It is reported that one day, the eminent Saint, Hadrat Sayyiduna Sirri Saqti Radi Allahu ‘Anhu, was walking when he noticed a person laying on the ground in a drunken state. His mouth was also over flowing with alcohol. However, the strange thing is that the words “Allah! Allah!” were also uttered by this person without him even realizing it.

When Hadrat Sayyiduna Sirri Saqti Radi Allahu ‘Anhu noticed this, he picked up his head towards the Heavens and said, “O Allah! This person is remembering You in this state! This is certainly not in keeping with Your Greatness.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Sirri Saqti Radi Allahu ‘Anhu then asked for some water and decided to wash the mouth of this person. After his mouth had been washed, Hadrat Sayyiduna Sirri Saqti Radi Allahu ‘Anhu continued on his journey.

When this person once again gained consciousness, the people informed him that the great Saint Hadrat Sayyiduna Sirri Saqti Radi Allahu ‘Anhu came and when he saw this person in this state, he decided to wash his mouth. When this person heard this, he became extremely embarrassed and felt ashamed.

He then addressed himself, “O Nafs, may you be destroyed! If you do not feel shame for Allah azza wajal and His friends, who would you feel shame for?” He then made sincere Taubah for his misguided past.

At night, while Hadrat Sayyiduna Sirri Saqti Radi Allahu ‘Anhu was asleep, he heard someone declare to him in a dream, “O Sirri! You had washed this person’s mouth for our Divine Pleasure. Therefore, for your sake, we have cleansed his heart.”

In the morning, when Hadrat Sayyiduna Sirri Saqti Radi Allahu ‘Anhu asked people about this person, he found this person in a Masjid busy reading his Salaah. When this person had completed his Salaah, Hadrat Sayyiduna Sirri Saqti Radi Allahu ‘Anhu asked him about his condition. He replied, “Ya Sayyidi, why are you asking me about my state when it is through you that He had opened my heart and has changed me?”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Sirri Saqti Radi Allahu ‘Anhu asked him who had informed him about this. He said, “The same Being Who had cleansed my mouth through someone else and has blessed me with His Divine Mercy and Favour.” (Ar Roudul Faai’iq)
