We have explained a few issues about the eminent scholar and Saint, Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Jubair – may Allah be pleased with him – before. This is merely a further extract in this regard.
The blessed Saint lived in Kufah. Hence, he also a Asadi. Among the Taaba’een, he was considered as one of the greatest scholars and Saints. In the science of Hadith, Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Jubair – may Allah be pleased with him – was lucky to have been taught by such stars in Islam as Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn ‘Umar, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair – may Allah be pleased with them.
Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Jubair – may Allah be pleased with him – was also the student of many other blessed Ashaab as well. In fact, the list of his students is also quiet lengthy. Every night, he used to complete one Qur’an and at night, besides the Dhikr of Allah Almighty, he mentioned nothing else. At the same time, Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Jubair – may Allah be pleased with him – used to condemn certain oppressive rulers of the Ummayad Dynasty both publicly and privately. He did not display one ounce of fear. This is the reason that the tyrant Hujjaj bin Yusuf had him martyred in the month of Shaban in 95 A.H.
We know that Hujjaj bin Yusuf was the Governor of Kufah at the time. In fact, the conversation which took place just before he was martyred is also something which would prove very beneficial to the Muslim public.
This is the record of the conversation.
Hujjaj: Abu Sa’eed, tell me, in which manner should I have you killed?
Sa’eed bun Jubair: I swear by Allah Almighty that as you martyr me in this world, in like manner, I will have you killed in the Hereafter.
Hujjaj: Sa’eed bin Jubair, if you ask me for forgiveness only once, I will spare you from death.
Saeed bin Jubair: I swear by Allah Almighty that whatever I have said has been the truth. Therefore, I will never ever apologise to you. I only seek the Divine Pardon of Allah Almighty and no one else.
Hujjaj: O guards, take him outside and kill him without mercy.
(At that moment, the eminent Saint laughed as he was being led outside).
Hujjaj: At this moment, you are being led outside to be killed. What is the purpose of laughing at this moment?
Sa’eed bin Jubair: O Hujjaj! I am laughing at your so-called bravery and stupidity in front of the Divine Creator.
Hujjaj in a fit of anger then informs the guards that Sa’eed bin Jubair should be killed in front of him.
It is recorded that when they took Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Jubair – may Allah be pleased with him – outside, he faced that Qiblah and reads the 79th verse of Surah Al An’am, which is:
اِنِّیۡ وَجَّہۡتُ وَجْہِیَ لِلَّذِیۡ فَطَرَ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرْضَ حَنِیۡفًا وَّمَاۤ اَنَا مِنَ الْمُشْرِکِیۡنَ ﴿ۚ۷۹﴾
“I have directed my attention towards Him Who has created the heavens and the earth, am devoted solely to Him, and am not of the polytheists.”
Hujjaj then orders that he be turned away from the direction of Qiblah. When they turned him away, he recited the 115th verse of Surah Baqarah, which is:
وَ لِلہِ الْمَشْرِقُ وَالْمَغْرِبُ٭ فَاَیۡنَمَا تُوَلُّوۡا فَثَمَّ وَجْہُ اللہِؕ اِنَّ اللہَ وٰسِعٌ عَلِیۡمٌ﴿۱۱۵﴾
“And the East and the West, all belong to Allah – so whichever direction you face, there is Allah’s Entity.”
Hujjaj then ordered that his head be placed on the ground. When they placed his blessed head on the ground, the Great saint recited the 55th verse of Surah Taha, which is:
مِنْہَا خَلَقْنٰکُمْ وَ فِیۡہَا نُعِیۡدُکُمْ وَ مِنْہَا نُخْرِجُکُمْ تَارَۃً اُخْرٰی ﴿۵۵﴾
“From the earth We have created you, and to it We shall return you, and from it We shall raise you again”.
Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Jubair – may Allah be pleased with him – then recited the Kalimah loudly in front of everyone. He then makes a loud Du’a, “O Allah Almighty! Make it such that after me, Hujjaj will never ever kill another believer.”
As he completed this Du’a, they martyred him. This was the final time that the earth was blessed with looking at this eminent Saint and scholar.
It is also recorded that so much of blood emerged from this body that his killers were shocked. Hujjaj in a state of panic asked those around him that he had killed so many people but had never seen so much of blood appearing from the body of anyone. One of the so-called physicians who were present in the court replied, “O Hujjaj! The reason is that most people you had killed previously were people who died in fear. This is the reason that most of their blood stayed frozen in their bodies. However, this is someone who never displayed the smallest amount of fear even till his last breath. Therefore, the blood never froze in his body and that is why you are able to see so much of blood appearing.”
The miracle of his Du’a was that Hujjaj only lived for another fifteen days. However, there were fifteen days in which he lived in great pain and torment. It is mentioned that a strange boil appeared in his stomach. In fact, it is mentioned that even in those fifteen days, he did not even have a single night of peaceful sleep. As he tried to sleep, he used to suddenly awake in great panic and people around were shocked at this state. He mentioned to people that he could see Sa’eed bin Jubair pulling his leg and leading him somewhere in a dream. In this manner, one of the greatest oppressors in Islamic history spent the last few days in this world. He was screaming and trying to hold on to people but none of these things could help and assist him.
At the same time, when we look around the Muslim world, we will not even find a sign where the idiot was buried. But most Muslims are aware of where the blessed grave of Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Jubair – may Allah be pleased with him – is to be found. Everyone is aware that his blessed grave is situated in Iraq. Until the present day, when Muslims take his name, they mention that Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Jubair – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates from Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud – may Allah be pleased with him – who narrates from the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.
In other words, until the Day of Judgement, his blessed name is associated with the blessed Ashaab whose names are associated with the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. This is the greatest Du’a which a Muslim makes for the eminent Saint on a daily basis. (Akmaal, Tabqaat Imam She’rani, Tahzeeb)
