The eminent Khalifah of Sayyidi Ala Hadrat, Imam Ahle Sunnah, Ash Shah Imam Ahmed Raza Khan May Allah have mercy on him, namely His Eminent, Hadrat Moulana Andul Aleem Siddiqui – May Allah have mercy on him – delivered a very inspirational lecture on the occasion of Eidul Fitr in Port of Spain, West Indies. Taking into consideration the need of the day, this was then prepared into Urdu and published by Haji Mohammed Haneef Tayyib. It was also published in the monthly magazine entitled “Ahle Sunnah”. There is no doubt that even in the present time, there is a great need for people to learn something from this and be able to take away some lesson from this.

Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem

Dear Brothers in Islam!

Firstly, I take the opportunity from the bottom of my heart to congratulate each and every one of you on this blessed occasion. May Almighty azza wa jall accept our fast, our Taraweeh and all our ibaadah and include us among those who are His chosen servants.

Ameen.

On this day, I wish to invite you towards a few important points. These are such things as:

  • What is the essence of Eidul Fitr?
  • What is the subject matter of Eidul Fitr?
  • Why should we celebrate and enjoy this occasion?
  • What are some of the important principles that we should bear in mind and which we should fulfil on this important occasion?

There is no doubt that when we look at the world today, we will see that when any person or group achieves some success, their hearts become overjoyed and they adopt different methods of displaying this happiness and joy. All of you are fully aware that when one becomes rich or earns some wealth, or when someone achieves a very important post or wins some special reward or if a person is blessed with a child or when his child is married, then people adopt all sorts of methods to display their happiness and joy. Above this, there are also a certain group of people who worship the sun. They do this because they sincerely believe that the sun gives them life and light. They also praise the sun for these bounties. Therefore, on the day of new year in their calender they have huge celebrations around the world. In like manner, those countries which are determined by certain seasons and they rely on these seasons for their bounties and riches, such as people in India who have a special celebration called Holi. They go out of their way in celebrating this occasion. They firmly believe that now that the season of spring has arrived, they will see many bounties and riches in the form of good crops.

Yet, there is a special nation on this earth who firmly believe that this world and the riches of this world is something which comes and goes. These riches of the world is something which lasts merely a few days. Therefore, since they think like this, they believe that there is no importance in celebrating something which is only for a few days. As a matter of fact, real happiness and joy is something which lasts forever, therefore to celebrate something like this is actual and true joy. Real joy and happiness is something which brings a person closer to Allah azza wa jall. The reason is that the Centre of all of these bounties is in fact the Almighty azza wa jall. Therefore, real greatness and glory is that which has been given to us by the Almighty azza wa jall. The Almighty azza wa jall is the real Owner of all bounties, all joys and all powers and He is the One who bestows this upon His creation.

When a person becomes the beloved of Allah azza wa jall, he is the richest and the most powerful person on earth. As for that person who forgets the Almighty azza wa jall and whatever wealth or power he possesses this is certainly not a mercy but a means of destruction. It is a tragedy that this weakness has become common among people. Pertaining to this, the Almighty azza wa jall declares in Surah Bani Israel, verse 83 and Surah Zumar, verse 8:

وَ اِذَاۤ اَنْعَمْنَا عَلَی الۡاِنۡسٰنِ اَعْرَضَ وَ نَاٰبِجَانِبِہٖ ۚ وَ اِذَا مَسَّہُ الشَّرُّکَانَ یَــُٔوۡسًا ﴿۸۳﴾

And when We bestow a favour on man, he turns away his face and moves far away towards himself

And when any trouble touches man, he calls upon his Lord leaning towards Him, then when Allah grants him any favour from Himself, he forgets what he called for before.

In like manner, the Almighty azza wa jall warns man as He does in Surah Bqarah, verse 156 and Surah Nahl, verse 96 that:

وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّکُمْ بِشَیۡءٍ مِّنَ الْخَوۡفِ وَالْجُوۡعِ وَنَقْصٍ مِّنَ الۡاَمۡوٰلِ وَالۡاَنۡفُسِ وَالثَّمَرٰتِ ؕ وَبَشِّرِ الصّٰبِرِیۡنَ﴿۱۵۵﴾ۙ

And necessarily, We shall put you to test with something of fear and hunger and with some loss of wealth and lives and fruits; and give glad tidings to the patient.

