Rabee’ul Awwal Shareef is the third month of Islamic calendar. The reason for this is that it was called Rabee’ul Awwal is because when the name of this month was chosen, it was the beginning of spring which is a month of blessings and barakah. The greatest blessing and Barakah to the whole of the universe was that on the twelfth of this month, the Holy Prophet peace be upon him appeared on this earth and because of this; immense blessings were sent to the earth. On this month, on the 8th, the Holy Prophet peace be upon him arrived in Madina shareef and on the 10th of this month he was married to Hadrat Sayyidah Khadijah May Allah have mercy on her. There is also difference of opinion on this and some say that both of these incidents occurred on the 12th of Rabi ul Awwal.
(Ajaa’ibul Makhluqaat. 45)
The great Mashaa’ikh also say that the night when the Holy Prophet peace be upon him was born is even greater than the Night of Qadr. The reason for that is because on the night Qadr, the Angels descend to earth while on this night, the Holy Prophet peace be upon him blessed the earth with his birth and it is through the Holy Prophet peace be upon him, that all the creation came into being. On the night of Qadr, the Almighty azza wa jall sends His Divine Blessing to the entire Ummah, while with the arrival of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him, he was sent as a mercy for the whole of mankind and everything else in the universe. The Holy Quran declares that:
وَمَاۤ اَرْسَلْنٰکَ اِلَّا رَحْمَۃً لِّلْعٰلَمِیۡنَ ﴿۱۰۷﴾
And We sent not you, but a mercy for all worlds.
(Al-Ambiya 21, Verse 107)
Muslims are also encouraged to display immense happiness and joy on the day of the 12th of Rabi ul Awwal. One should feed the orphans and carry out Meelad marches. One should also increase in reading Durood shareef and Salaam. We should also ask the Almighty azza wa jall to reveal blessing and barakah in this year through this blessed month and fulfil all the permissible things which a person asks for.
(Ma Thabata Minas sunnah). 59)
Muslims are also encouraged to hold as much Meelad celebrations as possible in this month especially on the 12th of Rabil ul Awwal.
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdul Wahid bin Ismail May Allah have mercy on him narrates that there was once a person in Egypt who used to hold a Meelad every year. His neighbor was a Jew. Once, his wife asked him, “What is the reason that our neighbor spends so much of money in the month of Rabi ul Awwal?” Her husband replied, “The reason is that on this month, their Prophet was born. Therefore, in this happiness and joy, he celebrates this occasion.” The wife replied that this was a very good habit. After saying this, she also went to sleep. In her dream, she saw a most handsome person whose face was full or Nur and Awe. This person also entered the house of her neighbor. Around him, there were also his companions who displayed immense respect and decorum for this personality. The lady then asked someone as to who this person was, they replied that this was the beloved Prophet of Allah May Allah have mercy on him. He was entering this house so that he could greet these people and meet them and grace them with his appearance. Another reason is because these people also celebrate his birth and display joy on this blessed occasion.
The lady then asked that if she wanted to speak to him, will she be allowed to speak to him? They said that yes she would be allowed to speak to him. She then approached the Holy Prophet peace be upon him and said, “O Mohammed”. He replied, “Labbaik (I am present)”. The female then asked, “You have blessed me with an answer, even though I do not belong to your religion. As a matter of fact, I am a Jew and therefore your enemy.” The Holy Prophet peace be upon him replied, “I swear by that Divine Being who has sent me as the true Prophet, I did not reply to your question until I came to realize that the Almighty azza wa jall wanted you to receive guidance.”
The lady continued, “Without doubt, you are the true Prophet and the being with the best of manners. A person who does not respect you and refutes you, he will certainly be disgraced.” She then sincerely recited the Kalimah. She also made the intention that in the morning, she will sell whatever she had and (with this) money, she will arrange a Meelad and also distribute the balance in sadqah and charity because the Almighty azza wa jall had blessed her with Imaan.
However, in the morning, she was even more surprised because before she could do anything, she saw that her husband was very busy preparing food and other items. When she asked him about this, he replied, “The reason that I am preparing for this celebration is because during the night I was informed that you had accepted Islam!”. His wife asked how he had come to know of this, he replied, “The reason is because after you, I had also accepted Islam at the blessed hands of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him.”
(Al Meeladun Nabawi, Ibn Jouzi. 60. Tazkiratul Waa’izeen. 200)
Abu Lahb who was also the uncle of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him, is said to have freed his female slave named Thaubiyah after she brought him the news of the birth of his nephew. When he died, someone saw him in a dream and asked him about his condition. He replied, “I am in the fire of hell because of my kufr, however, on every Monday, there is a decrease in my punishment. The same finger which I had indicated to free my female slave and had given her freedom, from between these two fingers, I am able to drink water.
