In Surah Fatha, verse 29, the Qur’an declares that:

“Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Noble Messenger of Allah; and his companions are stern with the disbelievers and merciful among themselves – you will see them bowing and falling in prostration, seeking Allah’s munificence and His pleasure; their signs are on their faces, from the effects of prostrations; this trait of theirs is mentioned in the Taurat; and their trait is mentioned in the Injeel; like a cultivation that sprouted its shoot, then strengthened it, then thickened and then stood firm upon its stem, pleasing the farmer – in order to enrage the disbelievers with them; Allah has promised forgiveness and a great reward to those among them who have faith and do good deeds.”

Bear in mind that Hardrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – is the special confidant and friend of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – is the Ameen and advisor in matters pertaining to Divine Command and Divine Instruction.

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani – may Allah be pleased with him – is the one who was martyred by the enemies of Allah Almighty and was martyred in his house.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – is the cousin brother of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and was blessed with inheriting the secret knowledge of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and was always who was at the forefront of defending Islam against any enemy.

These are those blessed personalities who are considered as the rightly guided Khulafah and the foremost leaders of Islam. They completed the mission of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and through them, Islam reached the highest pinnacle of glory and respect. Whatever pleased the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, they were forefront in following and accepting this command.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Zarr Ghaffaari – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that there is a statement of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – which reads, “He who pleases any companion of mine, he has pleased me and he who has pleased me, he has pleased the Allah Almighty and he who has pleased Allah Almighty, then it is the Divine Mercy of Allah Almighty that this person enters Jannah.”

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “In no one’s heart will love for this four be found, (except) in the hearts of the true believers, they are Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him, ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him, ‘Uthman – may Allah be pleased with him – and Ali – may Allah be pleased with him.” (Hulyatul Awliyah, 230)

The four are from the Nur of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “On the Day of Judgement, I will arise in this state that on my right will be Abu Bakr, on my left will be ‘Umar, behind me will be ‘Uthman and in front of me will be Ali. In the hands of Ali – may Allah be pleased with him, there will be the Liwaahul Hamd (Flag of Divine Praise). It will be a brocade made from silk and precious stones.”

A Bedouin stood up and asked, “May my mother and father be sacrificed for you, will Ali be able to hold it up?”

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – replied, “Why not? He will certainly be able to carry it and he has been blessed with many magnificent qualities. Such as my patience, the beauty of Nabi Yusuf – peace be upon him – and the strength of Jibraeel Ameen. The Liwaahul Hamd will be in the hand of Ali bin Abi Talib and all of mankind will be below my flag.”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “May Allah Almighty grace Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – with His Divine Grace, he had given his daughter to me in marriage, he allowed me to sit on his camel and brought me to Madina Shareef and freed Bilal – may Allah be pleased with him – with his own wealth. Allah Almighty gave ‘Umar May – may Allah be pleased with him – with His Divine Grace. He speaks the truth even though it may seem bitter. Allah Almighty grace ‘Uthman – may Allah be pleased with him – with His Divine Mercy. Even the Angels display bashfulness in front of him. Allah Almighty – may Allah be pleased with him – grace Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – with His Divine Mercy, ‘O Allah! Wherever Ali walks, allow truth to walk with him.’” (Jamia Tirmidi)

It is reported that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – once said to Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him, “O Abu Bakr! Allah Almighty created me with the essence of Nur. He then looked at this Nur and allowed me to stand in His Divine Court. I then began to perspire with extreme humility and bashfulness. Four droplets of perspiration fell from me. O Abu Bakr! From the first droplet, you were created. From the second (droplet), ‘Umar (was created). From the third (droplet), ‘Uthman (was created) and from the fourth (droplet) Ali (was created). O Abu Bakr your Nur, the Nur of ‘Umar, the Nur of ‘Uthman and the Nur of Ali was created from my Nur.’”

He who hates the Ashaab are people of Hell.

