Allah Almighty states in the Holy Quran:

Allah is not to leave the Muslims in the present state of affairs in which you are, until He separates impure from the pure.  And it is not befitting to the dignity of Allah that O general people! He let you know the unseen.  Yes, Allah chooses from amongst His messengers whom He pleases.  Then believe in Allah and His messengers.  And if you accept faith and fear, then there is great reward for you.

(Aale ‘Imran 3, Verse 179)

When the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – began the propagation of the Kalimah “La ilaaha illAllah Muhammadur Rasoolullah”, the infidels conspired against him in various ways and used their dirty tricks to mock him and his preaching of Islam but Allah Almighty always defended His beloved Habeeb as it is evident form the following verses of the Holy Quran.

When the infidels attributed this cheap attribute to him, Allah Almighty declared that indeed your enemies, who have said such things about you, are cut off from every good.  What they said will disappear but the praises We have attributed to you will remain through time.

When the infidels uttered profanities about him, Allah Almighty responded to them:

Undoubtedly, one who is your enemy, is cut off from every good.

(Al-Kauthar 108, Verse 3)

It is the method of lovers that when the lover hears that someone has been vulgar to his beloved, the lover himself respond on behalf of the beloved.  Here, Allah Almighty has responded to the infidels Himself.

Similarly, Allah Almighty has responded at many occasions.

When they said:

‘Shall we point you a person who will inform you that when being torn into pieces, you become small particles, you are then to be made new?

Has he forged a lie against Allah or is he afflicted with madness?’

(Al-Saba 34, Verse 7-8)

Allah Almighty stated:

Nay, but those who do not believe in the Hereafter are in the torment and far-gone error.

(Al-Saba 34, Verse 8)

When they said that he is mad, Allah Almighty swore oath three times and then stated:

You are not. by the grace of your Lord, mad.

(Al-Qalam 68, Verse 2)

And when they said:

You are not a messenger.

(Al-Ra’d 13, Verse 43)

Allah Almighty responded:

  Yasin.

  By the wise Quran.

No doubt, you are amongst the Messengers.

(Yasin 36, Verse 1-3)

When they said:

And they used to say, shall we indeed leave our gods, because of the saying of a mad poet?

(Al-Saaffaat 37, Verse 36)

He refuted them and stated:

No indeed, rather he has brought the truth and he has confirmed the Messengers.

(Al-Saaffaat 37, Verse 37)

He confirmed his authenticity then mentioned the chastisement of his enemies and stated:

Undoubtedly, you are to taste a painful agony.

(Al-Saaffaat 37, Verse 38)

When He narrated their saying:

Or they say, ‘He is a poet’

(Al-Tur 52, Verse 30)

He stated:

And We have not taught him to compose (poetic) verses.

(Yasin 36, Verse 69)

When He narrated their saying:

‘This is not but a calumny which he has fabricated, and some other people have helped him in it.

(Al-Furqan 25, Verse 4)

He called them liars and stated:

Undoubtedly, those unjust people have brought more falsehood.

(Al-Furqan 25, Verse 4)

When they said:

And they said, ‘what happened to this Messenger, he eats food, and walks about the markets’.

(Al-Furqan 25, Verse 7)

He replied to them and stated:

And as many Messengers We sent before you, they were all the same, they ate food and walked about in the markets.

(Al-Furqan 25, Verse 20)

(Tafsir Kabeer)

Kuffar conspired against the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him:

When some individuals from the tribes of Banu Khazraj and Banu Aus gave the holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him –  an invitation to arrive in Madinah Munawwarah the holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – gave the companions general permission that they should immigrate to Madinah Munawwarah forsaking Makkah Mukarramah.  Hence, firstly, Hazrat Abu Salimah immigrated and thereafter, the other companions followed one after the other.  When the infidels of Quraish were informed about it they began to put a stop to it, but it continued secretly until a large number of companions had already left for Madinah Munawwarah.  The only people left in Makkah were either in prison of Makkan infidels or helpless due to their deficiency.  The holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – had not yet received the command of emigration so he, and on his command, Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq and Hazrat Ali – may Allah be pleased with them – stayed in Makkah Mukarramah.

