It is mentioned that once two bags of ripe dates were given to Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar bin Abdul Aziz – may Allah be pleased with him. He asked where this came from. He was told that they were sent by the Governor of Jordan. When he asked how they had arrived, he was told that they were placed on camels which were used to deliver post. When Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar bin Abdul Aziz – may Allah be pleased with him – heard this, he said that he was no special person and that both of these parcels be sold and the money should be used to purchase grain for the camels which had brought these dates.

However, one of his nephews were present. He asked the messenger that he must inform him how much he had sold these dates for. When the person sold the dates, it came to fourteen Dirhams. The nephew then purchased these dates himself and then only did the great Muslim consume the dates making it clear that now it has become Halaal for him.
