Months of Islam

In Islam, there are twelve months and this is mentioned in Surah Taubah (9), verse 36, the Quran declares:

Undoubtedly, the number of months with Allah is twelve in the Book of Allah since the day He made the Heavens and Earth four of them are sacred. This is the right religion, then wrong not yourselves in these months, and fight the infidels at all times, as they fight with you, all times And know that Allah is with the pious ones.

Sacred months:

There are four months which are considered as ‘the sacred months’ in Islam. Three of them come in sequence and one is a separate entity. They are Zil Qa’dah, Zil Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab. The reason that they are considered as ‘the sacred months’ is because there is tremendous reward for ibaadah in these months. In like manner, performing sin and transgression in these months also carry a heavy burden of punishment. Hence, one should increase one’s ibaadah in these months and endeavour to save oneself from committing sin. Even in the days of ignorance, they were considered as sacred months. They never used to cause war or kill anyone in these months. However, with the coming of Islam, these months became even more sacred. These months were so sacred in those days that the Arabs kept their swords away in these months. They used to also refrain from raiding and pillaging. People also did not fear their enemies in these months. It is said that in these months, even a person who had murdered someone’s father could meet with him without the fear of revenge.

(Ajaa’ibul Makhluqaat. 44)

Some of the famous events which occurred on the day of Ashurah or on the 10th of this month

Virtuous Practices to Observe on this Auspicious Day

There is no doubt that this is a very auspicious and sacred day and all types of good deeds whether big or small carries with it tremendous reward. A few of those actions are as follows:

  1. To pass your hand over the head of an orphan as a means of receiving Allah’s Mercy.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas May Allah have mercy on him narrates that the Holy Prophet peace be upon him has stated:

“Whichever person passes his hand over the head of an orphan on the day of Ashurah, the Almighty azza wa jall will elevate this person with the same amount of degrees in status in Jannah as the number of hair on (the head of the orphan).

(Ghunyatut Taalibeen. 2/53).

In like manner, in all times, there is tremendous reward in showing mercy and kindness for an orphan whether it is the day of Ashurah or any other day.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Umaamah May Allah have mercy on him narrates that the Holy Prophet peace be upon him has stated:

“Whoever, strictly for the pleasure of Allah azza wa jall, passes his hands over the head of an orphan, for every strand of hair, a reward will be recorded for him (on those strands over which his hands passed). And whoever takes an orphan boy or girl in his care with kindness, then he and I will be like these two fingers in Jannah.” He then joined his two blessed fingers.

(Imam Ahmed, Imam Tirmidi May Allah have mercy on them)

(Mishkaat. 423)

  1. To make Ghusal on this day protects one from all ailments.

The Holy Prophet peace be upon him has stated:

“A person who makes Ghusal on the day of Ashurah, will not become victim to any sickness except death.”

(Ghunyatut Taalibeen. 2/53)

  1. One should seek pardon for one’s sins as the Almighty azza wa jall pardons the sins of people.

It is said that once a revelation was sent to Nabi Moosa alaihis and he was commanded:

“Command your nation that they should seek pardon in My Divine Court for their sins on the tenth of Muharram. And when the tenth day of Muharram appears, they should come to Me, in other words, they should make taubah. I will pardon their sins.

(Faizul Qadeer Sharah Jaamius Sagheer. 3/34)

  1. To place Surmah in one’s eyes.

The Holy Prophet peace be upon him has stated:

“That person who places Ismad surmah in his eyes on the day of Ashurah, his eyes will never pain.

(Bahiqi shareef from Hadrat Sayyiduna ibn Abbas May Allah have mercy on him).

Hadrat Mulla Ali Qari May Allah have mercy on him in his famous treatise, “Al Maudu’ aatul Kabeer” also advises that when one places surmah in his eyes on this day, he should not have the intention of displaying happiness or joy. The reason is that this is the practise of the Khaariji because they also display happiness on this day. One should simply make the intention that he is following the command of the hadith shareef.

