishraq until Asr. When he used to return home, his knees and feet were swollen. In fact, it used to look like it would burst open at any time. Yet, in spite of this immense Ibadah, Hadrat Sayyiduna Aamir bin Abde Qais – may Allah be pleased with him – used to address himself and say, “O that carnal desires which create all types of desires in man! you have been created to worship Allah and I will continue to make so much of Ibadah that you will not have one moment of break and will keep you away from rest and keep you busy all the time (in Ibadah).”

One day, Hadrat Sayyiduna Aamir bin Abde Qais – may Allah be pleased with him – came to a certain valley which was noted to have very dangerous animals living in it. In this same valley, there was also a Saint from Abyssinia who also spent all his time in Ibadah. The name of this Saint was Humammah. Both of these Saints spent the next few days in this valley but did not meet each other. In fact, they lived in opposite sides of this valley. Their habit was that after they had completed their Fard Salaah, they busied themselves in Nafil Ibadah. In this manner, they spent forty days in this valley without meeting each other.

After forty days, Hadrat Sayyiduna Aamir – may Allah be pleased with him – went to meet the other Saint. After greeting him, he asked him, “O servant of Allah! May Allah have mercy on you! Who are you?”

Humammah replied, “Do not concern yourself about me.”

However, Hadrat Sayyiduna Aamir – may Allah be pleased with him – insisted on knowing who he was.

The other Saint replied that his name was Humammah.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Aamir – may Allah be pleased with him – then declared, “If you are the same Humammah about whom I have been informed, then certainly you are the greatest worshipper on earth at this moment. What is the secret quality within you through which you have attained this greatness?”

However, Humammah replied with humility, “I am extremely lazy and full of faults (and there is nothing excellent about me). However, if there was no Sajdah and Qiyam in the Fard Salaah, then I would spent my entire life in Ruku and would never raise my head towards the sky until my time on earth ceases. I also have the urge to meet my Creator in this state. However, what can I do? One has to make Qiyam and Sajdah in the Fard Salaah. Please inform me, who you are.”

I replied, “My name is Aamir bin Abde Qais”.

When he heard this name he declared, “You are the Aamir bin Abde Qais about whom I have heard is the greatest worshipper of his time. Please inform me about that special quality within you through which you have attained this high rank.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Aamir – may Allah be pleased with him – displayed immense humility and then replied, “I am myself very lazy and inefficient. Yes, one thing is certain that immense fear and awe for Allah Almighty has established itself in my heart and because of this, I have fear for nothing whatsoever. I only fear Allah Almighty and no one else”

While this eminent Saint were mentioning these words, he was surrounded by very dangerous animals. In fact, one of these animals actually jumped on his back. However, he displayed no fear or apprehension whatsoever. He continued to read the Qur’an in all of this commotion. After a few minutes, all of these animals departed from that spot without harming him in the least bit.

After witnessing this amazing scene, Hadrat Humammah – may Allah be pleased with him – asked him, “What you saw, you did not experience any fear and apprehension?”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Aamir – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I feel ashamed that I should display fear for anything or anyone except Allah Almighty.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Humammah – may Allah be pleased with him – then declared, “What can we do, we have been tested with these stomachs of ours through which we have to eat and drink and release ourselves. If this was not the case, Allah Almighty would have always found me in a state of Ruku or Sajdah.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Humammah – may Allah be pleased with him – was such an eminent Saint that during the night and day, he used to perform eight hundred rak’ah of Nafil Ibadah and still, he used to scold himself by saying that he was extremely lazy and inefficient. (Uyunul Hikaayah)

Imagine for one minute the immense humility of the great Awliyah and at the same time, their fear for Allah. Imagine someone performing a thousand or eight hundred rak’ah of Salaah a day where they achieve no rest or respite at all. We can only wonder at these eminent creation. In fact, they even regret having to eat because this itself will make them loose precious time which they could spend in Ibadah. In spite of this, they still admit that they are doing nothing.

When we look at these eminent souls, we should then inspect ourselves. Leave aside the performance of Nafil Ibaaah, we do not even perform the Fard on time. And if ever we perform a little Ibaaah, suddenly we consider ourselves as one of the greatest Saints of our era. If ever we display humility, it is nothing but name-sake humility so that others would be impressed. If we kiss the hand of someone, we do it with the intention that he would kiss our hand in return. We make Du’a that Allah Almighty gives us the strength to follow the blessed path of the Awliyah. Ameen.
