Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah Radi Allahu ‘Anhu narrates that the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam has declared that:

“A person who makes Taubah before the sun rises from the West, Allah azza wajal would accept the Taubah of that person.” (Muslim Shareef)

The signs of Qiyamah!

Before the Day of Judgement, certain signs would appear and among the signs is the rising of the sun from the West. When this sign appears, the doors of Taubah will be closed.  Whosoever is a disbeliever would remain a disbeliever and whosoever is a Believer would remain a believer.

Allah azza wajal declares in Surah An’am, verse 158, that:

یَوْمَ یَاْتِیْ بَعْضُ اٰیٰتِ رَبِّکَ لَا یَنْفَعُ نَفْسًا اِیْمَانُہَا لَمْ  تَکُنْ اٰمَنَتْ مِنْ قَبْلُ

“The day when that one sign of your Lord will come. Believing will not profit any soul”.

Allama Nawawi Alaihir Rahmah explains that, “This is the end of Taubah. In the Hadith Shareef it is mentioned that the door of Taubah is always open and as long as the door of Taubah are not closed, ones Taubah will also be accepted. However, when the sun rises from the West, then this door will be closed. Those who have not made Taubah before this, their Taubah will not be accepted. Another condition for making Taubah is that it must be made before the signs of death appear and before the last breath. The reason is that Taubah is not accepted at the moment of death and neither is Waseeyat applicable at this moment.” (Sharah Muslim)

Whose Taubah is not accepted?

Another opinion is that those people who see the sun rising from West, their Taubah would not be accepted. However, as for those people who are born after this, their Taubah from Kufr and Taubah for their sins will also be accepted because they did not see the signs of Qiyamah. (Mirqaatul Manaajih)

In the same book, the opinion of Hadrat Allamah Na’eemudeen Muradabadi Alaihir Rahmah is also mentioned that after this (sign) no humans would be born. In brief, the Qur’anic Ayah and the Hadith Shareef signifies those people who committed sins and did not make Taubah. And when they see this sign, they will try and make Taubah, their Taubah will not be accepted. The reason is, how is it possible to make Taubah when the Unseen has become apparent? (Mir’aatul Manaajih)

What is the Divine Wisdom for the sun rising in the West?

Allamah Qurtabi Alaihir Rahmah explains that when Sayyiduna Ebrahim Alayhis Salaam mentioned to Namrud the following, which is found in Surah Baqarah verse 258:

فَاِنَّ اللہَ یَاْتِیْ بِالشَّمْسِ مِنَ الْمَشْرِقِ فَاْتِ بِہَا مِنَ الْمَغْرِبِ فَبُہِتَ الَّذِیْ کَفَرَ

Ibrahim said, ‘Well, Allah brings the sun from the East: you bring it from the West.

As a reply to him be confounded, the only thing Nimrud could say was that it is impossible to make the sun rise from the West. However, one day, Allah azza wajal would reveal His Divine Power and will show these disbelievers how the sun rises from the West. Allah azza wajal has the Divine Power over all things. (At Tazkirah bi Ah waalil mautah)

The Taubah of a young person causes Jannah to be beautified!

It is reported that when a young person makes Taubah in the Divine Court of Allah azza wajal, the Angels congratulate each other. When the other Angels ask about this, they reply, “A young person has awakened from his sleep of negligence and has sought Taubah in the Divine Court of Allah azza wajal”. Then someone calls out, “As a (form) of welcome for the Taubah of this young person, beautify Jannah.” (Ar Roudul Faa’iq)

It is said that when a young man weeps because of his sins and accepts his mistakes in the Divine Court of Allah azza wajal, Allah azza wajal replies, “I have concealed this (mistake).”

As many times as this young man makes mistakes and makes Taubah, his Taubah is accepted by Allah azza wajal.

Fear for Allah azza wajal should be like this!

Once a Habshi person entered the court of the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam and declared, “O Prophet of Allah! I have become guilty of a shameful sin, will my Taubah be accepted?”

The Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam replied, “Yes it will be accepted.” The person then left. He then returned and asked “Does Allah azza wajal see me performing sin”? The Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam replied, “Yes”. He then gave a loud scream and passed away instantly.” (Ihya ul Uloom).

The doors of Taubah are not closed!

A person once asked Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Masud Radi Allahu ‘Anhu, “Hadrat, I have committed a sin, will my Taubah be accepted?” The eminent Sahaba turned away his face and a few moments later, he again looked at the person. He noticed that the person was weeping. Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Masud Radi Allahu ‘Anhu then declared, “There are eight doors in Jannah. Besides the door of Taubah, all other doors open and close. At this door of Taubah, there is a special Angel who does not close this door, therefore you should continue and do not become disheartened.” (Ihya ul Uloom)

A snake used to serve him

It is reported that at the beginning, the great scholar, Imam Abdullah ibn Mubarak Radi Allahu ‘Anhu, was an ordinary person who became infatuated by a young female. One evening, he took a friend and stood outside the house of this female. She also appeared on the roof above. They continued to look at each other until the morning. When the Adhan of Fajr was heard, Imam Abdullah ibn Mubarak Radi Allahu ‘Anhu thought that it was the Adhan of ‘Isha. However, when the morning light appeared, he realised that he had spent the entire night in this condition.

This created a revolution in his heart and became the reason for his Taubah. Imam Abdullah ibn Mubarak Radi Allahu ‘Anhu then admonished himself by saying, “O ibn Mubarak! You should be ashamed of yourself. Merely to satisfy your Nafs, your spent the entire on one leg and yet you believe that you should be respected as an esteemed person. When an Imam recites a long Surah in Salaah, you become uneasy and uncomfortable and yet you claim to be a believer.”

Imam Abdullah ibn Mubarak Radi Allahu ‘Anhu then made sincere Taubah and busied himself in seeking knowledge. It is said that he became such a dedicated and Kaamil Saint that one day he was sleeping in his mother’s orchard when she noticed that a snake was holding the branch of a sweet scented flower and was brushing away the flies and other insects from his blessed face.” (Kashful Mahjub)

What have we learnt?

  1. The Divine Mercy of Allah azza wajal is always ready to forgive a person, however, we should be constantly ready to make Taubah.
  2. When the sun rises from the West, the doors of Taubah will be finally closed.
  3. So-called physical parts which are attributed to Allah azza wajal should be left to its inner meaning and not compared to human parts. No one knows the meaning of these words, hence we should refrain from trying to analyse them.
  4. The more remorse, the quicker the Taubah is accepted.
  5. If a person consistently inspects his actions, very quickly, he will get the opportunity to make Taubah.