Ibn Jouzi May Allah have mercy on him explains that Surah Lahab was revealed to curse this person and when this is the reward been given to someone who never accepted the Holy Prophet peace be upon him and never celebrated the Meelad in his life, imagine the reward which is in store for that Muslim who celebrates the Meelad. Bear in mind that Abu Lahb did not actually celebrate the birth of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him as the coming of a Prophet but it was for the birth of his nephew. Imagine the benefit of that person who celebrates the birth of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him sincerely believing in him?
(Ma Thabata min Sunnah. 60)
There are numerous proofs for the celebrating of the Meelad from the Quran, the Ahadith and the statements of the Awliyah. There are untold rewards in store for someone who performs the Meelad and those who claim that it is Bidah, are merely robbing themselves of immense barakah.
The reality of Meelad shareef
The first point which we should bear in mind is understanding what Meelad is. The three words used to describe this blessed event are, Meelad, Moulood and Mowlid. All of these three words have the same meaning “birth”. The reality of Meelad is that people congregate to celebrate and a person stands up to deliver a few words in the praise of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him. After this, Salaam is recited by everyone standing with respect. If the person has the means, then sweets and food are also distributed and also a special Du’a is made. All of these things which we have explained are proven from the Quran, the Sunnah and the statements of the eminent Ulama.
Remembering the Holy Prophet peace be upon him is also a Sunnah of the Almighty azza wa jall!
In Surah Taubah (9), verse 128, the Almighty azza wa jall declares:
لَقَدْ جَآءَکُمْ رَسُوۡلٌ مِّنْ اَنۡفُسِکُمْ عَزِیۡزٌ عَلَیۡہِ مَاعَنِتُّمْ حَرِیۡصٌ عَلَیۡکُمۡ بِالْمُؤْمِنِیۡنَ رَءُوۡفٌ رَّحِیۡمٌ ﴿۱۲۸﴾
Assuredly there has come to you a messenger from among yourselves, heavy upon him is your suffering; ardently desirous of your welfare, and to Muslims is most Kind and Merciful.
In this verse, when the Almighty azza wa jall is telling that “there has come to you a Prophet” He is declaring the arrival of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him. He then declares, “from among yourselves”. In this way, He is explaining the community and the dignified family of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him.
Further, He explains, “heavy upon him is your suffering; ardently desirous of your welfare, and to Muslims, he is most Kind and Merciful”. In this part of the verse, He is describing the blessed qualities of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him. These are the three aspects which are explained and presented in the Meelad shareef. Hence, to celebrate the Meelad is a Sunnah of the Almighty azza wa jall.
In the Quran, the Almighty azza wa jall declares that He has done a great favour to the Muslims by sending the Holy Prophet peace be upon him:
لَقَدْ مَنَّ اللہُ عَلَی الْمُؤۡمِنِیۡنَ اِذْ بَعَثَ فِیۡہِمْ رَسُوۡلًا مِّنْ اَنۡفُسِہِمْ یَتْلُوۡا عَلَیۡہِمْ اٰیٰتِہٖ وَیُزَکِّیۡہِمْ وَیُعَلِّمُہُمُ الْکِتٰبَ وَالْحِکْمَۃَ ۚ وَ اِنۡ کَانُوۡا مِنۡ قَبْلُ لَفِیۡ ضَلٰلٍ مُّبِیۡنٍ ﴿۱۶۴﴾
Undoubtedly, Allah did a great favour to the Muslims that in them from among themselves sent a Messenger who recites unto them His signs and purifies them and teaches them the Book and wisdom, and necessarily before that they were certainly in apparent error.
(Aale Imran 3, Verse 164)
This also proves that the Almighty azza wa jall is reminding the Muslims of the blessed arrival of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him. Unfortunately, there are still ardent and desirous friends of satan who continue to object and reject the very principle of Meelad shareef. What more can we say about these people?
We will present a few proofs from the Ahadith shareef.
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas May Allah have mercy on him narrates that:
اَلَّذِیْنَ بَدَّلُوْا نِعْمَۃَ اللّٰہِ کُفْرًا قَالَ ھُمْ وَاللّٰہِ کُفَّارُ قُرَیْشٍ قَالَ عَمْرٌو ھُمْ قُرَیْشٍ وَّ مُحَمَّدٌ ﷺ نِعْمَۃُ اللّٰہِ
Those people who have translated the bounty of Allah azza wa jall into an act of kufr, the eminent companion says that these were the disbelievers among the Quraish. And Hadrat Amr May Allah have mercy on him also explains that the people who changed this were the disbelievers among the Quraish. Because there is no doubt that the greatest bounty of Allah azza wa jall is the Holy Prophet peace be upon him.
(Bukhari shareef. 2/566)
From this, we come to understand and realize that the greatest bounty of Allah azza wa jall is indeed the Holy Prophet peace be upon him. And there is no doubt that those who refute and reject this bounty are certainly unfortunate. Therefore, those people who claim to be Muslims and yet display no respect and reverence for the birth and appearance of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him, they will certainly be included among those who are deprived of his blessings. When we understand this, we should then look at our practices when it comes to celebrating his blessed birth.
