Download PDF: Fearlessness of a Sahabiyah

Sayyidah Safiyah binte Abdul Mutallib Radi Allahu ‘Anha is the paternal aunt of the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam and also the mother of the blessed companion who was given news of Jannah in this world, Hadrat Sayyiduna Zubair bin Al Awwam Radi Allahu ‘Anhu.

It is mentioned that she was a very courageous and brave female. During the Battle of the Trench, the Muslims were standing and waiting for the impending attack by the disbelievers. The females were all gathered in one safe place, including the children as well. This was also an old and ancient fort.

Suddenly, a Jew climbed over this wall and tried to attack the females. However, the blessed aunt of the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam went forward herself and confronted this enemy of Islam. Sayyidah Safiyah Radi Allahu ‘Anha then grabbed a pole of a tent and hit the person so hard that she spit his skull. He fell to the ground with his sword in his hand and died instantly. She then severed his head and threw it on one side. All those Jews who were standing outside this area ran away when they saw what had happened to their comrade. (Tabqaat Ibn Sa’ad, 8/27)

The Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam has rightly said that whoever fears Allah azza wajal, all of the creation fears that person. Whoever does not fear Allah azza wajal, fear for all of creation will be instilled in his heart. (Kanzul Ummaal)

Since the pious servants of Allah azza wajal, meaning the Ashaab and the Awliyah, also have fear in their heart for Allah azza wajal, no worldly danger creates any fear in their heart.

At the same time, since we have no fear for Allah azza wajal in our hearts, we fear everything that passes us such snakes, scorpions, etc.

One of the signs that we do not fear Allah azza wajal is that we do not fulfil our Fard and Waajib and neither do we strive to protect ourselves against sin and transgression. We do not think of death and we have forgotten the punishment of the grave. We do not think that we have to account for our deeds on the Day of Judgement. As a matter of fact, we only get peace when we are in bad company. If this continues, then the final result will certainly be very evil.

We have to create fear in our hearts for Allah azza wajal. If this can be instilled in our hearts at least once, then we will continue to remain fearless of anything thereafter. Even if this does not happen, at least we will be steadfast in our Ibadah and obedient to Allah azza wajal. Aameen.
