Hadrat Sayyiduna Aswad bin Yazeed Nakh’I’s – may Allah be pleased with him – title is Abu Amar or Abu Abdur Rahman. He is the maternal uncle of one of the teachers of the Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam Abu Hanifah – may Allah be pleased with him, namely Hadrat Sayyiduna Ebrahim Nakh’i – may Allah be pleased with him. He was born during the time of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – but did not meet Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.
He was considered a very eminent Taaba’e and was also a student of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar and Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdulla ibn Mas’ud – may Allah be pleased with him.
Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam Ahmed bin Hambal – may Allah be pleased with him – has also referred to him as “khayr or noble”.
Imam Yahya bin Mo’een and Ibn Sa’ad – may Allah be pleased with them – have also referred to him as being among the very pious Muhaditheen.
Imam Ebrahim Nakh’i – may Allah be pleased with him – also mentions that he was among those students of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud – may Allah be pleased with him – who was also allowed to issue Fatawah.
He was also very diligent in daily Ibadah and besides keeping regular fast, he used to perform nearly seven hundred rak’ah of Nafil Salaah daily. Due to his immense Ibadah, his complexion also changed and became pale. He was originally from Kufah. He also performed forty Hajj and Umrah. When Imam Husain – may Allah be pleased with him – was martyred through the evil scheming of the people in Kufah, he left this city in disgust never to return.
He lived until the age of one hundred and twenty. He was also considered an eminent Saint and performed many miracles. He was buried in Basrah. (Akmaal, Imam Nawawi)
