As he considers himself independent!

Tafsir al-Tabari

For the man exceeds his limits and considers himself great against his Lord and ends up disbelieving in Him due to considering himself as self-sufficient.

Tafsir Al-Tabari (Tafsir Ibn Jareer / Jame’ al-Bayaan fi Taweel al-Quraan) of Imam Abu Ja’far Muhammad ibn Jareer al-Tabri t D. 310 A.H.

Tafsir al-Kabeer

When someone becomes wealthy it should only increase in his humility; such as the example Sayyiduna Sulaiman – peace be upon him; for when he sat in the gathering of the poor he would say, “The poor is sitting with the poor.”

Sayyiduna ‘Abdur Rahman ibn ‘Auf – may Allah be pleased with him – did not become arrogant despite having abundance of wealth.

A wise person rather knows that he needs Allah Almighty more in the state of riches rather than he did in the state of poverty, for when he was in poverty he only had to consider the safety of his life but in the state of riches, he now has to pray for the safety of his life, wealth and belongings as well.

Tafsir al-Kabeer (Mafateeh al-Ghaib) of Imam Fakhruddin Muhammad ibn Umar al-Raazi al-Shafe’i t D. 606 A.H.

Tafsir al-Jalalain

When he sees it i.e. his own soul, to be self-sufficient, in terms of wealth — this was revealed regarding Abu jahl.

Tafsir al-Jalalain of Imam Jalaaluddin Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Mahalli al-Shafe’i t D. 864 A.H. and Imam Jalaaluddin Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr al-Suyooti al-Shafe’i t D. 911 A.H.

Tafsir Rooh al-Bayaan

It is reported that once abu jahl said to the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him, “Do you perceive that whoever has wealth can dominate?  (If that is the case) then turn the mountains of Makkah into gold and silver for us, so we can abandon our religion and follow yours.”

Sayyiduna Jibreel – peace be upon him – descended and said, “If you wish we can make it happen but if they do not bring Iman then we will do to them what we had done to the people of Al-Ma’idah.”

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – then withdrew from making this Du’a, showing his merciful nature so that they may survive.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – used to utter in his supplications, “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the wealth that makes one arrogant and from poverty that makes one oblivious of You.”

In it, there is an indication that when a human being observes some of the radiance of the Divine Being and Attributes of Allah within himself, he claims it for himself and thinks that the radiance of the Divine Being and Attributes of Allah that he has been bestowed upon him in the Ultimate Wisdom of Allah is his own belonging and he is its master and then he becomes independent of its True Master who bestowed it upon him, so he can boast about it against his own Creator.

Tafsir Rooh al-Bayaan of Imam Isma’eel Haqqi ibn Mustafa al-Istanbuli Hanafi t D. 1127 A.H.
