Sayyidah Umme Habeebah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates:

When we migrated to Abyssinia, my previous husband became a heretic (in other words, he became a Christian). A few days later, I noticed someone calling me by the title of “Ummul Mo’mineen”. When I heard this, I was stunned and realised that very soon, I will become the wife of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.

After my iddat had become complete, a few days later, I received news through a female servant of Najjasi who asked me permission to enter. After she entered my room, she informed me, “The King of Abyssinia mentioned that he had been informed by the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – that he should perform your marriage with the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him”.

I was then told to send a person from among the Muslims as my Wakeel so that this marriage could be completed. She then sent someone to call Hadrat Sayyiduna Khalid bin Saeed – may Allah be pleased with him – so that he could be her Wakeel. In a display of happiness, she also handed the female servant some bangles and other jewellery as a sign of her joy and appreciation.

In the evening, Najjasi then called Hadrat Sayyiduna Jafer bin Abi Talib – may Allah be pleased with him – and the other Muslims and recited the following Khutba of the marriage.

He declared, “All Praise is due to Allah, Who is the Owner of all the universe. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah and Muhammad is His true Messenger. He is the same Prophet who was foretold by Nabi ‘Isa – peace be upon him. Whatever the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has invited towards, I have accepted that message and I hereby perform the marriage of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – to Sayyidah Umme Habeebah. May Allah increase the Barakah in this.”

Thereafter, Najaasi handed over the amount of four hundred Dinaars on behalf of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – to Hadrat Sayyiduna Khalid bin Saeed – may Allah be pleased with him – who was her Wakeel.

The Muslims then decided to leave, however Najaasi reminded them that they should sit and partake of food as this was a Sunnah of the Prophets that they fed people after a marriage.

The blessed Mother of the Believers then explains, “When this money came to me, I wanted to again hand this over to this female servant. However, she mentioned that the King had given strict instructions that nothing should be taken from her. She also returned the previous gifts which I had given her and she also informed me that she had also accepted the religion of Islam. After that, various females from the city also approached me and gave me presents. The female servant also mentioned that when I meet the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – I was also to convey her Salaam to him and inform him that she had also accepted Islam. When I finally departed from that city, this female continued to remind me not to forget her.”

When I finally arrived in front of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – I mentioned to me about the marriage and about the female servant. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – smiled and also conveyed his Salaam to her as well.” (Hakim)