(Seerah Ibn Hishaam 191)

Deadly Conspiracy

When the infidels saw that the Muslims now have their helpers outside Makkah Mukarramah as well and the Ansaar have taken the immigrants in their custody, they feared that the holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – may also leave for Madinah Munawwarah and then attack on us with the army of His followers.  Hence, they organised a conference at “Darul Nadwah” in order to cease the doors of this threat.  There was no so-called wise or authoritative person of Makkah that did not participate in it, especially the leaders like Abu Sufyaan, Abu Jahl, ‘Atabah, Jubair Ibn Mut’im, Nadhr Ibn Haarith, Abul Bakhtari, Zam’ah Ibn Aswad, Hakeem Ibn Hizaam and Umayyah Ibn Khalaf were fronting.  The cursed satan had also arrived in the form of an old man enveloped in a sheet.  When he was asked about his name and lineage, he said, “I am a “Sheikh of Najd” and I have participated here to give you my advice.”  The cursed devil was thus included within.  When the conference started, Abul Bakhtari said, “You should capture Muhammad – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – in a room, tie his hands and feet, and then supply him food and water from a hole.”  “The Sheikh of Najd” (the satan) said, “It’s not a good idea.  By Lord! His faithful companions will definitely find out and free him even if it means by endangering their own lives in case if you capture him.”  Abul Aswad, Rabee’ah Ibn Umar and ‘Aamiri said, “We should banish Him from Makkah Mukarramah so that he stays in some other city, and in this way, we will get rid of his Quran recitation and the propagation of Islam.”  “Sheikh of Najd” (the satan) said in a crude manner, “To hell with this idea of yours!  If you take him out of the city he will turn all the tribes of Arabia into His followers and then preparing a massive army, he will plan an attack on you in such a way that you will be helpless to defend yourselves and then stay here as his slaves, so don’t even talk about exiling him.”  And then finally Abu Jahl, the cursed said, “In my opinion, one famous warrior from each tribe must take his stand with a sword, and plan a consensual attack in order to murder Muhammad (may Allah send peace and blessings upon him); in this way, the blame of the murder will become the responsibility of all tribes equally and the family of Banu Haashim will obviously become unable to fight with all the tribes in order to take retaliation for this murder.  They will definitely agree upon taking the blood-money collectively, we all will pay the amount of blood-money easily.”  Listening to this deadly conspiracy of Abu Jahl, Sheikh of Najd jumped out of joy and said, “Indeed!  This is the best of plans, and there is no other suggestion worthier than this.”

However, everyone accepted this evil suggestion with a consensual agreement and returned to their homes with this poisonous intention.  Allah Almighty has mentioned this incident in the holy Quran as follows:

And (O beloved Prophet)! Remember, when the infidels were plotting against you, to confine you or to slay you or to drive you forth. And they were plotting their own and Allah was devising His Own and Allah’s devise is the best.

(Al-Anfaal 8, Verse 30)

What was Allah’s devise?  Below you shall observe as to how He protected His beloved Messenger – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – and how He, the absolute and all Powerful Almighty Lord, dissolved the deadly conspiracy of the infidels into thin air.

(Seerah Ibn Hishaam 191-193)

Migration of the Master of Both Worlds

The moment the infidels of Makkah returned to their homes having concluded their conference, Hazrat Jibra’eel – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – descended with the command of Allah, Lord of the universe, “O Allah’s Messenger!  Tonight, you must not sleep in your bed but immigrate to Madinah Munawwarah.”  Hence, the holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – went to “His friend in the cave”, Hazrat Abu Bakr’s house and said, “Move the people of your house aside; I need to have a meeting with you.”  “May my parents be sacrificed for you, O Allah’s Messenger!  There is no one else save your wife ‘Aishah” said Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq.  Allah’s Messenger – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – stated, “Allah Almighty has granted me the permission to immigrate, O Abu Bakr.”  Hazrat Siddeq Akbar then requested, “May my parents be sacrificed for you, O Allah’s Messenger!  Grant me also the honour of accompanying you in the journey.”  He – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – accepted his request.  Hazrat Abu Bakr has been preparing his two she-camels for four months by feeding them acacia-leaves so that this transportation may be useful at the time of emigration.  He requested, “Please accept one of these camels, O Allah’s Messenger.”  “I do, but I shall pay its price” said the holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him.  Hazrat Abu Bakr accepted it in submission to the holy command of the Messenger – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him.  Since, Hazrat ‘Aishah was still a teenager thus, her elder sister Hazrat Asma Bint Abi Bakr – may Allah be pleased with them – made preparation for the travelling needs, and tearing the girdle of her waist into two pieces she tied the food-bag with one and the tip of the water-skin with the other.  It was so worthy of honour on the basis of which, she is remembered with the respectful epithet of “Dhaat Al-Nataaqatain” (The personality of the two girdles).  The holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – had hired an expert of map-reading, an infidel, namely Abdullah Ibn Uraiqat, gave him the two camels and told him to approach the cave of Thaur after three nights.  The holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – returned to his blessed house after having made all these arrangements.

