Hadrat Sayyiduna Ameer Hamza – may Allah be pleased with him – was a symbol of Islamic freedom and dignity. He is known as the Lion of Allah Almighty and His beloved Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. He was considered as one of the bravest people among the Quraish.

His full name is Abu Amaarah Ameer Hamza. He was born two years before the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. He accepted Islam three years into Islam. From that moment onwards, he never left the side of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. The story behind his acceptance is one of immense Islamic zeal and respect for the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.

It is mentioned that one day, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – was standing on the Mount of Safa when Abu Jahl walked past. Abu Jahl then started to insult Islam using some really foul words. However, all the time the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – remained silent. The freed female slave of Abdullah bin Jad’aan Tameemi heard the insults being thrown at the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.

After behaving in this despicable manner, Abu Jahl then went and joined the Quraish in their usual meeting near the Baitullah. Not long after this, Hadrat Sayyiduna Ameer Hamza – may Allah be pleased with him – returned from an hunting trip. His normal behaviour was that he first made Tawaaf of the Ka’ba, visited the Quraish and then returned to his residence. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – had already gone to his residence. As Abu Jahl passed by this female slave she informed him, “Abu Amaarah! Just now Abu Jahl had insulted your nephew in such a terrible manner that if you were present you would have certainly felt extremely insulted. Just now, he was standing at this place. There is no doubt that Abu Jahl had certainly personally insulted him, but, such was his patience and his noble behaviour that he never uttered a word.”

Since the great Muslim was destined to accept Islam, he flew into a great rage when he heard this. Ameer Hamza – may Allah be pleased with him – then rushed to see where Abu Jahl was without meeting anyone. When he entered the Haram Shareef, he found that Abu Jahl was sitting with other members of the Quraish. He then rushed towards Abu Jahl and without saying a word, he struck the head of Abu Jahl with his bow.

Such was the force of this blow that the head of Abu Jahl began to bleed. He shouted at him, “You have the cheek to insult the Prophet of Allah Almighty – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. Open your ears and listen carefully; I am also in his religion. I also say the same thing which says. If you are brave enough, then refute me openly in this regard.”

There were also a few people from the Bani Makhzum that tried to come to the aid of Abu Jahl, but Abu Jahl replied, “Leave Abu Amaarah alone. I do admit that I had greatly insulted his nephew.”

In this manner, the great companion became one of the strongest supporters of Islam. His acceptance of Islam also established the strength of Islam in front of the Quraish. At the same time, the persecution against the Muslims also began to decrease.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ameer Hamza – may Allah be pleased with him – took part in the Battle of Badr and opened a new chapter in bravery. He also had the habit of placing the feathers of an Ostridge on his clothing. It is mentioned that between him and Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – they had killed nearly a quarter of the Mushriks in this battle.

His flag was the first flag adopted in Islam which was tied personally by the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – also blessed him with the title of “Lion of Allah”. During the Battle of Uhud, he also killed many of the disbelievers and it is also mentioned that on this day, nearly six swords broke in his hand. By the amount of swords which broke clearly proves the ferocity of his attack against the disbelievers. He was martyred in this battle which took place on the 3rd year of Hijrah. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – also blessed him with the title of “Sayyidus Shuhadaah”. He was killed from behind by the slave of Jubair bin Mut’am, Wahshi, a slave from Abyssinia.

Wahshi, who later accepted Islam, explains, “I was from Abyssinia and considered an expert in throwing a lance. Very rarely did I ever miss my target. When the people began to move around in confusion, I went in search of Hadrat Sayyiduna Ameer Hamza – may Allah be pleased with him. He was dressed in white and black and he was cutting down the disbelievers as people cut down a carrot. No one was able to stand in front of him. I then stood behind a rock in hiding waiting for him. I then had him in my sight when Sabaa bin Abdul Uzza came in front. When Hadrat Sayyiduna Ameer Hamza – may Allah be pleased with him – saw him, he attacked and had him killed instantly. There was now no one in between us and that is when I threw the spear. The spear pierced him below his navel and he tried to come after me but collapsed. I then took my donkey and returned to Mecca and as per the agreement of my master, I was then freed.”

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – performed his Janaza Salaah nearly seventy times. In other words, the body of the other martyrs were placed in front and their Janaza Salaah performed, while all the time, the blessed body of Hadrat Sayyiduna Ameer Hamza – may Allah be pleased with him – remained in front. It is mentioned that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – wept so much when he saw the blessed body of his uncle that his entire beard became soaked with tears.

He used to also make Du’a many times for his blessed uncle and mentioned him on many occasions. When the Allah Almighty wills, then a person can turn to guidance in an instant. Therefore, a person should never lose hope in the Divine Help of Allah Almighty.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Jubair bin Mut’am – may Allah be pleased with him. He was also considered as among the leaders of the Quraish and was well versed in the science of family genealogy. He visited the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – once and within this single meeting, he had become impressed with Islam. He accepted Islam before the conquest of Mecca Shareef. He passed away in 57,58 or 59 A.H. during the rule of Hadrat Sayyiduna Ameer Mu’awiyah – may Allah be pleased with him.

Hadrat Wahsi bin Harb – may Allah be pleased with him. He presented himself as one of the people in the delegation from Ta’if. He accepted Islam but was also informed by the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – never to appear in front of him. He was also responsible for killing Musaylimah the liar and remained in Hums. He passed away during the reign of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani – may Allah be pleased with him.

Unfortunately, the Wahabi has made sure that in keeping with the behaviour of their elders such as Abu Jahl, they also made sure that the blessed Mazaar of Hadrat Sayyiduna Ameer Hamza – may Allah be pleased with him – be completely destroyed.