What is with you- will be exhausted and what is with Allah is to remain forever.

From this, we can see that true bounty is that which comes from Allah azza wa jall and that which brings us closer to Allah azza wa jall and allows us to become the beloved servants of Allah azza wa jall. Every person with a little common sense will understand and realise that this is a bounty which he should be proud of. He should celebrate something like this because this is happiness which will last forever and its fruits will last forever.

The month of Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The days on which the Divine Blessing of Allah came, those are also known as Ayya mul lah or the days of Allah azza wa jall. We have also been instructed to celebrate these days and display happiness on these days. There is no doubt that in the month of Ramadan, the Almighty azza wa jall had certainly revealed a very great bounty. It is that Divine Book which has showed us how we can use the bounties of Allah azza wa jall in a proper manner. A book which has showed us the straight path and pertaining to this great gift, the Almighty azza wa jall declares in Surah Nahl, verse 89:

وَ نَزَّلْنَا عَلَیۡکَ الْکِتٰبَ تِبْیٰنًا لِّکُلِّ شَیۡءٍ وَّ ہُدًی وَّ رَحْمَۃً وَّ بُشْرٰی لِلْمُسْلِمِیۡنَ ﴿٪۸۹﴾

And We have sent down this Quran on you in which everything is clearly explained and as guidance and mercy and good tidings for the Muslims.

This great Divine Bounty is the Holy Quran and pertaining to its moment of revelation, the Quran declares in Surah Baqarah, verse 185:

شَہۡرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِیۡۤ اُنۡزِلَ فِیۡہِ الْقُرْاٰنُ ہُدًی لِّلنَّاسِ وَبَیِّنٰتٍ مِّنَ الْہُدٰی وَالْفُرْقَانِۚ

The month of Ramadan in which the Quran was sent down, a direction for the people and guidance and clear signs of judgement.

Every minute in this blessed month is to be remembered as when the Divine Book of Allah azza wa jall was revealed. Hence, in celebration of this fact, as Muslims, we have been instructed to fast during the day and spend the night in Salah. As far as fasting is concerned, the Quran declares:

فَمَنۡ شَہِدَ مِنۡکُمُ الشَّہۡرَ فَلْیَصُمْہُؕ

that whoso of you finds this month, necessarily, he should fast in it,

In verse 183, same Surah, the Quran declares:

یٰۤاَیُّہَا الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا کُتِبَ عَلَیۡکُمُ الصِّیَامُ کَمَا کُتِبَ عَلَی الَّذِیۡنَ مِنۡ قَبْلِکُمْ لَعَلَّکُمْ تَتَّقُوۡنَ﴿۱۸۳﴾ۙ

O believers! Fasting has been made obligatory upon you as is was made obligatory upon those before you, so that you may become pious.

This is also the reason that a few verses later, the Holy Prophet peace be upon him has been instructed to answer the question from those people who question him about Allah azza wa jall. The Quran declares in verse 186:

وَ اِذَا سَاَلَکَ عِبَادِیۡ عَنِّیۡ فَاِنِّیۡ قَرِیۡبٌؕ اُجِیۡبُ دَعْوَۃَ الدَّاعِ اِذَا دَعَانِۙ فَلْیَسْتَجِیۡبُوۡا لِیۡ وَلْیُؤْمِنُوۡا بِیۡ لَعَلَّہُمْ یَرْشُدُوۡنَ﴿۱۸۶﴾

And O beloved, when My slaves ask you about Me, then I am indeed near, I accept the call of the caller when he calls upon Me; then they should obey My Commands and believe in Me, so that they may get the way.

In summary, it is through fasting that we are able to control our animals instincts in the form of our nafs or carnal desires and achieve the nearness of the Almighty azza wa jall. And to achieve this nearness is the greatest bounty of all bounties.

In the Hadith shareef, it is mentioned that the smell which emanates from the mouth of the person fasting, it is more beloved to the Almighty azza wa jall than even Musk. In one Hadith-e-Qudsi, it is mentioned that the Almighty azza wa jall has declared that, “fasting is for Me and I will give its reward.” In another hadith shareef it is mentioned that, “the reward for a person fasting is Me”. This clearly proves that fasting is one of the main means of achieving the Divine Pleasure of Allah azza wa jall and of reaching His Divine Court.