(Bukhari 2/592)

Siege of the Prophetic Abode

The infidels of Makkah besieged the house of the holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – according to their plan and waited for Him to fall asleep in order to conduct the murdering attack.  There was no one else at his house besides Hazrat Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – and the holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – did not know that they had besieged His house with the intention of murder.  Although they were His worst enemies, but they had so much faith in His trustworthiness and honesty that they used to keep their belongings in his trust.  There were many things kept in his trust at that time too.  He instructed Hazrat Ali, “You should sleep in my bed covering my green sheet and come to Madinah Munawwarah after returning the things to their owners.”  Although it was a very sensitive and dangerous moment, but he had complete faith in his statement, “come to Madinah Munawwarah after returning the things to their owners” that he will remain alive and will definitely reach Madinah Munawwarah.  Hence, he slept very peacefully till morning in the holy Prophet’s – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – bed.  Being proud of this blessed opportunity Hazrat Ali stated in his couplets:

I protected the life that is much better than the ones’ walking on earth and making the Tawaaf of Ka’bah and kissing Hajar Aswad (the blessed black stone from Paradise) by endangering my life.

The Messenger of Allah – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – feared the conspiracy of the infidels of Makkah but Allah the Merciful kept Him safe from their conspiracy.

(Sharah Zarqaani ‘Ala Al-Mawaahib 2/95-96)

The holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – made Hazrat Ali sleep and then taking a handful of dust he recited the first few verses of Yaseen Shareef, came out and then throwing the dust over their heads, he safely walked past the group of infidels.  Neither anyone saw Him nor did they remember anything.  Another man that was not from amongst the group, informed them that (Hazrat) Muhammad – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – had already departed from here spraying sand over your heads.  When they felt, they realized that their heads were really soiled with sand particles.

(Tabqaat Ibn Sa’d 1/176)

The merciful Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – left his house and stood by the place called “Harwazah” and looking sadly at Ka’bah Mu’azzamah he said, “O the city of Makkah!  You are beloved to me more than the entire world.  Had I not been forced to go from here I would not have left.”

(Ibn Majah 3/518)

As if all of this was not enough, and as they  – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him –  their evil plans failing before their own eyes, they devised many such conspiracies but Allah Almighty saved His beloved from every trickery of theirs.

Final Resort:

When they realized that Islam could not be harmed outwardly and openly, they decided that they will dig the foundation of Islam from within disguised as Muslims.  That is when this filthy race of munafiq viz. hypocrites was born.

Outwardly they appeared to be Muslim and did everything that a dutiful Muslim is supposed to do, and they did it even better just like how the modern day hypocrites will make you feel intimidated by their outward actions etc.  They offered Salah with Muslims in the same mosque and fasted with them, and even participated with them in Jihad but their hearts were enraged with their enmity towards Islam and the beloved Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him.

They are such a conniving creation that even Iblis will seek refuge from their mockery.

Allah Almighty declared the following pertaining to their final abode:

Undoubtedly, the hypocrites are in the lowest section of the Hell, and you shall never get any helper for them.

(Al-Nisa 4, Verse 145)

What a shame!!!

Allah Almighty also stated the following about them in His Glorious Book:

They seek to deceive Allah and the believers, and in fact they deceive not but their own souls, and they perceive not.

(Al-Baqarah 2, Verse 9)

They were so self-conceited about their trickery that they boasted about their sick nature in the following manner:

In their hearts is a disease, so Allah has increased their disease and for them is a painful torment, the recompense of their lies.

