Download PDF: Importance of following the righteous Ulama

There are four channels through which the message of Islam is propagated for the guidance of human race:

  1. The Holy Quran
  2. Learned Ulama
  3. AwliyaAllah
  4. Generally, each and every member of the Ummah

It is the responsibility of each and every one of us to spread the message of Islam to others.

We can take account of our own responsibilities towards calling people to Islam and to the extent we have succeeded in it so far.

Everyone has people under him and everyone will be held accountable about the people that were their responsibility on the Day of Judgment.

How far have we succeeded in teaching our wife, children, relatives about Islam?

Before anything else, take account of how close to Islam you yourself are!

As an Ummah and our responsibility towards Dawah, how far have we fulfilled it?

This Ummah is a means of guidance for mankind until the Day of Judgment:

کُنۡتُمْ خَیۡرَ اُمَّۃٍ اُخْرِجَتْ لِلنَّاسِ تَاۡمُرُوۡنَ بِالْمَعْرُوۡفِ وَتَنْہَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنۡکَرِ

You are the best among all those nations appeared unto mankind, you command to good, and forbid evil.

You are the best Ummah created for the people, striving to guide them towards righteousness and stopping them from every kind of evil.

As for the responsibilities of the learned Ulama; as the inheritors of the Prophets (peace be upon them).  They should ponder as to how many people have achieved guidance towards the path of Islam through him and how far have they fulfilled this responsibility.

Then the Awliya of this Ummah who have spread the Deen of Allah through their spirituality and will continue to do so till the Day of Judgment.

The Ulama and Awliya are the pillars of Islam, it is through them that Islam is to spread and reach the hearts and minds of people, and if they were to err then the entire structure will collapse.  It is a fact that both the Ulama and Awliya will continue to exist in this Ummah till the Last Day, whereas in the previous Ummahs, there was discontinuation of Ulama and Awliya at a certain point.

Sometimes, we are fooled by the ones who superficially claim to be Ulama and Awliya therefore we need to be careful and distinguish the genuine from the imitation.  Do we ever wonder why there are so many imitations?  The fact is, imitation is only done of something extremely valuable and in-demand as a result of which we see that gold is very valuable and thus people try to imitate but on the other hand, have we ever seen fake iron?

The genuine Ulama and Awliya are valuable assets of the Ummah hence we see fake molvies, and in the name of Sufis and Peers we find so many examples of imitation in this spiritual faculty as well.  No wise person can deny the existence of gold because of the overwhelming amount of imitation jewelry sold throughout the market but he will rather examine the jewelry whether it is really gold or just shining like gold on the surface.  No one can justify the blame on all the Ulama by the overwhelming number of sellouts out there and it is no excuse if he never came across a genuine Aalime Deen yet.  One needs to go out of his comfort zone and look for the genuine scholars of Islam and try to recognize them.  If you have been fooled by them then look at the bigger picture, in whose path you were striving?  Of course, in the path of Allah!  Hazrat Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – used to free the slaves.  When the slaves noticed that he lengthens his Salah so they also began to lengthen their Salah.  Hazrat Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – used to like this action of theirs and free them.  Someone alerted him about this and said, “Umar, they fool you by this because they know how beloved Salah is to you.”  He replied, “If that’s the case, I’m prepared to be fooled a hundred times.”

It just goes to show that all he cared about was the pleasure of Allah Almighty and that at least through him they gained motivation to perform Salah, and out of overwhelming happiness he would gladly free his slaves as a mark of celebration.  Such was the sincerity of Sayyiduna Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – for the propagation of Deen.

If we have the goal in mind and our search is true and sincere then surely Allah Ta’ala will guide us towards that genuine gem we have been searching for and after being fooled once or twice we will find our objective.

As a matter of fact, unfortunately there is a number of those sellouts who trade their Deen for a meager monetary gain.  May Allah save us from such sellouts! But on the other hand, there are also those righteous Ulama who gladly forsake monetary gain in order to propagate the truth.

Allah Almighty states in the Holy Quran:

اَلَاۤ اِنَّ اَوْلِیَآءَ اللہِ لَاخَوْفٌ عَلَیۡہِمْ وَلَا ہُمْ یَحْزَنُوۡنَ ﴿ۚۖ۶۲﴾

Listen carefully! No doubt, there is no fear nor any grief upon the friends of Allah

Here, Allah Almighty Himself is saying that there are those Awliya who fear for no one and then we get some people denying their very existence just because they never came across one it does not mean there aren’t any.  By no means the notion of “There are no WaliyAllah” is acceptable!

How is the Deen going to prosper if the lectures of Ulama are on sale and Naaths are recited for money?!  There is corruption in spirituality.  Why do we only remember the tranquility of Madinah Shareef and turn a blind eye on the stones of Taaif?  There is Badr, Uhad and Taaif in the way of Madinah Shareef and then we get to the doorstep of our beloved Nabi – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him.  We always look for shortcut and reach Madinah Shareef directly!

We look for easy way out.

Listen to this Hadeeth of Nasa’i Shareef:

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – stated:

“Near the Day of Judgment, there will be a person with fat belly sitting and dictating that ‘Halaal is only what Allah made Halaal and Haraam is what Allah made Haraam’.”

He – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – says, “He will be lying.  Like how I am given Quran, I have also been blessed with so many types of sciences, so what I declare as Halaal Allah will declare it Halaal and what I forbid Allah will declare it unlawful.”

We need to be careful who we take our Deen from.