As for the ibaadah in the nights of Ramadan, the Quran turns our direction towards this in the form of Surah Qadr which explains:

اِنَّاۤ اَنۡزَلْنٰہُ فِیۡ لَیۡلَۃِ الْقَدْرِ﴿۱﴾ۚۖ وَ مَاۤ اَدْرٰىکَ مَا لَیۡلَۃُ الْقَدْرِ ؕ﴿۲﴾ لَیۡلَۃُ الْقَدْرِ۬ۙ خَیۡرٌ مِّنْ اَلْفِ شَہۡرٍ ؕ﴿ؔ۳﴾

Undoubtedly, We sent it down in the blessed and valuable night. And what you know, what the blessed night is? The blessed and valuable Night is better than a thousand months.

At one place, it is said to us that the Quran was revealed in the month of Ramadan and in another place, it tells that it was specifically revealed in the night of Qadr. This proves that the night of Qadr is certainly a night in the month of Ramadan. When the blessed Ashaab questioned the Holy Prophet peace be upon him about this night, he advised them to search for it in the month of Ramadan. On further inquiry by the blessed Ashaab, he revealed that it was among the last ten odd nights. This is one of the main reasons that the Holy Prophet peace be upon him advised his ummah to increase their ibaadah in this night. The nights of Ramadan have been given as a blessing to this ummah and therefore, the practice of Taraweeh. This is the reason that people in his generation, which is considered as the best of generation, used to make sure that they perform the 20 Rakah Taraweeh Salah.

While in Salah and fasting, a person is able to control his Nafs Ammaarah and due to this, he is able to achieve the nearness of the Almighty azza wa jall. Today is the day in which we mark this achievement of gaining this closeness. Therefore, this day is also a day of thanks or Youm-e-Ta shak kur”. Today is the day on which the people of Imaan leave their homes and congregate in the house of Allah azza wa jall. They do this with the firm belief and conviction of giving thanks to the Almighty azza wa jall for this great blessing and bounty. Therefore, today is the day of Eid and a day of happiness for the Muslims.

In the Hadith shareef it is mentioned that, ‘when a person is full of hope in the Divine Mercy of Allah azza wa jall and leaves his home towards the Eid ghah reciting the Takbeer, then the Angels welcomes that person and allow the rain of blessing to fall on that person.’ At that moment, a voice is heard declaring, ‘My slave will certainly receive his full reward.’

At the same time, while a Muslim is beginning his Salah with six extra Takbeers and performing his Sajdah of Shukr, on the other side he also has to sacrifice his wealth in the form of Sadqatul Fitr. This is obligatory upon every sensible Muslim; even upon a small child on behalf of whom, the elder has to give this portion.

The religion of Islam is something which encompasses every facet of a Muslim’s life. This religion also educates us about the smallest of details in our everyday affair and also guides us in this respect. One of the key principles of this education that we are never to forget the Almighty azza wa jall and while relying on Him, we should step forward.

My dear brothers! at this point, I wish to bring to your attention, a very great danger. Be aware, that whatever blessing and bounty you have received in this month of Ramadan, make sure that you safeguard it. As there are people who are always on the lookout on how to steal your wealth and property, in like manner, your Nafs and the satan are always looking for means and ways to steal your spiritual blessings from you. Today is the day of Eid and today you are extremely happy and joyous of earning these spiritual bounties. The doors of Divine Mercy are certainly opened for you and the breeze of forgiveness is being directed at you. Therefore, be aware and always be on the lookout for the evil scheming and plots of satan.

Beware, that the doors of the pubs and casinos are also open. The evil of cinemas and its openness is also there. The various advertisements inviting you towards sin and transgression are pointing at you as you walk on the street. Therefore, be careful. Protect this delicate window of Imaan which you possess against the attack of the satan. Protect your hard earned ibaadah and striving which you had performed during the day and night of Ramadan. Do not forget the hard lessons which your learnt in this blessed month. In this month you managed to control your Nafs, your hunger, your desires. At night you stayed awake and made sleep haram upon yourself. Therefore, after learning these hard lessons, you should be even more careful than anyone else. Save yourself from every small habit where you feel that this is the evil scheme of satan. In the month of Ramadan, you have performed more ibaadah than you would normally do. At this time also, do not allow the remembrance of Allah azza wa jall to leave your heart.