The Almighty azza wa jall explains in the Quran that we should always remember the blessing of Allah and He continues to advise people to do this.
وَ اَمَّا بِنِعْمَۃِ رَبِّکَ فَحَدِّثْ ﴿٪۱۱﴾
And publicize well the favours of your Lord.
(Al-Dhuha 93, Verse 11)
وَ اذْکُرُوۡا نِعْمَۃَ اللہِ عَلَیۡکُمْ
And remember Allah’s favour upon you.
(Al-Ma’idah 5, Verse 7)
We ask you, which can be the greatest blessing besides the Holy Prophet peace be upon him? The Almighty azza wa jall had commanded us to remember these blessings which is the essence of Meelad shareef. Therefore, these is no sense to people who claim that it us a Bid’ah or Haraam. As a matter of fact, we have been commanded to celebrate the blessings of Allah azza wa jall and it is very surprising that people would not consider the Holy Prophet peace be upon him as the greatest blessing to the universe.
To perform the Meelad shareef is actually a Sunnah of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him – shimself!
As we have said, there are certain people who condemn the Meelad shareef and yet, they do not understand that the occasion Meelad shareef is something which was celebrated by the Holy Prophet – peace be upon him – himself! As we have said, this is the function where the blessed qualities of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him given to him by the Almighty azza wa jall is presented and discussed.
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abbas May Allah have mercy on him narrates that it came to the attention of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him that there were certain people who were insulting his blessed family lineage. He then stood on the mimbar and asked everyone who he was. The blessed Ashaab replied, “You are the Prophet of Allah peace be upon him.” He then went on to explain, “I am the son of Abdul Mutallib. Almighty Allah azza wa jall created the creation and I was created as the Best. He then divided creation in two categories and made me the best among them. He then created tribes and he made me in the best of tribes. He then made households and he made me among the best of households. Therefore, as for a being and as for a household I have the best.
(Mishkaat shareef. 513)
This Hadith shareef clearly proves that the Holy Prophet peace be upon him personally held his own Meelad shareef and presented his most supreme qualities to people. At the same time, in this Meelad shareef, the purpose was also to reject and refute those who spoke ill against him. Therefore, if the Sunni Ulama discuss the Holy Prophet peace be upon him and they reject those who object to the supreme qualities of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him, they are in fact following a Sunnah. As for those who consider this as bidah and haraam, perhaps in reality they are following their elders who were the first to object to the supreme qualities of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him!
An Objection Against Meelad Celebration
Those who object to the Meelad shareef also object to the fact that Sunnis are in a habit of specifying special days for these celebrations and this is nothing but confusing and changing Shariah. Therefore, Meelad shareef is not permissible. This objection also applies to acts like Giyaarwi shareef, seven days, ten days, forty days etc.
In answer to their objection, Sunnis do not consider specifying a special day as something which is Waajib or necessary. As a matter of fact, the Sunni Muslim consider it permissible to celebrate the Meelad shareef 24/7 and three hundred and sixty-five days a year. They consider it as one of the greatest occasion in their lives.
At the same time, these same objectors of Meelad shareef also have their own so called religious functions where they set a specific date and day. They also nominate special speakers for those functions. They print and distribute pamphlets all around the city. Close to the date of this function, they remind people through various media of this function. Yet, in spite of all of this, their functions are permissible and the Meelad shareef is not permissible, how is this possible? It is certainly very difficult to understand the thinking of these people. How is something permissible to one group of people and then the same thing becomes haraam for the other. These people also have their so called Seerat conferences. For them, this is permissible and when Sunnis have a Meelad shareef, this becomes haraam and bidah? The Quran clearly tells us that we should remember the “Days of Allah azza wa jall”. Everyone knows that every day and night and every moment belongs to Allah azza wa jall. Therefore, what is the meaning of “days of Allah azza wa jall”? Listen carefully about what are days of Allah azza wa jall. The days of Allah azza wa jall are those special days on which the Almighty azza wa jall in His Divine Mercy, blessed mankind with some of His Special Grace. In this verse, the Almighty azza wa jall is reminding Nabi Moosa alaihis salaam that he should remind his people of the special Grace of the Almighty azza wa jall when He sent to them the Mann and Salwa.
If this is the Divine Reminder of the Almighty azza wa jall on Nabi Moosa alaihis salaam about the days when Mann and Salwa came to then and they should remember these days, how much important it would be to remember that Greatest Blessing on the Universe which is the Holy Prophet peace be upon him especially when the Creator is also reminding us that this Divine Mercy in the form of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him who is a Mercy to the entire universe? If the people of Bani Israeel are told to remember the “days of Allah azza wa jall”:
وَذَکِّرْہُمْ بِاَیّٰىمِ اللہِ
and remind them of the days of Allah.
(Ibraheem 14, Verse 5)
Which are the days when Mann and Salwa was sent to them, it would be even more important and necessary upon mankind especially among the Muslims to remember every moment of the Holy Prophet’s – peace be upon him – life.
