On the 17th of Ramadan, 8 A.H., on a Tuesday, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – left Mehruz Zaharaan for Mecca Shareef. He also commanded his followers that they should hold Abu Sufyan at the bottom of the mountain so that he could see the forces of Allah Almighty which went by and their immense strength and numbers.

The flag of the Ansaar was held by Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’ad bin Abaadah – may Allah be pleased with him-. As he walked past Abu Sufyan, he remarked, “Today is a day of bloodshed and killing. Today, that which is Haraam has become Halaal and today Allah Almighty will bring disgrace to the Quraish.”

After a few moments, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – also passed by the same area where Abu Sufyan was standing. When he saw Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – he said to him, “O Prophet of Allah! Have you heard those words which were uttered by Sa’ad?”

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – asked him what Sa’ad had said and he revealed the frightening things which we told to him by Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’ad bin Abaadah – may Allah be pleased with him.

However, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – comforted him and mentioned, “Today will be that day in which the Ka’ba will be shown all due respect. And today will be a day in which the Quraish will be given respect by the Allah Almighty.”

Thereafter, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – sent someone to Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’ad – may Allah be pleased with him – who took away the flag of the Ansaar from him and handed it to his son, Hadrat Sayyiduna Qais – may Allah be pleased with him.

Abu Sufyan left in a hurry towards his residence. When he reached there, he announced to the people present, “O people, this is Muhammad who is coming with a mighty army. Where do you have such an army which will be able to fight against them? Therefore, whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan, he will be protected”.

When his wife Hindah heard these words, she was furious. We are talking about someone who was an ardent enemy of Islam. She continued to insult her husband and also accused him of not standing up against the Muslims. However, he replied that he had never seen such a mighty army before.

By now, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – had already reached Zi Tuwa. It is mentioned that in all of these moments, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – adopted such immense humility that the hair on his blessed beard was nearly touching the saddle.

At this place, he divided the army and kept Hadrat Sayyiduna Khalid bin Waleed – may Allah be pleased with him – on one flank. He was also to defeat anyone from the Quraish who tried to stand against them. This was the Muslim cavalry. He then handed the command of the infantry to Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah – may Allah be pleased with him. It is mentioned that the battalion under the command of Hadrat Sayyiduna Khalid bin Waleed – may Allah be pleased with him – also killed twelve Mushriks on the road who tried to attack them.

The truth has come.

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, surrounded by the Ansaar and the Muhaajireen, entered the Haram Shareef. He then kissed the Hajre Aswad and made Tawaaf of the Ka’ba. At that moment, he also had a bow in his hand which helped him in bringing down some of the idols which were placed around the Ka’ba. He kept on repeating that truth has arrived and falsehood has been perished. Each time, one of the idols fell to the ground, he kept repeating this Qur’anic verse.

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – also made Tawaaf while sitting on his camel and since he did not have Ihraam, he only performed the Tawaaf. After completing the Tawaaf, he called Uthman bin Talha and asked him for the keys of the Ka’ba. (Al Bidaayah wan Nihaayah, Seerat Ibn Hishaam)

Obviously the Quraish were sitting in the Haram waiting for his reaction and how he would treat them. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then held the door of the Ka’ba and said, “Besides Allah, there is no one worthy of worship. He is Alone and has no partners. He had certainly showed us the truth of His Divine Promise. And certainly He has blessed us with victory and all victory belongs to Him. I also hereby nullify all blood feuds and revenge”.

He then pardoned his enemies.

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then asked the people of the Quraish how they felt that he would treat them. They replied that he was “Kareem Ibn Kareem.”

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then said that he will mention the same thing to them which Nabi Yusuf – peace be upon him – had mentioned to his brothers that there will be no revenge, “All of you may leave, you are also free.”

Note: Nabi Yusuf – peace be upon him – had pardoned his brothers in spite of the immense oppression he had suffered at their hands and it is to be expected that brothers normally pardon each other. This is their normal nature. Yet, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – is pardoning people who were his ardent enemies and people who had killed many of his beloved companions. There is certainly a great difference between the action of Nabi Yusuf – peace be upon him – and Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.

When the time came for Salaah, he ordered Hadrat Sayyiduna Bilal – may Allah be pleased with him – to stand on the roof of the Ka’ba and sound the Adhan. It is to be remembered that at that moment, Abu Sufyan bin Harb, Itaab bin Usaid and Haarith bin Hishaam was also standing on the floor of the Haram Shareef. Itaab mentioned privately to his friends, “The Lord has blessed Usaid, (someone else) that he died prior to hearing the Adhan. If he had heard the Adhan, he would have certainly been highly displeased.”

