Hadrat Sayyiduna Amar bin Utbah bin Farqad – may Allah be pleased with him – was an eminent Muhaddith in Kufah. He was also considered as a great Mujaahid and one of the most eminent scholars among the Taaba’een. In the field of Hadith, he was also a special student of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud – may Allah be pleased with him. Among his students were scholars such as Imam Aamir Shubah – may Allah be pleased with him, etc.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Amar bin Utbah bin Farqad – may Allah be pleased with him – was noted for his immense Ibadah and his amazing miracles. Ali bin Saleh mentions that when it was very hot, he used to help with tending for the camels and over his head there was always a small cloud that used to protect him. When Hadrat Sayyiduna Amar bin Utbah bin Farqad – may Allah be pleased with him – used to perform Ibadah in the wild, the wild animals used to surround him and not only wag their tails in a friendly gesture, but they used to also protect him.

Imam ‘Amash – may Allah be pleased with him – mentions that Hadrat Sayyiduna Amar bin Utbah – may Allah be pleased with him – used to say, “I had made wishes to Allah Almighty and two have been fulfilled and I am still waiting expectantly for the third. I had asked Allah Almighty that I become among the Zaahids and this wish of mine has been fulfilled. Another proof of this is that my heart neither becomes happy when I receive anything and nor does it become sad when anything of mine is destroyed. My second wish was that I am given immense strength and power to make as much Ibadah as possible and this wish of mine has certainly been fulfilled. I am able to perform immense Ibadah during the day and night. My third wish was that I am martyred in the Path of Allah and until now, this wish has not yet been fulfilled. But I am certaint in te Allah Almighty that this wish of mine will also be fulfilled.”

Abdur Rahman bin Zaid narrates that they joined a certain expedition and with them were also the two famous Muhaditheen, namely Alqamah bin Qais and Amar bin Utbah – may Allah be pleased with them. One day, a very strange thing took place because Hadrat Sayyiduna Amar bin Utbah – may Allah be pleased with him – wore a clean white outfit and stood among the other Muslim Mujahideen and declared, “If my blood can flow on these white clothing in the Path of Allah, how excellent it would be.”

As he was saying these, one of the Kaafirs aimed a rock at the Muslim army and this rock hit Hadrat Sayyiduna Amar bin Utbah – may Allah be pleased with him – on his head. His entire clothing became soaked with blood and within a few moments, he was martyred.

Imam Ebrahim Nahk’i – may Allah be pleased with him – reports that the Janazah of this Saint was performed by his eminent teacher, Hadrat Sayyiduna Alqamah bin Qais – may Allah be pleased with him. This incident occurred in the expedition of Tustar during the blessed era of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani – may Allah be pleased with him. (Tahzeeb)