As we have said, a true Muslim should do this 24/7 and every day in the year. Remember that this is the Nur through which all nur appeared. This is the special creation of Allah azza wa jall through whose Nur all other creation was made. Hence, when we celebrate this special Gift of Allah azza wa jall in the form of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him, when we march in a juloos, when we organize events to celebrate this occasion, when we feed the poor and all of mankind showing our gratitude to Allah azza wa jall, how can we even think of considering this as haraam and bidah? From this, we have to conclude that a person who objects to a celebration of this nature, must truly be an ardent enemy of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him and therefore, he can never be a true servant of the Almighty azza wa jall.
The proof of setting aside a specific day or date from the hadith shareef.
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas May Allah have mercy on him narrates that:
اَنَّ رَسُوْلَ اللّٰہِ ﷺ قَدِمَ الْمَدِیْنَۃَ فَوَجَدَ الْیَھُوْدَ صِیَامًا یَوْمَ عَاشُوْرَاءَ فَقَالَ لَھُمْ رَسُوْلُ اللّٰہِ ﷺ مَا ھٰذَا الْیَوْمُ الَّذِیْ تَصُوْمُوْنَہٗ، فَقَالُوْا ھٰذَا یَوْمٌ اَنْجَی اللّٰہُ فِیْہِ مُوْسٰی وَقَوْمَہٗ وَغَرَّقَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَقَوْمَہٗ فَصَامَہٗ مُوْسٰی شُکْرًا فَنَحْنُ نَصُوْمُہٗ فَقَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللّٰہِ ﷺ فَنَحْنُ اَحَقُّ وَاَوْلٰی بِمُوْسٰی مِنْکُمْ فَصَامَہٗ رَسُوْلُ اللّٰہِ ﷺ وَاَمَرَ بِصِیَامِہٖ
“When the Holy Prophet peace be upon him was in Madina shareef, he noticed that the Jews were fasting on the day of Ashurah. The Holy Prophet peace be upon him asked them, “what day is this on which you are keeping fast?’ They replied, “This is a very big day on which the Almighty azza wa jall saved Nabi Moosa alaihis and his nation. And He also drowned Pharaoh and his nation. Thereafter, Nabi Moosa alaihis salaam as a mark of gratitude kept fast and we also fast on this day.”
To this, the Holy Prophet peace be upon him said, “We are more entitled and closer to Nabi Moosa alaihis Salaam than you.” He then kept fast on that day and also advised other Muslims to also keep fast.”
(Mishkaat shareef. 180).
This hadith shareef proves the act of gratitude shown by Nabi Moosa alaihis salaam was because he was saved from a tyrant and his people were also saved and this is such an act of his that it was performed every year on a set day. Therefore, when the Holy Prophet peace be upon him commanded Muslims to keep fast on this set day, was he not nominating a specific day of celebration? By this act and command of his, the Holy Prophet peace be upon him was also proving that the celebration of giving thanks to the Almighty azza wa jall was something which is to be marked with ibaadah and that to remember the special blessing of the Almighty azza wa jall is actually the Sunnah of the Prophets!
This was only one Prophet, namely Nabi Moosa alaihis salaam and when one keeps fast on this day, he will also remember Nabi Moosa alaihis salaam and the great blessing that he received on this day among the many other blessing which came to mankind as we have already mentioned previously. Therefore, in summary, if people are allowed to remember this day, how can anyone stop the occasion when the greatest of Prophets is been remembered and when his blessed birth is being celebrated? If these people object to Meelad shareef, they have no idea where it would ultimately lead them to. However, that is not surprising simply because we all know that when Imaan leaves a person, his simple faculty to think is also taken away.
Second hadith shareef
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah May Allah have mercy on him states that the Holy Prophet peace be upon him used to fast on Monday:
سُئِلَ رَسُوْلُ اللّٰہِ ﷺ عَنْ صَوْمِ یَوْمِ الْاِثْنَیْنِ فَقَالَ وُلِدْتُ وَفِیْہِ اُنْزِلَ عَلَیَّ
When he was questioned about this, he replied, “I was born on this day and on this day, the Quran was revealed to me.”
(Sahih Muslim shareef and Mishkaat shareef 179)
This hadith shareef clearly proves to us that it is not impermissible or haraam to nominate any specific day to any specific occasion. On this day, the Holy Prophet peace be upon him is clearly informing us that he was blessed with two Divine Mercy. One is his birth and the second is the Quran. This is why he used to fast on this day to celebrate these occasions. If people still do not think after this, then all we can say is that Hidaayah is only from Allah azza wa jall.
Statement from the eminent Ulama and Awliyah About Meelad
There are numerous statements and verdicts which have been issued by the eminent Awliyah and Ulama of the past but we will present just a few of them. We are hopeful that this might help also a little to remove these doubts from certain sceptics.