Haaarith then said, “If only I knew that he was on the right path, I would certainly follow him”.

Abu Sufyan replied, “Look, I will not say a thing because if I say anything, certainly these pebbles in front of me will bear testimony against me.”

A few moments later, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – passed by this group and said, “Whatever you people were saying just now, my Creator has informed me about these words”.

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him –then repeated whatever they had spoken. When they heard this, Haarith and Itaab immediately declared that he was indeed the Messenger of Allah Almighty. They also admitted that no one else knew of their private conversation and if there was another person among them, they would be under the impression that he had informed Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – but since there was no fourth person, they knew that his words were nothing but the truth.

In spite of his busy schedule, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – did not miss the Chaast Salaah. One can imagine how busy any person can be when he enters any city heading a victorious army. In fact, at this time, a person would even miss a Fard action. However, on that day, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – entered the house of Sayyidah Umme Haani binte Abi Talib – may Allah be pleased with her – and after performing the Ghusal, he performed eight rak’ah of Chaast Salaah. Since it was the time of Chaast, everyone knew what Salaah he was performing. Some also thought that perhaps it was a Salaah which was performed as a mark of appreciation for their victory.

At the same time, Umme Haani had also given certain people refuge and safety in her house. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – mentioned to her, “O Umme Haani! Whoever you have given safety to, I have also given that person safety.” The reason for this was because she had given safety to two of her brother-in-laws and Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him, who was her brother, had wanted to enter her house to have them killed. (Sahih Bukhari)

Those who ran.

It is reported that Akramah bin Abi Jahl had escaped from Mecca Shareef. He wanted to travel to Yemen, however his wife approached Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and asked for his safety. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then gave him safety. She then ran after Akramah and returned with him. They also accepted Islam after this incident.

Hibaar bin Aswad also ran from Mecca Shareef and he had assaulted the beloved daughter of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, Sayyidah Zainab – may Allah be pleased with her. In fact, she fell of her camel and lost her child. He also accepted Islam later on.

As for the wife of Abu Sufyan, she also changed her attitude when coming in front of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. She was also responsible for the despicable act of disfiguring the blessed body of Hadrat Sayyiduna Ameer Hamza – may Allah be pleased with him – and she was extremely afraid that she would  be recognized.

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – also took allegiance with people who were around him. He made them promise that they would not associate partners with Allah Almighty. He made them promise that they would not steal. However, when Hindah heard these words, she asked, “Abu Sufyan is a very miserly person. What happens if I take a little of his wealth?”

Abu Sufyan who was also standing at the same place then declared, “Whatever you have taken in the past, I have made it Halaal for you.”

When Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – heard these words, he smiled. He then asked her “Are you Hindah?”

She replied, “Yes of Prophet of Allah. Whatever had happened between us, please pardon all of it and may Allah Almighty also pardon you as well.”

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then continued to take allegiance from them on other issues. He said that they should not perform adultery. Hindah replied, “Can a freed women actually commit adultery?” Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – continued, “and you should not kill your infants.” To this Hindah replied, “I had taken care of them from little but when they grew up, you people had killed them. Therefore, you should know better.”

(Bear in mind that the son of Hindah, namely Hanzalah bin Abi Sufyan, was killed in the Battle of Badr). It is reported that when she mentioned these words, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – laughed so much that his back actually bent forward. In fact, even Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – had a broad smile on his blessed face.

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – also mentioned that they should not commit false accusation. Hindah replied that indeed he had given them a noble message. He also mentioned to them that they would not disobey Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – in any command which was clearly known to them. Hindah replied, “I swear by Allah that I have not come in this gathering to disobey you”. It is reported that as she was returning home, she personally broke all the idols which belonged to her. As she was breaking each idol she was also insulting these idols and saying that these idols had misled them. (Al Biaadyah wan Nihaayah)

He who conquers the heart of people is the person who truly conquers.

On the 20th of Ramadan, 8 A.H., the crown of victory was placed on the blessed shoulders of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. Imagine the state of those who had for years gone against the message of Islam. Those who had murdered without mercy some of the shining stars of Islam. Imagine the terror they were feeling at this time when such a mighty Muslim army was standing in front of them.

As Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – was breaking each idol and as it fell to the ground, the pride and arrogance of the Quraish was also falling to the ground. Today, the Haram Shareef was resounding with the sounds of “Allahu Akbar”. The blessed voice of Hadrat Sayyiduna Bilal – may Allah be pleased with him – was also heard in various mountain tops as he sounded the Adhan. Today, everyone had become fully aware of the true greatness of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.

This is that blessed Prophet who is saying to his enemies that whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is protected, whoever enters the Haram Shareef is protected, whoever enters his house and closes his door, is protected.

Then a sound was heard, “O people of Mecca! Come forward and accept the message of Islam. If you do so, you will be in peace.”

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – is declaring to all, “Power only belongs to Allah Almighty Who has no partners. He is the One who had displayed His Divine Promise to be true. He is the One who helps all creation and He is the One who defeats His enemies”.

Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – is also mentioning to these people that all blood feuds and revenge is now cancelled. What happened in the past remains in the past. He is then asking the Quraish, “Are you aware of how I am going treat you?”

They answer in the following words, “We have great hope in your immense goodness and kindness. You are certainly a most merciful brother and the son of a most merciful person”.

When Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – heard these words, he declares, “Go, all of you are free. I will say the same thing to you which Nabi Yusuf – peace be upon him – mentioned to his brothers that today, there is no disgrace on you.”

After completing the seven Tawaaf, he entered the Ka’ba and performed the Salaah. It is mentioned that there was a person from the Banu Bakr whose name was Hamaas bin Qais. He was also a famous Mushrik in Mecca Shareef. For a number of days, he was preparing his weapons. His intention was to fight against Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and his beloved companions. On the morning of the conquest of Mecca Shareef, he awoke very early and said to his wife, “Today, I will bring one companion of Muhammad as a slave for you.”

However, suddenly a short while later, he returned to his house in a state of immense panic. He then shouted to his wife to shut the door. His wife then asked him in a sarcastic manner about the slave which he had promised her. He replied, “If you had seen the power of this army and the fact that even mighty generals like Akramah and Safwaan had run away, you would not blame me. They are a force behind whom there is no sound. They walk with might and power and everything bows down to them.”

Another unusual thing which people see is the fact that Wahshi is presented in front of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. This is the black slave who killed the beloved uncle of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, Hadrat Sayyiduna Ameer Hamzah – may Allah be pleased with him. On the day of the conquest of Mecca, he had run away to Taif. However, at this time, he is returning with his entire family who are reciting the Kalimah. He also asking Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – for safety and protection. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – inquire from his blessed companions, “Has Wahshi arrived?” They reply that he has arrived. When he presents himself in front of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – he is asked about the manner in which he martyred the blessed uncle of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. When Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – listens to the description of this incident, the blessed eyes of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – are filled with tears. He also orders that Wahshi should not sit in front of him again. In spite of this action of his, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – accepts his Islam and pardons the person.

Has history ever shown us such amazing examples of kindness and forgiveness? There is no doubt that such examples will never be seen in history again. Kindness of this immense stature can only be displayed by Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.

When the call is made that everyone is pardoned, the people in Mecca Shareef come forward in large numbers to accept Islam. They include men and women and even children. Among these females, there is one Hindah binte Utbah. She was also aware that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – knew how she had treated the blessed body of Hadrat Sayyiduna Ameer Hamzah – may Allah be pleased with him – and that she had left no stone unturned in trying to harm Islam and the Muslims.

There is no doubt that her crimes were such that could be considered as unpardonable. Yet, even her acceptance of Islam is accepted in this blessed court. She is also pardoned. Such was the effect of this action by Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – that everything non-Islam was completely removed from her heart and soul. She now had immense dislike and hatred for the idols around her. When she returned home, she gave these idols a look of contempt and continued to destroy one idol after another. She was also mentioning to the idols, “We were so misled by your evil.”

She also sent two goats as a gift to Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and also complained that her goats hardly gave birth. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then made a special Du’a for her for Barakah and thereafter, she was blessed with numerous goats. Whenever she used to give these goats as gift to the poor, she used to announce to them, “This is the result of the Du’a of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. I thank Allah Almighty that He has blessed us with the wealth of Islam”.

There is no doubt that such a day in history cannot be repeated. One side, the message of Islam is been elevated and on the other side, falsehood and idol worship is been destroyed. On another side, immense mercy and kindness is been displayed. (Taarik Tabari, Usdul Ghaabah, Al Usaabah etc)
