Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that there was a special place allocated for Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – next to the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – never used to arise from that spot except when he saw the blessed uncle of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – appear. This was a form of behaviour which was well liked by the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.

One day, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – appeared and Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – moved from his spot. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – asked him why he had not moved away from his spot. He replied that the blessed uncle of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – had appeared. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then looked at his uncle and then at the blessed companion and smiled. He said, “This is Abbas and he is wearing white clothing and after him, his son will be wearing black clothing and will be the owner of twelve black slaves.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Jafer – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates through the Sanad of his grandfather that when the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – used to sit, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – used to sit on his right, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – used to sit on his left and Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman – may Allah be pleased with him – sat in front.

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman – may Allah be pleased with him – was also the one who recorded the private and secretive messages of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. When Hadrat Sayyiduna Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – used to come, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – used to move from his spot and Hadrat Sayyiduna Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – used to sit there.

Sayyidah Ayesha – may Allah be pleased with her – mentions that when the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – used to sit, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – and Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – used to sit on his side. When they used to see Hadrat Sayyiduna Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – approaching, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – used to make a place for him.

He then used to sit in between the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him –and Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – used to then say to Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him, “Only the people of excellence understand the people of excellence.”

From this, we come to understand that it is necessary upon the Muslims to display respect for the blessed Ashaab, the Ahle Bait, the pious and the ‘Ulama of the Ummah. (Tabarani, ibn Asaakir, Hayaat As Sahaabah)
