i.e. the witches who blow into the knots of the string at the time when they do witchcraft on it.

Sayyiduna Abu ‘Ubaidah – may Allah be pleased with him – said, “These witches were the daughters of Labeed ibn A’sam who bewitched the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – therefore, Allah Almighty commanded His Messenger – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – to seek refuge from their evil.

Tafsir al-Qurtubi

i.e. the witches who blow into the knots of the string when they do witchcraft on it.

There is a difference of opinion concerning blowing during spiritual healing, a group of scholars has prohibited it while others have validated it.

Some have narrated, “I paid Dhahhaak a visit when he was in a lot of pain, so I said, ‘Should I not read for you, O Muhammad?’  He replied, ‘Sure, but do not blow.’  So, I read the Mu’awwidhatain for him.”

Imam Muhammad ibn Sireen was asked about blowing into a Ta’weedh, so he replied, “I do not see any harm in it.  Sunnah is the yardstick in matters where the scholars differ in their opinions.”

Sayyidah Ayesha – may Allah be pleased with her – narrated that the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – used to blow into Ta’weedh.  The Imams have narrated it.

Sayyiduna Muhammad ibn Hatib – may Allah be pleased with him – narrated that his hand got burnt, so his mother brought him to the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him.  He kept blowing onto it while he kept on reading some sentences.  He (the Sahabi) could not remember it.

Sayyiduna Muhammad ibn al-Ash’ath said, “I was brought to Sayyidah Ayesha – may Allah be pleased with her – when I had some problem in my eyes.  She read and blew into my eyes.”

This spiritual healing by blowing is to treat the bodily ailments, so if there is benefit in something, it will not be judged as same as the things where harm is intended.

Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – said, “I got sick, so the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – came to me while I was saying, ‘O Allah, if it is the time of my death then relieve me and if it is delayed then grant me cure and relieve me, and if it is a test then grant me the patience.’  The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – said, ‘How did you say that?’  I repeated it for him, so he rubbed his hand over me and said, ‘O Allah, grant him cure.’  I never encountered that pain ever again.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn al-Qasim, the slave of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddeq – may Allah be pleased with them that it was a woman who bewitched the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – on 11 knots, so Allah Almighty revealed Mu’awwidhatain; 11 verses of it.

Sayyiduna Ibn Zaid – may Allah be pleased with him – said, “They were jewish women i.e. those witches that are mentioned.”

It is also said that They were the daughters of Labeed ibn al-A’sam.

Al-Naffathat are the witches or spirits or the group of women who tie knots on the string and blow on them and do witchcraft.  Al-Nafath means “to blow (onto something) with the mixing of saliva”.  It is the proof to refute the Motazilites view of rejecting witchcraft and its effects.

Sayyiduna Ibn Mardawaih narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah – may Allah be pleased with them – that the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – said, “One who ties knots and blows into them has indeed committed witchcraft, and the one who performs witchcraft has indeed committed polytheism.”

It is permissible to do spiritual healing with Allah’s and His Messenger’s Speech but not with Hebrew, Syriac or Hindi spells (if one does not know their meanings), for is it not allowed to believe in such things.