And when it is said to them, create not disorder on the earth; they say, ‘we are but reformists’.

Beware! It is they who are the mischief-makers, but they perceive not.

And when it is said to them ‘believe as others have believed’, they say, ‘shall we believe as fools believed’, Beware! It is they who are the fools, but, they do not know.

And when they meet believers, they say, ‘we believed’, and when they are alone with their devils, they say, ‘We are with you, we are only mocking’.

Allah mocks at them (Befitting His Dignity) and leaves them to wander about in their contumacy.

(Al-Baqarah 2, Verse 10-15)

When their mischief went rife and the situation worsened, Allah Almighty warned them and revealed the following verse:

Allah is not to leave the Muslims in the present state of affairs in which you are, until He separates impure from the pure. And it is not befitting to the dignity of Allah that O general people! He let you know the unseen. Yes, Allah chooses from amongst His messengers whom He pleases. Then believe in Allah and His messengers. And if you accept faith and fear, then there is great reward for you.

(Aale ‘Imran 3, Verse 179)

Hypocrites Exposed!!!

Allah Almighty exposed the hypocrites that had crept among the true believers apparently in the following manner:

And some villagers around you are hypocrites and some of the dwellers of Madinah too, hypocrisy has become their habit. You know them not. We know them. We will soon torment them twice, then they will be returned to a great torment.

(Al-Taubah 9, Verse 101)

Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – narrated that on Jumu’ah while the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – was delivering the sermon in Masjid al-Nabawi shareef, he pointed out each munafiq by name and chased them out of the Masjid by saying:

Get up, O so and so, and get out!  For you are a hypocrite!

There were 36 hypocrites inside the Masjid at the time.  The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – only performed Jumu’ah Salah after chasing them all out of the Masjid.

The Revelation of Surah Munafiqun

In the 5th year of Hijrah, there was a serious argument which occurred between an Ansari and a Muhaajir. It was a minor issue but threatened to turn very ugly. Each person joined his own clan and it was very near that a full-scale war would break out.

However, there were a few eminent people from both sides who resolved the matter and this argument died down. At the same time, one cannot underestimate the evil role of the famous Munaafiq, Abdullah bin Abi Ubay, in this matter. Since he acted outwardly as a Muslim, it was difficult to point a finger at him or to attack him openly.  When he came to hear about the incident, he insulted some of the people in Madina Shareef and said that it was because of their welcoming the Muhaajir matters had reached this point.

Abdullah bin Abi Ubay mentioned that if these people divorce themselves from the Muhaajir, they would be forced to return to Mecca.  He also made a statement which was to haunt him later.  Abdullah bin Abi Ubay mentioned that, “If my Lord wishes, when we arrive in Madina, the people of respect will remove the lowly people from Madina.” (In other words, he considered himself and his supporters as high-class people while the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and his supporters as low class people, Ma’azzallah)

At that time Hadrat Sayyiduna Zaid bin Arqam – may Allah be pleased with him, who still a young boy, was present when this Munaafiq was making this statement.  He could not restrain and shouted at this person, “I swear by Allah that you are a disgrace and lowly person.  No one supports you while the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – is supported and loved by everyone.  He has given respect by His Creator and is fully supported by the Muslims.”

When Abdullah ibn Ubay heard the words of this young man, he laughed and said that he was only joking.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Zaid – may Allah be pleased with him – appeared in front of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and revealed what this Munaafiq had said.  When Hadrat ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – heard these words and he was also in this meeting, he asked permission to kill this person.  However, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – displayed caution and refrained him.

When Abdullah ibn Ubay heard what had happened, he came to the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and swore that he had never said these words.  Some of the Ansaar also mentioned that this person was one of the leaders in the community and perhaps the young man had heard differently or perhaps he had misunderstood the words which were said.   The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – accepted the version of Abdullah ibn Ubay and remained silent.