Imam Abu Shaamah May Allah have mercy on him who is the Ustad of Imam Nawawi May Allah have mercy on him states that, “In our time, the best of innovations is that which is practiced the day on which the Holy Prophet peace be upon him was born. In other words, charity, good deeds, beautification (of one’s surrounding), display of happiness, being good to the poor, which is also a sign that in one’s heart, there is a sense of love and reverence for the Holy Prophet peace be upon him. It is also a method of giving thanks to the Almighty azza wa jall for having sent the Holy Prophet peace be upon him as a mercy for the universe.”
(Seerat-e-Nabawi. 45. Seerat-e-Halbi. 100)
The opinion of Ibnul Jazari May Allah have mercy on him
He explains that, “When Abu Lahab is someone who is condemned in the Quran and yet in spite of this, he receives benefits for having displayed happiness at the birth of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him, (in other words, his punishment is lessoned on Monday), imagine the person who is a true follower of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him, what would be his benefit and reward? Especially that person who sincerely celebrates the birth of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him. (Imagine the benefit for this person) who spends on this occasion according to his means? By Allah azza wa jall it is my opinion that the Almighty azza wa jall will certainly grant him immense blessings in the form of allowing him to enter the place of eternal happiness.”
(Anwaar-e-Mohammadiyah min Al Mawaahib shareef. 28).
The opinion of Imam Sakhaawi May Allah have mercy on him
During the three generations at the beginning of Islam, the method of Meelad was not as it is today, it was started after that. However, Muslims have continued to arrange and organize these Meelad celebrations in cities and towns. They also distribute charity in these towns and cities. They are also in the habit of discussing various aspects of the Meelad. As a matter of fact, it is through the Meelad that these people are blessed and all types of Divine Grace that descends upon them.”

The opinion of Allamah Yusuf bin Ismail Nabhaani May Allah have mercy on him
“The Muslims celebrate Melaad in the month of the Meelad shareef. They invite people and during the nights, they distribute all types of charity. They display happiness and do good deeds. They genuinely organize these Meelad programs.”
The opinion of Imam ibn Jouzi May Allah have mercy on him
One of the benefits of Meelad is that there will be safety and protection for entire year. This is also a means of receiving glad tidings. The first king who invented this was Muzaffar Abu Saeed who was the King or Irbil. For this person Hafiz ibn Daheeyah had also written a treatise entitled, “At Tanweer fi Mouloudil Basheer”. The king handed him the gift of a thousand dinaars (gold coins). This king also celebrated the Meelad shareef and he used to perform Meelad in the month of Rabi ul Awwal shareef. He used to celebrate this occasion in a grand style. He was also a very brave and intelligent leader. Someone who was also very learned and just. He ruled for a very long period. He passed away in the year 630 A.H. while he was with his army when they had surrounded the English in a city called Akaasah. He possessed a very noble personality.”
The opinion of the grandson of Ibn Jouzi May Allah have mercy on him
The grandson of Ibn Jouzi May Allah have mercy on him states that, “those people had informed me who used to live with the Sultan of Irbil and who were also present in these functions that this ruler used to slaughter five thousand goats and one thousand chicken. Nearly a hundred thousand plates of butter and thirty thousand platters of sweet. In this function, eminent Awliyah and Ulama used to be present and all of them were given a special gift. There were also many fragrances which used to spread around the area and in one function, nearly three hundred thousand dinaars were spent.”

The opinion of Hadrat Syed Ahmed Zaini Daylaan Makki Shafe’i May Allah have mercy on him.
He has stated that, “To organize a Meelad shareef and to gather people on this occasion is a very noble act.”
The opinion of Khaatamul Fuqaha wal Muhaditheen, Shaikh Ahmed Shahaabudeen bin Hajr Haythami Makki May Allah have mercy on him
He states that, “Moulood and the various formats of recitations which are carried out in Meelad gatherings, all of them are indeed very noble. This include practices of charity, Durood and Salaam upon the Holy Prophet peace be upon him and also reciting the praises of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him.”
(Fataawah Hadeethiyyah. 129).
The opinion of Afdalul Fudalaa, ‘Alamul Ulama, Fareedul Asar, Hadrat Moulana Shah Abdul Haq Muhaddith Dehlwi May Allah have mercy on him
He states that, “For those who celebrate the Meelad shareef, spend in its path and also display happiness on this occasion, their proof is that even though Abu Lahab was someone who is condemned in the Quran, yet, when he heard the news of the birth of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him, he freed his female slave and would receive benefit of this act on every Monday; therefore, what would be the condition of that Muslim who spends happily and willingly on this, the Meelad shareef?”

The opinion of Hadrat Shah Waliullah Muhaddith Dehlwi May Allah have mercy on him
He has declared in “Fuyuzul Haramain” that, “I presented myself in that house in Makkah shareef in which on the 12th of Rabi ul Awwal, the Meelad shareef was being celebrated. (In this function), the blessed birth was being discussed, those amazing miracles at the time of his blessed birth. Suddenly, I saw an immense Nur appear in this function and I thought about this Nur and realized that this Nur belonged to the Angels who present themselves in these blessed functions. There were also other forms of Nur and this was certainly the Divine Blessing of the Almighty azza wa jall which was being revealed in the form of Nur.”

