Allah Almighty states in the Holy Quran:

And We shall definitely put you to test with something of fear and hunger and with some loss of wealth and lives and fruits; and give glad tidings to the patient.

 (Al-Baqarah 2, Verse 155)

Hadeeth:

Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ood – may Allah be pleased with him – reported: I visited the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – when he was suffering from fever. I said, “You seem to be suffering greatly, O Messenger of Allah.” The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – replied, “Yes, I suffer as much as two persons.” I said, “Is that because you have a double reward?” He replied that it was as such, and then said, “No Muslim is afflicted by a harm, be it the pricking of a thorn or something more (painful than that), but Allah thereby causes his sins to fall away just as a tree sheds its leaves”.

(Bukhari, Muslim)

Commentary:

Mufti Ahmed Yaar Khan Na’eemi – may Allah be pleased with him – comments on this Hadeeth as follows:

It should be noted that fever is an ailment which the Prophets – peace be upon him – used to have.  Our Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – passed away in the state of fever.

Do Not Curse Fever, for it Eliminates the Sins

Sayyiduna Jabir ibn Abdullah – may Allah be pleased with him – reported that Allah’s Messenger – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – visited Sayyidah Umm Sa’ib or Umm Musayyab and said:  Umm Sa’ib or Umm Musayyib, why is it that you are shivering?  She said:” It is fever and may it not be blessed by Allah, whereupon he the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – said: Don’t curse fever for it expiates the sin of the children of Adam just as furnace removes the rust of iron.

Du’a for Fever – A Marvelous Story

Sayyiduna Ubai ibn Ka’b – may Allah be pleased with him – narrated:

I asked in the court of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him, “Ya RasoolAllah, what is fever?”  He replied, “For as long as the pain remains in the legs of the one suffering from fever and his vein keeps on beating, his virtues are recorded on each beat.”  Hearing this, Sayyiduna Ubai ibn Ka’b – may Allah be pleased with him – made the following Du’a to Allah:

O Allah, I beg you for fever which does not become an obstacle from fighting in Your path or visiting Your House and visiting the Masjid of Your Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him.

He was then stricken with fever every evening ever since.

(Al-Targheeb wal Tarheeb Hadeeth No. 82)

Mountain of Sins Forgiven

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – has stated:

When a man or a woman constantly suffers from fever then even if his or her sins are as mountainous as the mount Uhad, as soon as the disease is cured from him or her, there remain no sin even to the amount of a mustard seed.

(Al-Targheeb wal Tarheeb Hadeeth No. 67)

Lesson:

  • Fever is a blessing, for the Prophets of Allah – peace be upon them – had fever and it elevated their ranks even more.
  • The sin of a Muslim sheds due to any calamity one suffers; such as fever.
  • One becomes dearer and closer to Allah Almighty through patience when tested with calamities and diseases.
