Hadrat Sayyiduna Auf bin Maalik – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that, “Once Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – performed a Janazah Salaah and I had memorised the Du’a (which one makes after the third Takbeer). The Du’a was:

“O Allah! Pardon his sins, have Mercy on him, (in other words accept his Ibadah and obedience). Keep him in peace, ignore his failings and welcome him (in Jannah). Expand his grave and allow him to be purified through water, through ice and snow like how a white piece of cloth is cleaned from impurity. Give him a better dwelling in the Hereafter than his dwelling in this (world). Give him a better family than the (family in this world). Give him a better wife (than the wife in this world). Allow him to enter Jannah and (save him from the) punishment of the grave or (it was also said) from the fire of hell.”

In another narration it is mentioned that, “He should be protected from the fitna of the grave.” (In other words, he must be able to answer the questions of the Angels and protected from the punishment of Hell).

Hadrat Sayyiduna Auf bin Malik – may Allah be pleased with him – mentions, “When I heard this Du’a from the blessed lips of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then I certainly became very envious and without thinking I was hoping that it would have been me and that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – had made Du’a.” (Sahih Muslim, Ibn Maja, Nisaa’i)

A dua for the deceased.

Hadrat Sayyidah Umme Salmah – may Allah be pleased with her – narrates that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – appeared in (front of her first husband) after he had passed away. His eyes were open and Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – closed his eyes. He then declared, “When a person passes away, his sight also disappears.”

The family of Abu Salamah – may Allah be pleased with him – then realised that he had passed away. All them then began to wail and cry but Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – warned them, “Make Du’a for goodness for oneself (and not wailing and screaming and crying), because whatever good or bad words you utter, (at this time), the Angels say ‘Ameen’ to those words.”

He then made the following Du’a: “O Allah, please forgive Abu Salamah and increase his rank among those who are guided and as for those whom he has left behind, may he become a means for them (to be successful). O the Lord of both worlds, forgive us and him and expand his grave and make his grave full of light.” (Sahih Muslim Shareef, Abu Daud)
