لَاۤ اُقْسِمُ بِہٰذَا الْبَلَدِ ۙ﴿۱﴾

I swear by this City;
وَ اَنۡتَ حِلٌّۢ بِہٰذَا الْبَلَدِ ۙ﴿۲﴾

And O beloved! you are dwelling in this city;

(Al-Balad 90, Verse 1-2)

Allah Almighty has taken oath of the blessed city of Makkah which endorses the greatness and excellence of this city.  Is it because the Holy Ka’bah is situated there or is it that the black stone and Maqaam al Ibrahimi are there? Nay, it is due to something which has revealed in His own words as follows:

وَ اَنۡتَ حِلٌّۢ بِہٰذَا الْبَلَدِ ۙ﴿۲﴾

And O beloved! you are dwelling in this city;

The reason that He has taken the oath of the city of Makkah Mukarramah is because it has accommodated the blessed personality of the beloved Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him.

This holy city is also known by other names; such as, Ummul Qura, Saayyid al-Bilaad and Al-Balad al-Ameen.  Allah Almighty has loved this region so much that He made it the attraction of the entire world and chose this region for His house the Holy Ka’bah:

اِنَّ اَوَّلَ بَیۡتٍ وُّضِعَ لِلنَّاسِ لَلَّذِیْ بِبَکَّۃَ مُبَارَکًا وَّہُدًی لِّلْعٰلَمِیۡنَ﴿ۚ۹۶﴾

There are verious narrations in regards to the construction of the Holy Ka’bah.  According to one narration:

  • The angels constructed the Holy Ka’bah by the Command of Allah Almighty.
  • Sayyiiduna Adam – peace be upon him – descended from the heaven on the earth he traveled to Makkah Mukarramah with Sayyiduna Jibreel – peace be pon him – and constructed the Holy Ka’bah.

After the flood of Sayyiduna Nooh – peace be upon him – all that remained was a bump which a slightly red in colour.

Hazrat Abdullah ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – reported that at the time of the flood, Allah Almighty turned the ark of Sayyiduna Nooh – peace be upon him, which consisted of 80 persons, towards the direction of Makkah Mukarramah, and it made the Tawaaf of the Holy Ka’bah day and night.

Sayyiduna Ibrahim – peace be upon him – reconstructed the Holy Ka’bah 400 years after the flood of Sayyiduna Nooh – peace be upon him – by the Command of Allah Almighty.  When he and his son Sayyiduna Ismail – peace be upon him – started to dig for the initial construction its original foundation was discovered.  The angels gathered stones from five mountains to be used in the construction:

  1. Mount Toor Sena

‘O Our Lord, and send in them a messenger from among themselves, who may recite to them Your signs and teach them Your Book and wise knowledge and may purify them well. Surely, You are alone the Predominant, the Wise.
