Hadrat Sayyiduna Abul Aaliyah’s – may Allah be pleased with him – full name is Rafee bin Mehran. He was a slave who had been freed. He was considered a very eminent Taaba’e. He was also blessed with meeting Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Ubay bin Ka’ab – may Allah be pleased with them – etc. He was also a student of these blessed Ashaab in the faculty of Ahadith. On three occasions, he was blessed with completing the Qur’an in front of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him.

Hundreds of Muhaddith were blessed by being taught by him and his students are such that they themselves were great Imams of Ahadith in their era.

He  loved seclusion and privacy and was unmatched in Ibadah and spiritual penitence. In Salaah, he was a symbol of humility and deep concentration. He used to also mention that if a person cannot attain sincerity, humility and deep concentration in Salaah, where else will he be able to find these qualities. In fact, his immense love and concentration in Salaah was something which people considered a miracle in itself. He never missed the Tahajjud Salaah even when he was travelling. He used to say that in his opinion one of the greatest sins for a Muslim is if he has knowledge of Shari’ah, is a Haafiz and sleeps during the Tahajjud and does not recite the Holy Qur’an.

One symbol of his piety is that he once heard a Hadith about prohibiting a person from touching his private area with his right and from that day till he passed away, he was never guilty of touching his private area with this right hand. He passed away in 90 A.H. (Tabqaat, Imam She’rani)
