And by (oath of) the One Who created the male and the female.
Tafsir al-Qurtubi
There are two views pertaining to the creation of “male and female” in the verse:
- It signifies Sayyiduna Adam – peace be upon him – and Sayyidah Hawwa – may Allah be pleased with her, according to Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas, Sayyiduna Hasan and Sayyiduna Kalbi – may Allah be pleased with them.
- It means the entire male and female race; the humans thereof and the animal species, for Allah Almighty created all of them from a male and a female of their own species.
