Hadrat Sayyiduna Zaid bin Aslam – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that once my father mentioned the following incident to me.

He narrates:

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – was sitting among the people when they noticed someone carrying his child on his shoulders. Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – then said, “The amount of similarity I see in these two, I have never see this type of similarity in any (father and son before).”

This person then came near and revealed his story. He said, “O Ameerul Mo’mineen! The story of this child is also very strange and wonderful. In fact, he was born after his mother had passed away.”

When Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – heard this reply, the great Muslim leader then asked him to reveal what exactly happened.

He said, “O Ameerul Mo’mineen! Once I decided to go on Jihad and my wife was pregnant. However, before I could leave, I made a special Du’a which was, ‘O Allah! Whatever is in the womb of this wife of mine, I give to You to protect and safeguard, please protect this child.’ After making this Du’a, I then proceeded for Jihad. When I returned, I was told that my wife had passed away and obviously, I was very sad when I heard the news. One night, I said to one of my cousins to take me to the grave of my wife and we went to Jannatul Baqi. He pointed out the grave to me. When I saw the grave, I noticed that there seemed to be light (Nur) appearing from the grave.

“I asked my cousin about this strange light and he said to that every night, this light appears from the grave. He also had no idea what this light meant. When I saw this, I realised that I needed to open the grave to see what was happening inside the grave. I then asked for a pick and before I could dig the grave, the grave opened on its own. When I peered inside the grave, I was shocked to see a little child that was playing on the lap of his mother.

“When I climbed into the grave, a voice said to me, ‘The trust which you had left with Allah, it is being returned to you. Take your child and if you had placed your wife in this trust as well, she would have also been returned to you safely. I then carried the little child and I as came out of the grave, it closed on its own.’” (Uyunul Hikaayah. Kitaab Ad Du’a, Tabarani)