The opinion of Molwi Mohammed Inaayat Ahmed
He gives the opinion that, “In Haramain shareefain and in most Muslim countries, Meelad celebrations take place in the blessed month of Rabi ul Awwal shareef. Muslims gather and discuss the Mowlid and recite Durood in excess. As a means (of respect for their guest), they also distribute food and sweet. There is certainly no doubt that this action is an action which is a cause of immense barakah. It is also a means of greater love for the Holy Prophet peace be upon him. On the 12th of Rabi ul Awwal, this takes place in the blessed Masjidun Nabawi shareef and in Makkah shareef, this takes place in the house where the Holy Prophet peace be upon him was born.

The opinion of Moulana Haji Hafiz abul Hasanaat Mohammed Abdul Hay Lucknowi
He states that, “Meelad shareef is not bidah and misguidance for two reasons. The first is that the purpose of Meelad is that a lecturer presents a certain Quranic verse or a hadith shareef and then explains in the light of these, the excellence, the miracles, the state at the time of the blessed birth and the various other amazing incidents which appeared. This is the same as was presented by Ibn Hajr Maliki in his treatise, “An Nimatul Kubrah alal Aalamin bi Mouludi Sayyid Wuldi Adam”. In like manner, other eminent Ulama have also done. There is no doubt that this Moulood shareef also existed in the time of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him and the blessed Ashaab even though, this specific name was not used.
This fact is not hidden from the masters in the science of hadith in their lectures and speeches and in their teachings used to discuss this blessed issue about the blessed birth of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him. In various authentic books of Ahadith, it is also mentioned that the Holy Prophet peace be upon him used to allow Hadrat Sayyiduna Hassaan bin Thabit May Allah have mercy on him to sit on the mimbar shareef and he used to read the praises of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him in the form of a poem. The Holy Prophet peace be upon him used to also make special dua for him and used to make dua that the Almighty azza wa jall assist, (Hadrat Hassaan May Allah have mercy on him) with the Ruhul Qudus.”
The people who are familiar with the “Diwaan” of Hadrat Sayyiduna Hassaan bin Thaabit May Allah have mercy on him are fully aware that in these qasaa’id, there are descriptions of the miracles of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him, the state of his blessed birth and his blessed family lineage. Therefore, to read any of these descriptions (or speak about them) in any gathering is also a Meelad shareef!”.
Some people also give the opinion that it is not permissible to gather people and have the Meelad. Moulana Abdul Hay Lucknowi refutes these people by saying, “If there is a doubt created in the mind that lecturing about his blessed birth and his excellence is not proven in the hadith and therefore to gather people and call people to one’s house for the purpose of Meelad shareef is not permissible. These people should be refuted in this manner that to gather people to spread knowledge and also the message of the hadith shareef is something which is clearly proven.

The second reason is that even if it is proven that Meelad was not celebrated in the first three generations, however, the principle of this is something which is proven in Islam. It is considered as highly recommended for people to spread knowledge and having a Meelad is also a form of spreading knowledge. Therefore, one has to conclude that celebrating Meelad is a recommended action.

Let us look at some of the names of people who have encouraged and lauded the act of Meelad shareef. This same Moulana says, “In this belief, one of them is that eminent Mufti, Hafiz ibn Hajr and Shami. These are the giants of Islam who have considered it permissible to hold a Meelad shareef.”
(Majmu’a Fatawa 12)
As for those who refute this blessed occasion, this same Moulana states that, “There is no doubt that Meelad shareef in essence is something which is recommended and encouraged. This is irrespective of whether or not it was practiced in the first three blessed generations. Another important fact to bear in mind that no one had openly condemned this act of Meelad shareef except a very small minority whose leader was Taajudeen Faakihaani.”
This person also had no knowledge and he was not able to even debate with those Ulama who had given the fatwa of permissibility for Meelad shareef. Therefore, his statement in this regard (about the Meelad not being permissible) is irrelevant.”

This also clearly proves that the people who refute and condemn Meelad shareef are minority. At the same time, they are such ignoramuses who cannot even debate with rightly guided Ulama. Hence, their opinion in this regard carries no weight or substance.
The opinion of Shah Haaji Mohammed Imdaadullah Makki May Allah have mercy on him
We now present the statement of someone whom the Deobandis consider not only their leader but someone who was a walking institute of learning. He says:
- Meelad shareef is something which is performed by everyone in the Ahle Haram. Therefore, this is sufficient for us as a proof.
(Shamaa’ime Imdaadiyah. 87).
- Our Ulama in the present day, whatever comes in front of their pen, they issue a fatwah without thinking. For the Ulama of zaahir, it is very important to also have knowledge of Baatin or inner knowledge. Without this, nothing can be considered as correct. There are certain Ulama who create a lot of confusion about Meelad shareef. It must also be borne in mind that the Ulama have also gone towards the fact that it is permissible and there is permissibility in this regard, why should there be so much of severity in condemning it. For us, merely following the (people) of Haramain is sufficient.
