Allah Almighty states in the Holy Quran:

‘O believers! be patient, and excel in patience with the enemies.

(Aale ‘Imran 3, Verse 200)

Hadeeth:

Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ood – may Allah be pleased with him – reported: The Messenger of Allah – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – said:

You will see after me favouritism and things which you will disapprove of.

They submitted: What do you order us to do (under such circumstances)?

He replied:  Discharge your obligations and ask your rights from Allah.

(Bukhari, Muslim)

Sayyiduna Abu Yahya Usaid ibn Hudhair – may Allah be pleased with him – reported that:

A person from among the Ansar said, “O Messenger of Allah, you appointed such and such person and why do you not appoint me (to collect taxes)?”

The Messenger of Allah – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – said, “You will see others given preference to you after me, but you should remain patient till you meet me at the Haudh (Al-Kauthar in Jannah)”.

(Bukhari, Muslim)

Commentary:

Imam Nawawi – may Allah be pleased with him – writes under the commentary of this Hadeeth as follows:

We have been instructed to listen to the ruler and obey him even though he may be an oppressor, his right is to be fulfilled and no one should go against him.

The subject should make Du’a in the court of Allah Almighty for the end of his injustice and mischief, and for him to reform.

(Sharh Muslim Vol. 6, p. 232(

Haudh al-Kauthar as mentioned in Quran and Hadeeth:

Allah Almighty states the following regarding this blessed Haudh which has been bestowed upon the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – and it will be the place where we, who love and revere him, will meet him on the Day of Judgment in sha Allah:

‘O beloved! Undoubtedly, We have bestowed upon you abundance of good.

(Al-Kauthar 108, Verse 1)

It means the river in paradise:

Sayyiduna Anas – may Allah be pleased with him – reported from the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – to have said, “I saw a river in paradise.  There were domes around it which were made of beautiful pearls.  When I put my hand in the water, it was more fragrant than the musk.  When I asked, ‘What is this?’  I was told, ‘It is Al-Kauthar which Allah Almighty has granted you’.”

In another narration from Sayyiduna Anas – may Allah be pleased with him – it is reported:

Its water is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey.  There are green birds in it whose necks are like that of the camels of Bukht.  One who eats one of those birds and drinks from that water, will earn the pleasure of Allah.

It is named Al-Kauthar due to the following reasons:

  1. This river ranks first amongst the rivers and streams of paradise in the volume of its water and virtues.
  2. Other streams of paradise branch from it, as it is narrated that none of the streams of paradise are such where the water of Al-Kauthar does not flow.
  3. There will be a lot of people who will drink from it.

It has numerous virtues, as the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – has stated, “My Lord has promised me about the river that has abundance of good.”

It is a pool.  There are numerous famous narrations in this regard.  It can be related with the former interpretation that either the river flows into this pool or the river originates from this pool.

(Tafsir al-Kabeer (Mafateeh al-Ghaib) of Imam Fakhruddin Muhammad ibn Umar al-Raazi al-Shafe’i  D. 606 A.H.)

There will be four Caliphs – may Allah be pleased with them – on all four corners of it, and whoever has malice for any one of them, the other will not quench their thirst.

(Tafsir Qurtubi (Al-Jame’ Li Ahkaam al-Quran) Imam Shamsuddin Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Qurtubi  D. 671 A.H.)

It is mentioned in Hadeeth that my pool stretches from San’a (in Yemen) to Elah (Bait al-Maqdis or Jerusalem).  At all its corners, Abu Bakr will be on the first, ‘Umar on the second, ‘Uthman on the third and ‘Ali on the fourth – may Allah be pleased with them.  Whoever has malice for any one of them, the other will not allow them to drink from it.

(Tafsir Rooh al-Bayaan of Imam Isma’eel Haqqi ibn Mustafa al-Istanbuli Hanafi t D. 1127 A.H.)

Lesson:

  • Demand for an office is not a pleasant quality. It is, therefore, prohibited to give office to a person who demands it. It is, however, permissible only in case a person feels that he is more competent than others and there is no one else in view who is more intelligent, capable and pious.
  • The prophecy of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – came true, which is a miracle as well as an evidence of his Ilme Ghayb bestowed by Allah Almighty.
  • The Haudh mentioned here is Haudh Al-Kauthar which is granted to the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – where people will be assembled on the Day of Resurrection.
