Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – mentions that during the time of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – there was a person whose name was Abdullah but people used to call him “Himaar” (donkey). He used to make the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – smile. However, he consumed alcohol and due to this, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – had also once commanded that he be whipped.

One day, when he was brought forward, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – gave the usual command but someone among the Muslims cursed this person saying, “O Allah curse this person. How many times has he been brought forward, (in other words, he is punished but still he does not refrain from this bad habit).”

When the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – heard this comment, he declared, “Do not curse him, I swear by Allah that he is someone who loves Allah and His Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.”

In another report it is mentioned that there was a person whose title was “Himaar”. He used to be bring honey and ghee for the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – as a gift. However, whenever the person from whom he used to purchase these items ask for his money, this same Himaar used to appear in front of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and ask for payment.

When he behaved in this manner, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – used to smile and used to order someone to pay the person. One day, this same person was brought in the blessed court of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – because he had been found guilty of drinking alcohol. A person sitting there then mentioned that Allah Almighty should curse this person. However, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied, “Do not say something like this. This is someone who loves Allah and His Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.” (Sahih Bukhari Shareef, Ibn Jareer, Bahiqi, etc)