(Shamaaime Imdaadiyah 93).
- The behavior of this servant has always been to join the Meelad gatherings as a matter of fact (I consider it) a means of Barakah and also organize (this function).

The deviant also refute the use of the word “Eid”.
When the true Muslims use the word “Eid Meeladun Nabi” the dis-tractors become extremely upset. They also say that these people are deliberately adding another Eid to Islam when there is clearly only two Eids in Islam! However, these people are now adding a third Eid to Islam. However, we urge these people to kindly look at the following verse in Surah Maidah. The Quran declares:
Esa son of Maryam submitted, ‘O Allah our Lord, ‘sends down to us a tray of food from the heaven so that it may be an occasion of Eid (rejoicing) for us, for the first and the last of us and a sign from You, and provide for us and you are the best of Providers.
We see that in this verse when food came from the heavens for Bani Israeel, it was considered by them to be a day of Eid and yet, when the Holy Prophet peace be upon him comes to the earth, it is not a day of Eid for some deviants? They should genuinely look at themselves in the mirror. Can these people really be called true Muslims? Remember that the blessed arrival of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him is considered as the Eid of all Eids. After all, it was through him that we received the Eid in the first place! This also clearly proves that they are doing nothing but trying to confuse the pure beliefs of the Muslims by creating confusion of this nature.
Even those who have a little knowledge will know that the Holy Prophet peace be upon him also called the day of Juma, “Eid”. We present two Hadith shareef in this regard.
On the occasion of one Juma, the Holy Prophet peace be upon him is reported to have stated that, “O Muslims, without doubt, this is the day which the Almighty azza wa jall has made a day of Eid . Therefore, have a bath, and he who has fragrance, there will be no harm if he uses this fragrance and hold fast to Miswaak.”
(Mishkaat shareef. 123)
It is reported that once when Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas May Allah have mercy on him recited the verse about the completion of Allah’s favour upon the Muslims in the form of Islam, a Jew who was standing nearby mentioned that if this was revealed to them, they would have made that day into a day of Eid. Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas May Allah have mercy on him replied, “When this verse was revealed, for us, on that day there were two Eids that were together. One was Juma and the other was the day of Arafah.”
(Mishkaat shareef. 121)
We ask you, are there only two Eids or more than two Eids? These reports prove to us that the blessed Ashaab considered the day of Juma as Eid and also the day of Arafah as Eid. This proves that these detractors are only out there to create confusion among the Muslims that there are only two Eids in Islam. As a matter of fact, they are trying their level best to distract the Muslims and move them away from the true love which they should possess for the Holy Prophet peace be upon him. Our answer to them is that if “true love” meant only following the Holy Prophet peace be upon him in things; such as Salah etc, what would be their opinion of those munaafiqs who lived in the time of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him and matched the Ashaab in acts like Salah etc? We are sure that they would consider these munaafiqs as being true Muslims after all, these are their brethren in faith!
As matter of fact, eminent Ulama of Islam also consider this day of Meelad as the day of Eid. as a matter of fact, they consider the entire day and night of the 12th of Rabi ul Awwal as a day of Eid. Moulana Yusuf bin Ismail Nabhani May Allah have mercy on him states that, “Almighty Allah azza wa jall bestow His Divine Mercy upon that person who makes the night of this blessed month into Eid.”
(Anwaare Mohammedi. 31)
Muhaqqiq alal Itlaaq, Allamah Shah Abdul Haq Muhaddith Dehlwi May Allah have mercy on him states, “Almighty Allah azza wa jall shower His Divine Blessing upon that person who makes the night of the blessed month in which the Holy Prophet peace be upon him was born into Eid so that those people, in whose heart there is the disease of enmity and hypocrisy, can be terribly insulted.”
(Ma thabata minas sunnah. 60)
These eminent Ulama have clearly proven that to celebrate Meelad shareef and to consider this day and night as a day of Eid is absolutely correct and proper. As a matter of fact, the confusions created by the distracters are also destroyed and the truth has become apparent.
To stand up during Meelad
When we say that one should stand up in Meelad shareef, we mean that when Durood and Salaam is recited upon the Holy Prophet peace be upon him people in respect and reverence, should stand up. This is a display of respect for the Holy Prophet peace be upon him which the sign of a true Muslim. As a proof for this, we present a few statements of some eminent Ulama in Islam.
Allamah Syed Ahmed Zaini Daylaan May Allah have mercy on him – Head Shafi Mufti- Makkah shareef
This giant of Ahle Sunnah wa Jamaah explains, “There is a practice among the people that when they hear the blessed zikr of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him, they stand up with respect. This is a highly recommended act. The reason is that this signifies respect for the Holy Prophet peace be upon him and this act of standing up in respect has been the practice of many eminent Ulama (of the Ahle Sunnah wa Jamaah) and these Ulama have been regarded as the leaders and spokes people (of Islam).”