Through the act of Zakah and Sadqatul Fitr, you have learnt that there are also others who have right on your wealth. This wealth which you possess should not be only used by you. The Almighty azza wa jall has stated that, “on your wealth, there is also the right of those who ask for it and there is also the right for those who do not have it.” The wealth which the Almighty azza wa jall has given you, is not for play, pomp and fun. This is the trust of Allah azza wa jall and you are merely the protector of this wealth. If you have sincerely sold yourself and your wealth to the Almighty azza wa jall and you are a true believer, then you should also remember that your wealth does not belong to you, but belongs to the Almighty azza wa jall. You can only spend on yourself and your children as much as Allah azza wa jall has commanded you and not more than this, and you can only spend on them as you have been instructed to spend or the manner in which you have been instructed to spend. The rest of this wealth has to be given in the path of Allah azza wa jall and spent on those who are less fortunate than you.

O those who live in fancy mansions and palaces and those who sit in comfortable sofas. O those who drive around in fancy cars, we urge you for one single moment to consider those Muslim brothers who do not have two of plates to feed themselves, who do not have clothes to even cover themselves.

O those who eat seven course meals and wear fancy designer clothing and those who beautify their houses with all types of fancy fittings and fixtures. Remember something very important, you will never be respected in this world, until and unless you do not teach your future generation of the methods and ways in which they can truly achieve greatness in both the worlds. You will only achieve respect at that time, when you yourself are respected by your people. And this will only be possible when your nation possesses Imaan, knowledge and pious deeds.

My dear brothers, look at those around you, at other nations, who live near you. If you cannot learn a lesson from your great Muslim predecessors, then at least try to learn from those who claim to be Christians. How many Christian associations are there who are busy propagating their religion? How many libraries are found in this nation? How many intellectual groups and associations do they have? How many missionaries are there who are busy in their work day and night? Yet, what is your state today? If we accept that the population of Trinidad is 32 thousand, then thing about this:

  1. Did you have professionally run Madaaris where your children can learn to read the Quran properly?
  2. Do you have places that can teach hadith, fiqh and tasfeer?
  3. Do you have an expert scholar in your locality who can guide you in religious affairs?
  4. Do you have proper Islamic libraries?
  5. Do you have such qualified people who can answer the accusations of non-Muslim missionaries?
  6. Do you have funds which can help and assist poor Muslims among you?

My dear brothers! If you were able to gather the zakah as instructed in Islam and spent it as it should be spent or if you have some national fund available, most of your problems would be sorted out by now. As far as my responsibility is concerned, I have fulfilled it and have rung the bell of danger to you. I am also aware that there are certain people who are confusing Muslims on petty issues.

They do this with the purpose so that they can hide what is halal into haraam and what is haraam into halal. These people are trying to create a new class in Islam. They believe that they will be able to deceive the innocent Muslim. This disunity has already been created among Muslims. My sincere wish is that these people do not start to make petty issues into larger disputes. There is no doubt that this type of disunity among us is even worse than what can happen from outside forces. These people are such idiots that they do not even realise that the world is rapidly been overtaken by non-religious people and atheists. Bad behaviour is also becoming very common. For a person to leave Islam and choose the path of infidelity or becoming a murtad is not new to us. We have seen this in the past. There is no doubt that every day, there is some new force which awakens against Islam and the Muslims. Hence, we have to be forever on guard. Even the very principles and pillars of Islam are being attacked.

I ask you my dear brothers, where are you? What are you thinking about? When will you awaken? Please, beware quickly of what is happening around you. Please protect this religion because it is through the collectivity of Islam only that you will survive. Almighty Allah azza wa jall give you the vision and foresight to ponder on this message. Hold fast to the rope of Imaan. Hold fast to the rope of the Ahle Sunnah wa Jamaah. The heart of Islam is proper belief or Aqaa’id, and over the centuries, Muslims have held fast to this aqeedah which is the belief of the Ahle Sunnah wa Jamaah. This has continued from the time of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him until the present day. This is also the belief of the majority of Muslims. Remain on the belief of the Ahle Sunnah and make dua that you die as a Sunni Muslim. I also make dua for you and may Allah azza wa jall accept my dua.

Ameen.
