Zul Qa’dah is the first of the four months in which war and killing was banned. It is said that it is extracted from the root word “Qu’ud” which signifies sitting. In other words, the Arabs used to sit and refrain from war and battle. Hence the name Zul Qa’dah.

Famous events in this month

On the 1st of this month, the Almighty azza wa jall promised Nabi Moosa alaihis salaam the revelation of the Torah and about the 30-night period.

In Surah Al A’raaf, verse 142, the Quran declares:

And We made Musa a promise of thirty nights and completed adding ten more in them, so the promise of his Lord was completed by forty nights. And Musa said to his brother, Harun, ‘be my vicegerent among my people and do right and follow not the way of mischief makers’.  And when Musa came to Our appointed time and his Lord spoke to him.

Nabi Moosa alaihis salaam had also mentioned to the Bani Israel that when they would be saved from the forces of Pharaoh, he will bring them a Divine Book. In this book, there would be laws that would explain what is Halal and what is Haraam. When Pharaoh was destroyed, Nabi Moosa alaihis salaam inquired about this book from the Almighty azza wa jall. He was then told to keep thirty fasts. However, when he had kept thirty fast, he felt that there was some smell coming from his mouth, hence, he decided to use Miswaak to clean his mouth. However, when the Angels saw this, they mentioned to him that there was a very sweet smell which was emanating from his mouth and that now they could not smell it any longer.

It was then that the Almighty azza wa jall commanded him to keep another ten fast in the month of Zul Qa’dah. He was also told, “O Moosa! Are you not aware that the smell coming from the mouth of someone who is fasting is sweeter than Musk?” When Nabi Moosa alaihis salaam appeared on the mountain to listen to the Torah, he was dressed in pure and clean clothes whilst still fasting. This was the mountain of Sinai. The Almighty azza wa jall covered this mountain with a large cloud. Every creation was then removed from that area and the heavens were opened to him. He could see the Angels who were standing in air and he was also able to see the Divine Throne. He could also see the Blessed Pen and the Divine Tablet.

The Almighty azza wa jall then spoke to him. At that moment, Jibraeel Ameen was also present, however, the conversation between the Almighty azza wa jall and Nabi Moosa alaihis salaam was not even heard by Jibraeel Ameen.

(Tafseer Khazin)

The Almighty azza wa jall then blessed Nabi Moosa alaihis salaam with Torah and then informed him as mentioned in verses 144 and 145 in the same Surah:

Said Allah, ‘O Moosa, I have chosen you from amongst the people by My Messages and by My word. Take then what I have given you and be of the grateful. And We wrote for him on the Tablets of everything an admonition, and details of everything, and said, ‘O Moosa, take it with firmness and bid your people to follow the best of it. Soon I shall show you the abode of the disobedient.

Establishment of the Holy Ka’bah

  • On the 5th day of this month, Nabi Ebrahim alaihis salaam and Nabi Ismail alaihis salaam established the foundation of the Holy Ka’bah.
  • On the 14th day of this month, Nabi Yunus alaihis salaam was removed from the stomach of the whale.

It is mentioned that Nabi Yunus alaihis salaam had warned his nation of impending Divine punishment. However, when this punishment was delayed, he quietly left the city. He then decided to travel on a boat. However, the boat stopped in the middle of the sea and there did not seem to be any reason for it to stop. However, the sailor informed everyone that it seems that there was someone on this boat who had run away from his master. They then took lots and the name of Nabi Yunus alaihis salaam appeared. He also admitted that he was the person. They then put him in the water. The reason was that in those days, it was also a belief among people that if they do not remove the guilty party from the boat, the boat would not be able to travel further. The Almighty azza wa jall then instructed a whale to swallow Nabi Yunus alaihis salaam. It is said that he stayed in the belly of this whale for one day, three days, seven days and some say forty days. However, when he started to plead for forgiveness and admitted that he had wronged himself, the Almighty azza wa jall instructed the whale to place him on one side of the shore.

Fast in Zul Qada

In the hadith shareef it is mentioned that whoever keeps a single fast in the month of Zul Qa’dah, the Almighty azza wa jall will give him the reward of one Hajj every moment and the reward of freeing a slave.

In another hadith shareef it is mentioned that one should display respect for this month because among the four sacred months, this is the first of them. In another hadith shareef it is mentioned that one moment of ibaadah in this month is better than a thousand months of ibaadah. It is also mentioned that one day of fast in this blessed month is equal to a thousand years of fast.

Nafil in this month

It is mentioned that whoever reads four rakah of Salah in the first night of this month, in which, after Surah Fatiha, he should read Surah Ikhlaas 33 times, the Almighty azza wa jall will establish for him a thousand houses in Jannah made from precious stones. There will also be a throne in each house made from precious stones. On each throne there will be a maiden from Jannah whose forehead will be bright like the sun.

In one narration, it is mentioned that whoever reads four rakah of nafil on every Juma, after the Surah Fatiha, he reads Surah Ikhlas 21 times, the Almighty azza wa jall will grace him with the reward of a Hajj and Umrah.

In another report, it is mentioned that whoever reads a hundred rakah on a Thursday in this month, after the Surah Fatiha, he reads Surah Ikhlas ten times, he will be blessed with immense reward.