When Hadrat Sayyiduna Zaid – may Allah be pleased with him – heard that his version was not accepted, out of embarrassment, he remained indoors.  He also did not want to be insulted by others in front of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.  Nevertheless, finally, Surah Munifiqun was revealed in which Hadrat Sayyiduna Zaid – may Allah be pleased with him – was proven correct and truthful while Abdullah bin Ubay was proven as a liar.  When this happened, the status and stature of the young man was instantly raised in the eyes of the Muslims and they displayed immense respect and love for him.  At the same time, the true evil of Abdullah ibn Ubay was also revealed.

It is also mentioned that when this person arrived near Madina Shareef, he was refused entry into the blessed city by his own son whose name was also Abdullah. His son stood outside the city limits with a sword in his hand waiting for his father.  When he appeared in front of his son, his son informed him, “I will not allow you to enter Madina Shareef until and unless you do not admit that you are a disgrace and the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – is most noble and respected.”

Only when he publicly mentioned these words, did his sons allow him to enter Madina Shareef.

In another report, it is mentioned that when Surah Munifiqun was revealed, he called Hadrat Sayyiduna Zaid – may Allah be pleased with him – to him and he rubbed his ears with this blessed hands and said smilingly, “Your ears were indeed true and the Allah Almighty has also testified to your truth.”

In fact, these were those blessed people who did not even show respect to their own family when it came to the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. This is unlike the people of today, who will sit and eat with Munaafiqs and consider it their greatest Me’raj.

Hadrat ‘Umar beheads a Munafiq

Thalabi reports from Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas – May Allah be pleased with them – who explains the reason for the Revelation of the verse in Surah Nisaa, (verse 60):

“Did you not see those whose claim is that they believe in what has been sent down on you and what was sent down before you, and they then wish to make the devil their judge, whereas they were ordered to completely reject him? And the devil wishes to mislead them far astray.”

That there was once a Jew and a Munafiq named Bashar and there was a dispute among them.  The Jew mentioned that they should take this dispute to the Holy Prophet – May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.  However, the Munafiq (Bashar) replied that instead of doing this, they should take their dispute to Ka’ab bin Ashraf (in case the Jew did not agree with the decision of the Holy Prophet – May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him).

However, finally they took their dispute to the Holy Prophet – May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.  After listening to the dispute, the Holy Prophet – May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – gave the decision in favour of the Jew.

Obviously, Bashar was not happy with this and mentioned that they should take this dispute to Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – May Allah be pleased with him.  When this was presented in front of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – May Allah be pleased with him, the Jew also mentioned that the decision was already made in his favour by the Holy Prophet – May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – initially. Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – May Allah be pleased with him – then asked the Munafiq whether this was true what the Jew had mentioned.  He replied that yes, the Jew was correct in what he was saying.

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – May Allah be pleased with him – then told them both to wait for him.  A few minutes later, he walked into the room with a sword.  As he entered the room, without saying a word, he beheaded the Munafiq. He mentioned that whoever is not happy with the decision of Allah Almighty and His Prophet – May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, this decision was the correct decision for them.

Young Boy exposes a Munafiq

One day the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – was sitting in the Masjid educating the Ashaab about Islam and purifying their inner being.  There was a young child and his uncle who were also present.  This small boy had in fact accompanied his uncle into the Masjid.  He was only eight years old.  However, his uncle, whose name was Julaas bin Suwaid, was a confirmed Munafiq and he tried to hide his real feelings from the Muslims around him.  Such was the behaviour of these Munafiqs that they joined the Muslims in the five daily Salaah, and fasted with the other Muslims as well.  They also went for Umrah with other Muslims but in their private gatherings, they completely belied the message of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him –.

The nephew of this Munafiq that approached his uncle and said, “O my uncle, when I heard the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – describing the events on the Day of Judgement, it was if I was actually looking at Qiyamah unfolding in front of me.”

When his uncle heard this comment, in a fit of jealousy and arrogance he replied, “My child! If Muhammad is true, then we are even worse than donkeys (Ma’azzalah).”

When the little boy heard this statement, the colour of his face changed and his body became frigid with anger.  It was like someone had stabbed him. I n a fit of anger he declared, “O my uncle! There is no doubt that you used to be the most beloved to me, however, right now, there is no one more despicable in my eyes than you.  My uncle! There are now only two options open to me.  Either I hide from the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – what you have just said and become guilty of someone who had deceived the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – or, I reveal the words of disrespect which you have mentioned and whatever happens will happen.”

