It is reported that the Governor of Iraq during the time of Hadrat Sayyiduna Zaid bin Zainul Aabideen – may Allah be pleased with them – was a tyrant named Yusuf bin Umar Saqafi who was placed in this position by the Ummayad leader Hishaam Abdul Malik Ummawi.

In his greatest act of tyranny, he accused Hadrat Sayyiduna Zaid – may Allah be pleased with him – of treason and had him hanged. In fact another act of Kufr of this person was that he had this eminent member of the Ahle Bayt not only hanged but made sure that his blessed body had no clothes on. However, everyone saw two miracles occur at this moment. Firstly, a spider appeared and made a large cob web around his private area with the result that no one could see the private area. Secondly, when his blessed body was hung from the rope, his body automatically turned towards the Qiblah. So angry was the Governor when he saw this, that he had the blessed body burnt. (Tafseer Ruhul Bayan, 3/433)

There is no doubt that the spider seems to be a small and extremely delicate creature, however, many times in history, it has displayed immense greatness. It is recorded that when Nabi Daud – peace be upon him – went into hiding while he was been hunted by Jalut, the spider also appeared on this occasion and built a large web around the body of Nabi Daud – peace be upon him.

We also know the story during the blessed migration of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – when a spider made a web at the entrance of the cave of Thur. By so doing, the people searching for them were completely confused. (Ruhuni Hikaayah)
