One of the special qualities which Allah Almighty had bestowed upon Nabi Sulayman – peace be upon him – is that during his time, not only the humans, but also the Jinn and the ordinary animals used to obey his command and instructions. All of these creations were completely under his command. All of this occurred because once he had made a special Du’a to Allah Almighty which is mentioned in Surah Saad (38), verse 35:

“He said, ‘O my Lord’ forgive me, and bestow uponme a Kingdom which may not suit to anyone else after me. Undoubtedly, You are the Supreme One who Bestows.”

Allah Almighty accepted this Du’a of his and Nabi Sulayman – peace be upon him – was given such kingship which was never given to anyone before or anyone after.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – one day explained, “The previous night a mischievous Jinn wanted to create confusion in my Salaah and Allah Almighty, in His Infinite Mercy, gave me the power to capture this mischievous Jinn and I did capture it. After this, I wanted to tie it on one of the pillars of the Masjid so that all of you could see it during the day. However, at that moment, I remembered the Du’a of my brother Nabi Sulayman – peace be upon him – which was ‘bestow upon me a kingdom which may not suit anyone else after me.’ When I remembered this, I let it go.” (Sahih Bukhari Shareef, Fathul Bari, 6/356)

The words of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – tells us that even though Allah Almighty had combined in him all the excellences and miracles of the previous Prophets in him, but in respect of the Du’a made by Nabi Sulayman – peace be upon him, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – did not allow himself to capture this Jinn.

The majestic rule of Nabi Sulayman – peace be upon him.

The following verses of the Qur’an clearly explains to us about the amazing powers of governance which were given to Nabi Sulayman – peace be upon him – by the Allah Almighty.

In Surah Al Ambiyah (21), verse 82:

“And of the devils those who dived for him and did other work beside that and We had a check over them.”

In Surah Saba (34), verse 12:

“And to Sulayman We subjected the wind, its morning stage was of a month journey and its evening stage was of a month journey and We made to flow a stream of molten brass for him. And of the Jinns those who worked before him by the command of his Lord. And those of them who swerved from Our Commands We shall make them taste the torment of the blazing fire.”

In Surah Naml (27), verse 17:

“And there were gathered for Sulaiman his armies amongst jinns and men and birds, then they were held back.”

In Surah Saad (37), verse 37,38,39:

And whom Allah guides, for him there is none to mislead. Is not Allah the Honourable, the Master of Retribution?

And if you ask them who created the heavens and the earth, they will then necessarily say, ‘Allah’. Say you, ‘tell me then that those whom you worship besides Allah, if Allah desired any affliction for me shall they then remove His affliction? Or if He desires mercy for me, could they withhold His mercy? Say you, ‘Allah is enough for me’, in Him the trusting one put their trust’.

Say you, `O my people’, continue acting in your own way, I do my work, soon you will come to know.

A doubt removed

There are some people who have become ill with the sickness of refutation. They refute miracles by the Prophets and the Awliyah and they also refute the very existence of the Jinn. Pertaining to these verses which we have mentioned, they create all types of fancy explanations. The say that the Jinn is actually a type of human who used to possess immense strength and power and never came under the control of anyone except Nabi Sulayman – peace be upon him.

As for having control over the animals, they refute this by saying that the only animal which seemed to have obeyed him was the Hud Hud and nothing else. They also claim that Hud Hud is not the name of any animal but actually the name of a person who is in charge of the ocean. There are many such ridiculous statements which are made by this ignoramuses and they deliberately refute the Qur’an. In spite of them having no knowledge about the true existence of these creation, they continue to remain steadfast upon their ignorance.

Please bear in mind that even in the Qur’an the Jinn are considered as separate creation from humans. There are many examples of this which has been presented. We present only one verse from the Qur’an in this regard.

In Surah Zaariyat (51), verse 56 the Qur’an declares:

“And I have created the Jinn and the men only for this that they may worship Me.”

We can clearly see from this verse that Allah Almighty has clearly mentioned both of these as different creations and both have been created for one purpose which is to worship Allah Almighty. Therefore, bearing this verse in mind and to still insist that the Jinn is also a human which has super human strength is nothing but ignorance. Even the Hud Hud in the Qur’an has been described as a bird and describes the fact that Nabi Sulayman – peace be upon him – took a count of the birds. The word birds are clearly mentioned, and yet these people refute something which is clearly apparent. What can we say?

His throne used to also float in the air.

One of the special qualities of Nabi Sulayman – peace be upon him – is that the Allah Almighty had given him to the power to control the wind. In other words, the wind obeyed his command and did as it was told. Through the power of the wind, Nabi Sulayman – peace be upon him – used to cover a month’s journey in a few hours. From the story of Nabi Sulayman – peace be upon him, there are few things which have become apparent to us. The first obviously is that the wind was under his control. The second is that even the wind is considered as a powerful force of nature, yet, in the hands of Nabi Sulayman – peace be upon him – it became a mere tool. The third is that he was able to travel long distances in a few hours and minutes.

We should not listen to the Jews in this regard

There are also many reports and fake stories which have been compiled in reference to Nabi Sulayman – peace be upon him – by the Jews. Some of our own Muslim lecturers also quote some of this in their speeches. We should certainly refrain from this habit. We should rely on what the Qur’an and Ahadith has informed us in this regard and stick to those reports and descriptions.

In Surah Al Ambiyah (21), verse 81:

“And to Sulayman, We made subservient the violent wind that it blew at his bidding to the land in which We had placed Our blessings; and We are in the know of everything.”

In Surah Saad 38, verse 36:

“Then We subjected the wind to him that it ran by his commandment softly, wherever he desired.”

All of these prove the amazing power of Nabi Sulayman – peace be upon him – as found in the Qur’an. It is tragic that Muslims would turn to non-Muslims to learn about such great Prophets when it is the non-Muslim who actually reject these great Prophets. Hence, if you follow this path of only reading their corrupt manuscripts, true knowledge will never come to you.
