The following incident happened after the Battle of Hunain.
Everywhere that one could see, one could see the Kuffaar in chains. All of them had become prisoners of the victorious Muslim army. There were those people who had sworn that they would wipe out the existence of the Muslim Ummah. All of their pride had been destroyed. All their strength in numbers had become the property of the Muslims. Their collective strength and power had been destroyed.
The swords of the Muslims were to be seen by everyone within this area after the Battle of Uhud. They were being spoken of around the world in fear and respect. This battle was the last of the great battles that the Mushriks of Arabia could start against the Muslims. After this, the Mushriks of Arabic were a spent force. Wherever one looked in Hunain, the only thing one could see was defeat on the faces of the enemies of Islam and the Muslims.
At the same time, there was a massive amount of booty which were captured by the Muslims. They included horses, gold, silver and a number of others items. The Muslims were extremely joyous that Allah Almighty had blessed them with victory and had also made them owners of the wealth which belonged to the Mushriks.
Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then appeared to distribute this large amount of wealth which lay in front of him. Those who asked were given whatever they wanted. Some were taking a hundred camels. Some were taking valuable pieces of items.
However, there was also another group of people who were merely watching what was happening. But they were receiving nothing. Finally, the last part of the war booty was given, and these people had received nothing. Who were these people? These people were known as the Ansaar. These were those blessed people who had given everything they had for the sake of Islam. They had sacrificed their lives, their family and friends, their little wealth and even their homes for Islam but today, they were mere onlookers while other Muslims around them were enjoying the spoils of war.
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Sa’eed Khudri – may Allah be pleased with him – explains that when Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – had given all of this war booty away and had given nothing to the Ansaar, they felt very disheartened. Some of them began to talk among themselves and some began to murmur that perhaps Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – had preferred the other Arab tribes above them. Some among them said, “Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – is not giving anything to those people whose swords are still dripping with the blood of the enemies of Islam and whose blood still stains the sword of the enemies of Islam.”
Hadrat Sa’ad bin Abaadah – may Allah be pleased with him – was given the responsibility of taking this complaint to Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. When he approached Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – he said, “O Prophet of Allah! Whatever booty has come in your possession, you have distributed it among the other Arabs and some of them have indeed received large amounts of this booty. Yet, the Ansaar, in spite of helping Islam, have received nothing in return. This is the reason that certain people are murmuring a few things.”
After listening to the complaint of Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’ad bin Abaadah – may Allah be pleased with him, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – asked him, “O Sa’ad! What is your opinion about this?”
He replied, “O Prophet of Allah! I am also a member of my community, (in other words, whatever my community is saying, I will have to agree with them).”
Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then commanded him to gather all the Ansaar in one large tent. After hearing this command, he called all the Ansaar to gather in one large tent. When they heard this command, even the Muhaajireen came forward, but they were informed that this was to be only a gathering of the Ansaar. When all the Ansaar had gathered inside the tent, Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’ad bin Abaadah – may Allah be pleased with him – approached Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and informed him, “O Prophet of Allah! The Ansaar have gathered inside the tent. Please come.”
Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then entered this tent and after praising Allah Almighty, he said to them, “O people of the Ansaar! What type of murmurs have reached me which comes from you? What type of displeasure is this which is hidden in your hearts? Is it not true that I came among you in this state where you had lost the right path? Allah Almighty through me showed you the path of guidance and righteousness. Is it not true that you were people in need and Allah Almighty has made you rich (in Imaan). Is it not true that you were enemies one of another but Allah Almighty through me has joined your hearts.”
When the Ansaars heard these blessed words, they could not answer. Every one of them remained silent. In fact, all their heads were completely bowed. In fact, to them, it felt like they had committed a serious crime questioning Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – about the war booty. They felt extreme guilt. In fact, their faces displayed embarrassment and shame. Their tongues were paralysed. They could do nothing except say, “Why not. We accept and acknowledge the Mercy of Allah Almighty and His beloved Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.”
Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – again asked them, “O people of the Ansaar! You will not give me an answer?”
They replied, “O Prophet of Allah! What answer can we give you? We are fully aware and are certain that whatever kindness, mercy and reward and favours have come to us, all of this is because we have obeyed Allah Almighty and His beloved Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. Besides this, we can say nothing further.” (In other words, the respect which they possess is because of Allah Almighty and His beloved Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and nothing else. In other words, they displayed immense humility and sincerity in their answer).
When Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – saw that no proper answer was forthcoming from them, he declared, “Yes, I swear by Allah! That if you wish, you can say and indeed your words would be accepted as the truth that, ‘you came to us as someone who had been accused of being a false (Prophet), yet, we accepted and believed in you. (You can say to me that), you came to us without any helper and we helped and assisted you. You came to us as someone who had been removed from his house and we gave you protection. You came to us without anything and in dire need and we made you independent and free of sadness.’” (Allahu Akbar)
“O people of the Ansaar! Your hearts have become displeased because of mere temporary objects and ordinary items. (This are those items) which I have given to those whose hearts can be fully turned to Islam and I have given Islam completely to you.” (In other words, you are genuine Muslims and have no need for these types of objects which are merely temporary and have no value in the long term).
He then continued, “O people of the Ansaar! Are you not happy with this thought that people are taking home camels and goats and you are taking home the Prophet of Allah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him”.
“I swear by that Divine Being in Whose Power is my life! If migration did not take place, I would have been a member of the Ansaar. If all the people go in the direction of a certain valley and the Ansaar go in the direction of another valley, then I will also travel with the Ansaar towards that valley. O Allah! Please have Mercy upon the Ansaar, upon the children of the Ansaar and upon the children of the children of the Ansaar.”
It is reported that when Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – had completed his speech, the state of the Ansaar was something to behold. Every one of them was speechless. You could even hear a pin drop. Wherever you turned, you saw people weeping silently and then bursting into tears. Their heads were bowed and they could not control their emotions and weeping. Their beards had become soaked with tears. In fact, some of the beards glistened like they had rain drops on them.
In the treatise, Taarik Tabari, it is mentioned that the sounds of their weeping could also be heard and all of their beards were soaked with the amount of tears they had shed. When they had regained their composure, they all made a statement which would be forever remembered in Islamic history and which was, “We are completely satisfied and happy with the distribution of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and we are extremely overjoyed at our great fortune.” (Taarikh Tabari, Sahih Muslim Shareef, Sahih ibn Habban, Musannaf ibn Abu Shaybah, Musannaf Abdur Razzaq, Al Mo’jam Al Kabeer by Imam Tabarani, etc).
