Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that:

Once, in the middle of the day, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – left his house and walked to the Masjid. When Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – saw this, he asked him the reason for this. Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I left the house because of extreme hunger.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I swear by Allah that I have also left my house because of this reason.”

As they were talking, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him –also left his house and appeared in front of them. He also asked them the reason for this and they replied, “O Prophet of Allah! We swear by Allah that besides hunger nothing else has made us do this.”

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then declared, “I swear by that Divine Being in Whose Power is my life, I have also left my house because of hunger.”

He then commanded them to join him and they walked towards the house of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Ayub Al Ansari – may Allah be pleased with him.

When the wife of the blessed companion saw them, she declared, “Welcome to the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and his blessed companions.”

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – asked, “Where is Abu Ayub?”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Ayub Al Ansari – may Allah be pleased with him – heard their blessed voices and appeared from his garden. He said, “Welcome to the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and his blessed companions. O Master! This is not a normal time for your appearance.”

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied, “You have spoken the truth.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Ayub Al Ansari – may Allah be pleased with him – then went to his garden and brought back various types of dates and presented it to them.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – asked him what these dates were and he replied that he wanted the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – to eat the various types of dates. He said that he will go and slaughter a goat. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – advised him not to slaughter a goat which was giving milk.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Ayub Al Ansari – may Allah be pleased with him – then slaughtered a goat which was one year old and he asked his wife to make some bread. He cooked half the carcass and half he had roasted. Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Ayub Al Ansari – may Allah be pleased with him – then presented this food in front of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him –t hen placed some meat on some bread and told him, “O Abu Ayub! Go and give this to Fatimah. She has not eaten food like this for a long time.” This was done and everyone consumed as much as they could.

After this, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – spoke about the meat, the bread and the various types of dates and his blessed eyes filled with tears and he declared, “I swear by that Divine Being in Whose Power is my life, on the Day of Judgement you will certainly be questioned about these blessings and good fortune.” (Tabarani, Ibn Habban, Hayyat As Sahaabah)

If this is the state of the most noble and the greatest of creation, imagine the state of ordinary people and creation. People today do not even think about what they spend and what they have. Everything is taken for granted. They think that everything belongs to their father and therefore, they should spend as they wish. But on the Day of Judgement you will be taught a lesson that you never anticipated.