  1. One should prepare a large feast for one’s family on this day for one’s family so that Allah azza wa jall will increase and expand the sustenance in that house for the entire year.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Masud May Allah have mercy on him narrates that the Holy Prophet peace be upon him has stated:

“Whosoever on the day of Ashurah spends freely on his family then the Almighty azza wa jall will expand (the sustenance in this house) the entire year.” Hadrat Sayyiduna Sufyan Thouri May Allah have mercy on him mentions that “we had tried this, and this is exactly what happened.” (Imam Bahiqi May Allah have mercy on him in the Shuhubul Imaan. Mishkaat shareef. 170).

Hadrat Mehbube subhaani Qutbe Rabbani, Sayyiduna Shaikh Syed Abdul Qadir Jilani May Allah have mercy on him in the “Ghunyatut Taalibeen. 2/54, writes that, “Hadrat Sayyiduna Sufyan Thouri May Allah have mercy on him had stated that, “we had tried this for fifty years and we only experienced expansiveness in our sustenance.”

In like manner, Allamah Munaawih May Allah have mercy on him in the Faizul Qadeer, 6/236 also writes, “Hadrat Sayyiduna Jaber May Allah have mercy on him has also stated that, ‘We had tried this and found it to be consistent.” Hadrat Sayyiduna ibn Ayniyah May Allah have mercy on him has also stated that, “We have tried this nearly fifty to sixty years and only experienced expansiveness in our sustenance.” Hence, our advice to Muslims is that they should make an effort to follow this Prophetic advice and prepare a large feast for their friends and family.

  1. To visit the sick on this day carries with it, great reward.

The Holy Prophet peace be upon him has stated:

“Whoever visits the sick on the day of Ashurah, it is as if he has visited all the sick people of mankind.”

(Ghunyatut Taalibeen. 54)

  1. There is also great reward in giving people water or milk to drink on the day of Ashurah.

The Holy Prophet peace be upon him has stated:

“Whosoever feeds water on the day of Ashurah, then (for that moment) he has not disobeyed the Almighty azza wa jall.”

(Ghunyatut Taalibeen. 2/54)

  1. To keep fast on this day also carries great reward and one should also instruct those one’s guardianship to also keep fast.

We present a few ahadith in this regard:

The Holy prophet peace be upon him has stated:

“Keep fast on the day of Ashurah, on this day the Prophets used to also keep fast.”

(Jaamius Sagheer. 4/215)

Explaining this hadith shareef, Allama Munaawi May Allah have mercy on him states that there is no doubt that the status of fasting on Ashurah is indeed very supreme and its sacredness has appeared over a number of years. Ibn Rajab has stated that on this day, Nabi Nuh alaihis salaam and Nabi Moosa alaihis and various other Prophets also kept fast. Even the Ahle Kitab used to fast on this day.

Even in the days of ignorance, some of the Quraish used to also fast. It is said that one of the amazing things of this day is that even the animals keep fast. Khateeb in his Taarikh states that even the birds keep fast on this day.

It is mentioned from Khalifah Al Qadir billah that every day he used to send food to be placed for the ants, however, on the day of Ashurah, they never used to eat the food.

(Faizul Qadeer. 4/215. Nuzhatul Majaalis. 1/145).

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah May Allah have mercy on him narrates that the Holy Prophet peace be upon him has stated:

After the month of Ramadan, the most supreme of fast is the (Ashurah) fast in the month of Muharram. And after the Fard Salah, the best of Salah is in the night.

(Muslim, Mishkaat p. 171)

Hadrat Sayyiduna ibn Abbas May Allah have mercy on him narrates:

I have not seen the Holy Prophet peace be upon him search for and bestow so much of dignity on any another day of fast as the fast on the day of Ashurah and the fast during the month of Ramadan.

