It is reported that once there was a female slave named Asma who lived in Basrah. She was very beautiful in appearance and she also had a very beautiful voice. Her master was also very wealthy.
One day, she was walking past the gathering of the distinguished Saint, Hadrat Sayyiduna Saleh Mirri Radi Allahu ‘Anhu. She heard him lecturing so she entered the ladies section and began to listen to the lecture. Hadrat Sayyiduna Saleh Mirri Radi Allahu ‘Anhu was explaining about the huge test which would befall people on the Day of Judgement and about the immense punishment that would befall people. When this female slave heard these words, it created an enormous effect in her heart. She began to weep and tremble and displayed immense discomfort.
When Hadrat Sayyiduna Saleh Mirri Radi Allahu ‘Anhu saw Asma’s reaction, he asked people who this person was and they told him that her name was Asma. He then directed his advice to her. After a few minutes she remarked, “O Saleh! Your words have certainly made an impact and listen that I have listened and obeyed and without doubt truth has arrived and falsehood disappeared.”
When she returned home, she met a male slave. She took his clothes and gave him her clothes and also told him not to reveal this secret. She then spent her night and day in Ibadah and continued to fast during the day. In this manner, she became very frail and thin and also lost her good appearance.
When she had reached this stage, she then approached her master and revealed her identity. When he saw this, he became very angry and ordered that she be whipped in public. When they tied her up, her master took the whip in his hand to lash her but before he could do so, his hands became paralysed and blood began to appear from his hands. Suddenly, he heard a voice saying, “O enemy of Allah azza wajal! Is this how you treat a friend of Allah azza wajal”. When he heard this, he was extremely fearful and embarrassed. He told Asma that he did not realise that she had attained such a lofty position and state. Thereafter, both of them began to live a pious life together and also spent all their wealth on the poor.