The opinion of Allamah Ali bin Burhaanudeen Halbi Shafei May Allah have mercy on him
He states, “The practice of standing up in respect when hearing the blessed name of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him has been the practice of one of the great leaders of Islam and who was renowned for his piety, namely Imam Taqiudeen Subki May Allah have mercy on him. Many eminent Ulama of that period and era also followed his example in this regard.”
The act of Imam Subki’s May Allah have mercy on him standing!
We will explain this amazing incident and the immense respect and reverence which was displayed by this eminent scholar of the Ahle Sunnah wa Jamaah. Some have explained that once, there were numerous Ulama present in front of this great personality of Ahle Sunnah.
There was a naat khwan who began to read the poem in praise of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him composed by Abu Zakariyah Yahya Sarsari. the words of this poem went as, “The praise upon the Holy Prophet peace be upon him should be certainly written by one who is proficient in the art of writing and these words should be recorded in silver and even if this is done, still too, it would be less and when a pious person hears these words, they immediately stand with respect or stand up on their knees”
When he heard these words, Imam Subki May Allah have mercy on him immediately stood up with respect and everyone who was present also stood up with respect. It is said that there was an air of immense spiritualism and light at that moment. These eminent Ulama of Ahle Sunnah wa Jamaah standing up with respect and reverence is sufficient proof for us.”

The opinion of Shaikh Abdur Rahman Safuri Shafi May Allah have mercy on him
He states, “No one can refute standing with respect when hearing about the blessed birth of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him. The reason is that this is considered as a Bidat-e-Hasanah. There is also a group of Ulama who have also given a fatwah of permissibility to stand up on this occasion. The reason is that this is an act which displays extreme respect and reverence for the Holy Prophet peace be upon him. Respect and reverence for him is certainly Waajib upon every believer. There is also no doubt that to stand up with respect when hearing about his blessed birth is among the acts of showing respect and reverence for his blessed being. This writer himself, (in other words Abdur Rahman Safuri) states that, ‘By Allah! who has sent the Holy Prophet peace be upon him as a mercy for the universe, if I was able to stand on my head, I would do that so that I can achieve nearness to the Divine Court of Allah azza wa jall”.

The words of Arif Rabbani, Hadrat Shaikh Haji Imdaadullah Muhaajir Makki May Allah have mercy on him
The practice of this servant has always been to join Meelad shareef. As a matter of fact, I organize the Meelad considering it as a means of barakah. And I also find immense spiritual joy and happiness while standing (in the Meelad shareef).

Nafil in Rabi ul Awwal
Since this is the blessed month in which the Holy Prophet peace be upon him was born, one should make it a habit of reading twenty rakah of Nafil Salah every day from the first till the twelfth. After surah fatiha, one should read surah Ikhlas twenty-one times and then convey the thawab of this to the Holy Prophet peace be upon him. This should also be conveyed to the Ashaab, the Awliyah, the Ulama and the general Muslim Marhumeen. If one does not have the strength to do this for complete twelve days, one should at least perform these nafil on the second and the twelfth.
The Holy Prophet peace be upon him has also given a person the glad tidings of Jannah in his dream for reading this nafil Salah. There is also no doubt that to see the Holy Prophet peace be upon him in a dream is exactly like seeing him physically because satan does not have the power to impersonate his blessed features.
One should also increase in reading the Durood shareef in this month especially the below mentioned Durood shareef:
اَللّٰھُمَّ صَلِّ عَلٰی مُحَمَّدٍ کَمَا صَلَّیْتَ عَلٰی اِبْرَاھِیْمَ وَعَلٰی اٰلِ اِبْرِاھِیْمَ اِنَّکَ حَمِیْدٌ مَّجِیْدٌ
This should be read after the Esha salah one hundred and twenty-five times. If a person reads this Durood shareef with sincerity, he will certainly see the Holy Prophet peace be upon him in his dream. The second Durood shareef is:
اَلصَّلٰوۃُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَیْکَ یَا رَسُوْلَ اللّٰہِ
If anyone reads this Durood shareef fifty thousand times, and if he does so with sincerity, he will certainly see the Holy Prophet peace be upon him in his dream. In the treatise, “Kitaabul Awraad”, it is mentioned that when the new moon of Rabi ul Awwal shareef is seen, on the same night, one should read sixteen rakah of nafil. Two each. In every rakah, after Surah Fatiha, he should read Surah Ikhlas three times each. When he completes sixteen rakah, he should read the following Durood shareef one thousand times:
اَللّٰھُمَّ صَلِّ عَلٰی مُحَمَّدِ نِ النَّبِیِّ الْاُمِّیِّ رَحْمَۃُ اللّٰہِ وَبَرَکَاتُہٗ
He should continue in this manner for twelve days. Again, if he does this sincerely, he will most certainly see the Holy Prophet peace be upon him in his dream. One should read this after Esha Salah and also make sure that when he goes to sleep, he is in Wudu.