(Bukhari, Mishkaat shareef. 178)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas May Allah have mercy on him narrates that:

When the Holy Prophet peace be upon him entered Madina shareef, he found that the Jews were fasting on the day of Ashurah. He asked them what day this was they were fasting on, and they replied, “This is that day on which the Almighty azza wa jall had saved Nabi Moosa alaihis salaam and his nation and on this day, the Almighty azza wa jall had drowned Pharaoh and his nation. Therefore, as a mark of appreciation, Nabi Moosa alaihis salaam kept fast.” Thereafter, the Holy Prophet – peace be upon him – stated, “compared to you, we are more entitled and closer to Nabi Moosa – peace be upon him. He then kept fast and also instructed others to do the same.

(Bukhari, Mihskaat shareef. 180)

Hadrat Sayyidah Hafsa May Allah have mercy on her narrates that:

The Holy Prophet peace be upon him never used to leave four things, fasting on the day of Ashurah, fasting in the ten days of Zil Hijjah, in other words, the first nine days (of Zil Hajj), fasting on three days (13th, 14th, 15th) every month and the two rakah before the fard of Fajr Salah.”

(Nasa’i, Mishkaat shareef. 180)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas May Allah have mercy on him narrates that:

When the Holy Prophet peace be upon him kept the fast for the day of Ashurah and also instructed others to keep fast, the Ashaab asked, “O Prophet of Allah! without doubt this is the day which the Jews and Christians hold sacred.” The Holy Prophet peace be upon him replied, “If I live until the next year, then too I will keep this fast.”

(Muslim, Mishkaat shareef. 178)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abi Qatadah May Allah have mercy on him narrates that the Holy Prophet peace be upon him has stated:

“I have firm faith in Allah azza wa jall that fasting on the day of Ashurah eliminates the sins of the past year.”

(Muslim shareef. Mishkaat shareef)

Incident:

Imam Nasafi May Allah have mercy on him explains that there was once a Muslim who had been captured by the disbelievers. He escaped from prison on the day of Ashurah. Obviously the disbelievers went in search of him. However, when they approached him, he made dua, “O Allah! with the barakah of the day of Ashurah, protect me from these people.” The Almighty azza wa jall then made the disbelievers blind and they could not see him. This Muslim was also fasting on that day. When the time of Iftaar approached, there was nothing to eat and he fell off to sleep in this state of hunger. In his dream, he saw an Angel giving him sweet drink which he drank. After this, he lived for another ten years without having a need for food or water.”.

(Nuzhatul Majaalis. 1/145)

  1. To give charity and to keep fast is a very great and noble deed on the day of Ashurah. The sins of the person are cancelled and he also increases in status.

Incident:

It is reported that once a poor person approached the Qadi of his city and told him to help and assist him through the barakah of this day. The Qadi refused to do so. However, a Christian was watching this incident and then gave the person so much that he was very happy. When night approached, the Qadi saw a dream and in this dream, he saw a huge mansion made of gold and it was also studded with rubies and other valuable stones. When he asked who this mansion belonged to, he was told that if he had assisted the poor person, it could have belonged to him. However, since he had refused to help the poor person, it will be given to a certain Christian who helped this poor person.

When the Qadi awoke, he approached the Christain person and offered him a hundred thousand in return for the thawab of helping the poor person. However, the Christian person replied that even if he offered an entire mansion of wealth, he was not prepared to give him this reward. He then read the Kalimah and accepted Islam.

(Nuzhatul Majaalis. 1/146)

Incident:

In the treatise, “Roudul Afkaar” it is reported that once a person gave seven dirhams in charity on the day of Ashurah and continued to wait the entire year for its reward. When the day of Ashurah came the next year, he approached an Alim and said, “I have heard that if a person gives one single dirham in charity on the day of Ashurah, in reward of this, the Almighty azza wa jall will give him one thousand dirhams.” The scholar replied that this was correct. However, this person replied, “I do not believe this because the previous year I had given seven dirhams in charity and the entire year has gone by and I have received nothing in return.” During the night, while this same person was sleeping, a person approached this same person in his dream and handed him seven thousand dirhams and also said to him, “Take this seven thousand dirhams, if you only had patience until the day of Qiyamah, it would have been better for you, however, you did not have patience.”

