The title of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar bin Abdul Aziz – may Allah be pleased with him – was “Abu Hafz”. His full name is ‘Umar bin Abdul Aziz bin Marwan bin Al Ja’em. His mother was the grand daughter of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him. Her name was Sayyidah Umme Aasim binte Aasim bin Umar Khattab – may Allah be pleased with her.
In the field of Hadith he was the student of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr bin Abdur Rahman – may Allah be pleased with him – and many other eminent Taaba’een. Among his students, they themselves were giants of their era such Imam Zuhri, Imam Abu Bakr bin Hazm – may Allah have mercy upon them – etc.
Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar bin Abdul Aziz – may Allah be pleased with him – became the leader of the Muslims after Sulayman bin Abdul Malik of the Ummayad Dynasty. His rule only lasted for two years and five months. However, in this short period, he had revolutionised the idea of propagating good and prohibiting evil. He had transformed the Umayyad Dynasty from a dynasty of oppression and gave people a glimpse into what the Khulafa-e-Rashideen period may have looked like. In other words, in his period, true justice and equality was not only spoken about but was actually seen in everyday life.
In fact, the history of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar bin Abdul Aziz – may Allah be pleased with him – is such that not only did it actually force the ‘Ulama to consider it a golden era in Islam but hundreds of years later, people still speak about him in the highest of terms. It is mentioned that from a very young age he displayed immense piety and good manners. At the same time, when he was given the responsibility of leading the Muslim nation, his entire life changed.
It is mentioned that when Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar bin Abdul Aziz – may Allah be pleased with him – was nominated as the Khalifah, he called his wife and females servants and informed them indeed a very great responsibility had been placed on his head and he could hardly concentrate on their needs. Therefore, if they wanted, he would freely release them and also give his wife a divorce. When they heard these words, they began to weep but were not prepared to leave him.
When Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar bin Abdul Aziz – may Allah be pleased with him – became the Khalifah, there was fifty thousand Dinaars in his house and he gave away all of this to the poor and needy and choose of life of being a Faqeer and a simple person. When he used to complete his duties as the leader of the Muslims and return home, he spent all his time in Ibadah. On most days, he used to fast. Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar bin Abdul Aziz – may Allah be pleased with him – also had a habit of making sure that whoever went to Madina Shareef, the person conveys his Salaam at the Roza mubaarak.
Sadly, he was poisoned and through this, he passed away in 101 A.H. in one of the areas in Hums.
