Hadrat Sayyidah Umme Habeebah – may Allah be pleased with her – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Whoever reads twelve rak’ah of Salaah during the day and night, a mansion in Jannah will be built for him. (These are the four rak’ah before the Zohr Fard, the two after the Fard of Zohr, the two rak’ah after Maghrib, the two rak’ah after ‘Isha Fard and the two rak’ah before the Fard of Fajr). She also continues, “From the moment I heard these words, I have never ever missed these Sunnah.” (Sahih Muslim Shareef)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Juhayfah Wahb bin Abdullah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that, “The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – established a pact of brotherhood between Hadrat Sayyiduna Salman Farsi and Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Darda – may Allah be pleased with them. Hadrat Sayyiduna Salman Farsi – may Allah be pleased with him – one day went to visit his religious brother and he noticed the blessed wife of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Darda – may Allah be pleased with him – wearing old and tattered clothing. He then asked her how she was and she replied, “Your brother Abu Darda has no need for the world.” At that moment, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Darda – may Allah be pleased with him – also arrived. He then prepared some food for Hadrat Sayyiduna Salman Farsi – may Allah be pleased with hi-. He also explained to him that he should eat because he is fasting. However, Hadrat Sayyiduna Salman – may Allah be pleased with him – replied that he will not eat until Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Darda – may Allah be pleased with him – did not join him. The latter then broke his Nafil fast and joined him.

During the night, he began to read a lot of Nafil Salaah, however, Hadrat Sayyiduna Salman – may Allah be pleased with him – asked him to have some rest. He again awoke and again Hadrat Sayyiduna Salman – may Allah be pleased with him – asked him to have a rest. When the last part of the night appeared, Hadrat Sayyiduna Salman – may Allah be pleased with him – asked him to rise and they busied themselves in Ibadah.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Salman Farsi – may Allah be pleased with him – then advised him, “There is no doubt that you owe a right to Allah Almighty (which needs to be fulfilled). At the same time, your family also has a right over you. Your actual being also has a right over you. Therefore, you should fulfil the rights of everyone.”

In the morning, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Darda – may Allah be pleased with him – approached the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and mentioned what he was told by Hadrat Sayyiduna Salman Farsi – may Allah be pleased with him. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied, “Salman has spoken the truth.” (Sahih Bukhari Shareef)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Tha’labah – may Allah be pleased with him – was a very famous companion. He used to also make Du’a that he does not experience any pain when he passes away as other Muslims experience. This Du’a of his was certainly accepted.

It is said that once, while Hadrat Sayyiduna Tha’labah – may Allah be pleased with him – was performing the Tahajjud Salaah, he passed away while in Sajdah. At that precise moment, his daughter also dreamt that her father had passed away. She was extremely disturbed when she saw this dream and ran to see him. When she saw him still on the Musallah, she called out to him but he did not answer. When she looked closely, she realized that he had passed away while in Sajdah. (Al Usaabah)

There are many names given to Salaah at night. They include Tahajjud, Qiyamul Layl, Taraaweh, Nawaafil Salaah, etc. Hadrat Sayyiduna Bilal – may Allah be pleased with him – states that, “You should certainly perform the Tahajjud Salaah because this was the practise of the pious before you and it is a source of Divine closeness for you. It is also a means of eliminating sin and transgression and also something which prohibits you from sinning.” (Tirmidi Shareef, Ibn Khuzaymah, Tabarani Shareef)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “May Allah have mercy on that person who awakes for Qiyamul Lail (or Salaah during the night) and also awakens his wife so that she can also perform the Salaah. If the wife refuses to wake (or displays laziness), he may throw water droplets on her face.

“May Allah have Mercy on that female who awakes at night (for the Tahajjud) and performs her Salaah and also awakens her husband so that he can also perform the Salaah and (if he is overtaken by sleep) or refuses, she may sprinkle water droplets on his face.” (Abu Daud, Nisaa’i, Imam Ahmed, Ibn Habban, Ibn Abi Shaybah in the Musannaf, Jam’ul Jawaameh)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that one night the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – came to see Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – and Bibi Fatimah – may Allah be pleased with her. He then asked, “Why do you not read the Tahajjud?” Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “O Prophet of Allah, our lives are in the control of Allah. When He wishes for us to awake, we will awake.” When he mentioned these words, the blessed face of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – displayed a little anger. He then left and did not say a word. As he was returning, he was hitting his blessed thighs and saying, “Mankind is the most argumentative compared to other (creation).” (Sahih Bukhari Shareef)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Rabee’ah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates, “During the night, I used to bring water for the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – for Wudu and other items as well. One day, (in a state of happiness), he said to me, “Whatever you wish to ask, you may ask.” I replied, “I wish for your companionship in Jannah.” He again asked me the same question and again I gave him the same reply. He then declared, “Then for your sake, increase in sajdah (as a means of help) to me.” (Sahih Muslim Shareef, Nisaa’i, Abu Daud, Tirmidi, Ibn Maja)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with them – narrates: “During the time the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – was in this mundane word, whenever anyone saw a dream, they used to present this in front of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and an interpretation of this dream was given. I also had the sincere wish to be able to see a dream so that I could present this in his blessed court. In those days, I was young.

“During those days, I sometimes also used to sleep in the Masjid. One night, in my dream, I saw two Angels. They were holding me and taking me towards the Fire of Hell. I then noticed a well and inside this well there were people whom I did not recognize. When I saw this, I asked the Allah Almighty to protect me from the Fire of Hell. After this, I met another Angel who informed me that I should not be afraid. I then informed Hadrat Sayyidah Hafsah – may Allah be pleased with her – of this dream. She then related this dream of mine to the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then stated, ‘Abdullah in a nice young man, if only he could perform the Tahajjud Salaah at night.’ Hadrat Saalim – may Allah be pleased with him – mentions that after this, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah – may Allah be pleased with him – used to sleep very less during the night. (In other words, most his night was spent in Ibadah). (Sahih Bukhari Shareef)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Jabir – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “He who fears that he will not be able to rise in the last part of the night, then he should perform his Witr after the (‘Isha Salaah). As for that person who has hope that he will arise in the last part of the night, then he should perform the Witr in the last part of the night. The reason is that Salaah in the last part of the night is when the Angels present themselves.” (Muslim Shareef)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Jabir – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that once the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – performed eight rak’ah in congregation and also the Witr. The following night, we were gathered in the Masjid and we have hope that he would appear in front of us. We continued to remain in the Masjid until morning arrived.

We then approached the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and asked, “O Prophet of Allah! We had hope that you would appear in front of us and perform the Salaah.” The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied, “I did not want that Witr would become Fard upon you.” (Sahih ibn Khuzaymah). In other words, such is the greatness of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – that if there is an action performed by him and this becomes consistent, it is so loved by Allah Almighty that He makes that action Fard upon the Ummah of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.