(Nuzhatul Majaalis. 1/147)

Things that are not allowed on the day of Ashurah:

  • It is not permitted to wear black clothes on the day of Ashurah.
  • It is not permitted to bang your chest or tear your clothes, or pull your hair as the Shias do.
  • It is not allowed for you to publicly mourn on this day. We should refrain from all of these Haraam acts.

(Al Moudo aatul Kabeer).

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Masud May Allah have mercy on him narrates that the Holy Prophet peace be upon him has stated:

It is not in our custom that one should hit one’s face, tear one’s clothes and scream like the ignorant scream.

(Bukhari shareef, Muslim shareef and Mishkaat shareef. 150)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bardah May Allah have mercy on him narrates that:

Once Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Moosa May Allah have mercy on him fell unconscious. As his wife approached him, she began to scream and cry loudly. Her title was Umme Abdullah. However, when Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Moosa May Allah have mercy on him regained consciousness, he said to her that the Holy Prophet peace be upon him had declared that he is away (or not part of those people) who pulls their hair, who screams and cry loudly and those who tear their clothes (in time of grief).”

(Sahih Bukhari shareef, Sahih Muslim shareef. Mishkaat shareef. 150)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Malik Ash’ari May Allah have mercy on him narrates that the Holy Prophet peace be upon him had stated that:

“There are four things which are still found in my followers from the days of ignorance.

They are:

  1. They are boastful about their family lineage.
  2. They insult others, they look for faults in the family lineage of
  3. They seek for rain relaying on prediction from astronomers.
  4. They display grief through (screaming aloud and crying).

If the person who displays this type of grief does not make Taubah before they die, on the day of judgement, they will be made to stand one side and given two shirts, one made from sulphur and the other which is made to itch.”

(Muslim shareef. Mishkat shareef. 150)

Various Nafl Salah and noble actions to be performed in this month:

It is said that if a person reads this dua on the first day of Muharram, he or she will be protected from the satan and two angels will protect the person the entire year. The dua is:

(Nuzahatul Majaalis. 1/145)

Fasting in Muharram

  1. Hadrat Sayyiduna Anas May Allah have mercy on him narrates that the Holy Prophet peace be upon him has stated that,” Whoever keeps fast on the first Juma of Muharram, his past sins would would be pardoned.”

  1. The Holy Prophet peace be upon him has stated that whosoever keeps these three days of fast, in other words, they are on the days of Thursday, Friday and Saturday, its reward will be recorded equal to nine hundred years’ fast.

  1. In the Tabarani shareef, it is recorded that the Holy Prophet peace be upon him has stated that whosoever keeps fast in Muharram, one day of fast is equal to thirty days of fast.

  1. Hadrat Sayyidah Ayesha May Allah have mercy on her narrates that the Holy Prophet peace be upon him has stated that, “Whoever keeps the first ten days of fast until the Ashurah, then he will be an inheritor of Firdous (or Jannah).

(Nuzhatul Majaalis. 1/145).

Nafil on the first night of Muharram

When a person sees the new moon of Muharram, he should read two rakah of nafil salah. In each rakah he should read Surah Fatiha and Surah Ikhlas 11 times and then read the following:

Another Nafil salah is also recorded from Hadrat Khwaja Gareeb Nawaz May Allah have mercy on him who says that the person should read the two rakah of nafil; in each rakah after the Surah Fatiha, he should read Surah Yaseen once.

In another narration, it’s mentioned that the person should read six rakah of nafil salah. In each rakah he should read Surah Fatiha and Surah Ikhlas ten times. This should be broken up into two rakah each. As a reward for this, the Almighty azza wa jall will give the person two thousand mansions in Jannah. Each mansion will be built with valuable stones and each mansion will have a mimbar built with green sapphire. On each, there will be a maiden from Jannah. Besides this, six thousand difficulties will be removed from the person and six thousand reward will be recorded for him.
