Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali bin Hashram – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates:

A neighbour of Hadrat Sayyiduna Fudail bin Ayyaz – may Allah be pleased with him – informed me about the state before the Taubah of the great Saint. He informed me that prior to making Taubah, Hadrat Sayyiduna Fudail bin Ayyaz – may Allah be pleased with him – was a very famous robber and highwayman. He was so feared because he could rob an entire caravan on his own.

One day, a certain caravan arrived in his locality and they spent the night at that place. When Hadrat Sayyiduna Fudail bin Ayyaz – may Allah be pleased with him – approached these people to rob them, he heard one of them saying, “You people should not go towards that village but choose another route because there is a person called Fudail who is a very dangerous highwayman and who lives in that place.”

It is mentioned that when he heard these words, he began to tremble and appeared in front of these people and declared, “O people! I am Fudail bin Ayyaz who is standing in front of you. Go and be in peace, you are all safe. I swear by Allah that from today, I will never disobey Allah Almighty.”

After saying this, he left the area and dedicated the rest of his life to the Ibadah of Allah.

Another version is that on that night he invited the people of the caravan for dinner and also informed them that they should not concern themselves about Fudail because they were safe from him.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Fudail bin Ayyaz – may Allah be pleased with him – then went to bring some hay for their animals and when he returned, one of them was reading the 16th verse of Surah Al Hadeed (57) which is:

اَلَمْ یَاۡنِ لِلَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡۤا اَنۡ تَخْشَعَ قُلُوۡبُہُمْ لِذِکْرِ اللہِ وَمَا نَزَلَ مِنَ الْحَقِّ

“Has not the time come for the believers to surrender their hearts to

Allah’s remembrance and to this truth that has come down?”

It is mentioned that when Hadrat Sayyiduna Fudail bin Ayyaz – may Allah be pleased with him – heard these verses, it was like a lightning bolt had pierced his heart. He began to weep and declared, “Yes why not! By Allah, the time has arrived.” He then made Taubah from all his previous transgressions. (Uyunul Hikaayah)
