Thalabi reports from Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas – May Allah be pleased with them – who explains the reason for the Revelation of the verse in Surah Nisaa, (verse 60):

“Did you not see those whose claim is that they believe in what has been sent down on you and what was sent down before you, and they then wish to make the devil their judge, whereas they were ordered to completely reject him? And the devil wishes to mislead them far astray.”

That there was once a Jew and a Munafiq named Bashar and there was a dispute among them. The Jew mentioned that they should take this dispute to the Holy Prophet – May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. However, the Munafiq (Bashar) replied that instead of doing this, they should take their dispute to Ka’ab bin Ashraf (in case the Jew did not agree with the decision of the Holy Prophet – May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him).

However, finally they took their dispute to the Holy Prophet – May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. After listening to the dispute, the Holy Prophet – May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – gave the decision in favour of the Jew.

Obviously, Bashar was not happy with this and mentioned that they should take this dispute to Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – May Allah be pleased with him. When this was presented in front of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – May Allah be pleased with him, the Jew also mentioned that the decision was already made in his favour by the Holy Prophet – May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – initially. Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – May Allah be pleased with him – then asked the Munafiq whether this was true what the Jew had mentioned. He replied that yes, the Jew was correct in what he was saying.

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – May Allah be pleased with him – then told both of them to wait for him. A few minutes later, he walked into the room with a sword. As he entered the room, without saying a word, he beheaded the Munafiq. He mentioned that whoever is not happy with the decision of Allah Almighty and His Prophet – May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, this decision was the correct decision for them.
