Download PDF: [S] Killing Females in Battle (Islamic story)
The narrator of this incident is Sayyiduna Hanzalah bin Rabee Tameemi Radi Allah ‘Anhu who was also among those blessed people who were in charge of recording the Qur’an. He is also known as Hanzalah Usaidi because among his forefathers was Asadi bin Amar bin Tameen. He was also sent to Taif by the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam. Later in life he went to Iraq where he passed away. (Usdul Ghabah, 2/84,85)
Sayyiduna Hanzalah bin Rabee Tameemi Radi Allah ‘Anhu narrates: “We were once in the company of the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam in a certain battle. We went past a female who had been killed. People were also gathered around the body. When the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam saw this, he said, ‘Those who were fighting (against us), the females, were not fighting.’ In other words, the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam was making clear the rules of battle and he also presented his command and law in this regard. The Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam then looked at the soldiers and said, “When this female was with those who were fighting against you and she was not fighting against you, why was she killed?” He then sent a strong message to Hadrat Sayyiduna Khalid bin Waleed Radi Allah ‘Anhu that the children and workers should not be killed (in battle).
In the report of Imam Abu Daud Radi Allah ‘Anhu, Hadrat Sayyiduna Ikramah Radi Allah ‘Anhu narrates that during the Battle of Taif, the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam walked past a female who had been killed. He then asked, “Who killed this female?” A person among the Muslims replied, “O Prophet of Allah! I had killed this female. As a matter of fact, I had captured her as part of the spoils of war and had made her sit behind me. However, when she saw that they had been defeated, she tried to grab my sword so that she could kill me. I realized her plan and after overpowering her, I had her killed.” When the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam heard this, he did not say anything but commanded that she be covered with sand. (Abu Daud, pg. 36,37)
We also come to realize that if a female is part of the group and she also intends to kill and maim, then in that case, she will be killed.
