Download PDF: [S] He was Martyred by his Community
Once, Hadrat Sayyiduna Urwah bin Mas’ud Saqafi – may Allah be pleased with him – requested permission from the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – to go and spread Islam in his community. However, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – displayed reservation that maybe they might kill him. However, he assured the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – that they were people who were extremely concerned about him and they were people who did not even want any harm to come to him even when he slept. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then gave him permission to leave.
When Hadrat Sayyiduna Urwah bin Mas’ud Saqafi – may Allah be pleased with him – reached his community and saw the idols Laat and Uzza, he began to insult these idols. Obviously, his community was upset by his behavior. He told them that they should stop wasting their time calling to these idols who had no power to help anyone. He mentioned that all goodness was only in Islam.
As he was saying these words, someone in his community fired an arrow at him and through this he was martyred. When news of his martyrdom reached the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – he mentioned that this was like that person who is mentioned in Surah Yaseen in which the person had declared that if only his community could see his salvation and success (they would have refrained from this type of action).” (Tafseer ibn Katheer, Mustadrak)
In “Tafseer ibn Katheer”, there is a report of a believer who was so severely beaten that even his intestines extruded from his blessed body. At that moment, he was given glad tidings of Jannah and he was removed from the trials of the world and given peace in Jannah. Allah Almighty was extremely pleased with his martyrdom and he was blessed with entry into Jannah. When he saw the immense blessing which was in store for him in Jannah, he made Du’a that if only his people could see for themselves how his Creator had pardoned him.
This proves that a true believer never has any evil intention. Even in this state, he wishes that his community can see what is happening to him so that they can change their ways and also achieve the blessing of Jannah. We see that when they killed him, even at that moment, he was wishing for goodness for his community and even after he passed away, he was still wishing for goodness for his community.