When Julaas bim Suwaid heard these comments from his young nephew, he bravely replied, “You are only a young boy. People will never believe you. Therefore, if you want, you can go and say whatever you want to say.”

The young boy then bravely approached the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and sat in front of him.

He then bravely declared, “O Prophet of Allah! This person, Julaas bin Suwaid who is my uncle, has become guilty of being deceitful to Allah Almighty and His Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. Therefore, from the beginning, I would like to announce in the Divine Court of the Allah Almighty and the court of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – that I am completely innocent of this.”

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – asked, “What did he actually say?”

The little boy declared, “He had mentioned the words that, ‘I swear by Allah Almighty that if Muhammad is true, then we have gone beyond the donkeys (in stupidity).’”

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then gathered the blessed Ashaab and discussed this issue with them.  Some of them mentioned, “O Prophet of Allah! This is still a young child.  Please do not accept his words. In fact, he does not even understand what he is saying.  Julaas bin Suwaid is an elderly person, very intelligent and he also performs the Salaah with us.”

When the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – heard the comments of the blessed Ashaab, he remained silent and did not utter a word. When the little boy realised what was happening, he began to weep.  He was also extremely disappointed, and his little body also began to tremble.  He then looked towards the sky calling out to the Divine Creator in the following manner, “O my Creator! If I am truthful in what I have said, then please prove me correct and if I have spoken a lie, then prove me a liar.”

Even before the little boy could rise from the gathering, Jibra’eel Ameen appeared from above the seven heavens and came to substantiate the words of the little boy.  His words are echoed in the 74th verse of Surah Taubah which is:

“And they swear by Allah Almighty that they did not say it; whereas indeed they had certainly uttered the words of disbelief, and after having entered Islam turned disbelievers and had wished for what they did not get; and what annoyed them except that Allah Almighty, and His Noble Messenger, made them prosperous with His grace? So if they repent, it is better for them; and if they turn away, Allah will afflict them with a painful punishment – in this world and the Hereafter; and they will have neither a protector nor any supporter in the entire earth.”

When the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – called Julaas bin Suwaid to inquire from him about his Kufr, he began to make all types of funny excuses.  He also swore that he had never said anything against the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him-.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then recited the verse in Surah Taubah and made it clear to him that he had indeed committed Kufr and that he should make Taubah.

After this, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – called the little boy and when he appeared in front of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – declared, “Welcome to that blessed child whose testimony has been established by the Divine Creator even beyond the seven heavens.”

(Tafseer Durre Mansur, 3/463/464)

Muslims should be aware that the blessed child in this incident is none other than the blessed companion, Hadrat Sayyiduna Umair bin Sa’ad bin Ubaid bin Numan Ansari – may Allah be pleased with him-. It is mentioned that when this verse was revealed, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – held the ears of this little boy and declared, “O child! Your ears have certainly heard these words and your Creator has also testified to this.” (Al Isti’aab)

This is also the same blessed companion who was made the Governor of Hums by Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him.  He also settled in Syria and passed away there as well.

In other words, he was considered as being among the eminent companions of his era.  In fact, such was his honesty and dedication to the truth that when he passed away, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – declared, “If only there were more people like Umair who could be placed in charge of Muslim affairs and governance.”

Du’a for a Munafiq and a Faasiq

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with them – mentions that when the famous Munafiq, Abdullah ibn Ubay, died his son approached Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and said to him, “Please give me your kurta so that I can wrap him with it and please also perform the Janazah and make Du’a for his pardon.”

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then handed his kurtah to this person and informed him that when the time for the Janazah is ready, he should be called.  When the time arrived, this person approached Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.  However, when he was about to commence the Janazah Salaah, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – held Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – from the back and said, “Has the Allah Almighty not prohibited us from reading the Janazah of the Munafiq?” Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied, “I have been given both choices.”

In Surah Taubah, verse 84, the Holy Qur’an declares:

“And never offer funeral prayers for any of them who dies, nor stand by his grave; indeed, they disbelieved in Allah and His Noble Messenger, and they died as sinners.”

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – also added, “Whether I make Du’a for these people or do not make Du’a for them, it is equal.  If I make Du’a seventy times for them, still Allah Almighty will never ever pardon them.”