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “Without doubt, Allah Almighty has given superiority of my Ashaab over all of creation except the Prophets. And from my Ashaab, He has chosen four of them for excellence. Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, ‘Uthman and Ali – may Allah be pleased with them”. (ibn Habban)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “There is no doubt that Allah Almighty has made it Fard upon you to love Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, ‘Uthman and Ali just as He has made Salaah, Fasting, Zakah and Hajj, Fard upon you. Whoever has enmity for any one of them, Allah Almighty will not accept their Salaah, their Zakah, their fasting or their hajj. He will be taken from his grave and thrown straight into hell.” (Firdousul Akhbaar, Imam Daylimi)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Anas – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “There are four corners in the fountain (in Jannah). In the first corner is Abu Bakr, in the second is ‘Umar, in the third is ‘Uthman and in the fourth is Ali. He who loves Abu Bakr but dislikes ‘Umar, Abu Bakr will not allow him to drink (from this fountain). He who loves ‘Umar but dislikes ‘Uthman, ‘Umar will not allow him to drink from (this fountain). He who loves ‘Uthman, but dislikes Ali, ‘Uthman will not allow him to drink (from this fountain). He who loves Ali, but dislikes ‘Uthman, Ali will not allow him to drink from this fountain. Therefore, he who loves Abu Bakr, he had established his religion. He who loves ‘Umar, he will be recorded among the people of Imaan. He who loves ‘Uthman, he is brightened with the Nur of Imaan. He who loves Ali, he has performed a good deed. Allah Almighty loves those who do good deeds. He who has good thoughts about all of them, he is a true believer. And he who thinks bad about them, he is a Munaafiq.” (Ibn Habban, ibn Jouzi)

He who has achieved greatness, has achieved greatness.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that, “We were once sitting in the blessed gathering of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – when Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – appeared. Welcoming him, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – declared, ‘O that person who made (others) joyous (and supported them) with his wealth and choose others over himself, welcome.’

“Thereafter, Hadrat Sayyiduna Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – arrived. He then declared, ‘Welcome to that person who is able to distinguish between truth and falsehood. Welcome to that person through whom Allah Almighty completed the religion and (through whom), the Muslims were given respect.’

“Thereafter, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani – may Allah be pleased with him – arrived. He stated, ‘My son-in-law, the husband of two my daughters, welcome. He who had joined my two Nurs. He who in his life is blessed and in death, he will be martyred. For his killer, indeed there is the Fire of Hell.’

“Thereafter, Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – arrived. He declared, ‘Welcome to my blessed cousin brother. I and he have been created from one Nur.’” (Firdousul Akhbaar, Imam Daylimi)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Saeed Khudri – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, “I entered Jannah and was walking among the gardens, the streams and the trees when a fruit touched my hands. When I held it in my hands, it broke into four pieces. From each piece a maiden of Jannah appeared. If she only revealed a single finger nail of hers, then the entire heavens and earth will be embroiled in fitnah. If she only reveals her one palm, then the brightness of this would over shadow the brightness of the moon and sun. If she only smiled, then through this fragrance of hers the entire earth and heavens would be filled. I asked the first of them, “Who are you for?” She replied, “For Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him”.

“I then commanded her, ‘Go towards the mansion of your husband.’ When I asked the second, she replied, ‘I am for Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him’. I then commanded her, ‘Go to the mansion of your husband.’ I then asked the third and she replied, ‘I am for Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman – may Allah be pleased with him – who was wrapped in blood and was killed in an act of oppression.’ I then also commanded her to go to the mansion of her husband and she also departed. I then asked the fourth maiden and she remained silent. Thereafter, she said, “I swear by Allah that He has created me in the beauty of Sayyidah Fathima – may Allah be pleased with her – and has kept my name as her name and before two thousand years of his marriage to Hadrat Sayyidah Fathima – may Allah be pleased with her –He had performed my marriage with Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him.”

These are merely examples of the status and stature of the blessed companions of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. On the Day of Judgement, they will be taken to Jannah in full glory and grandeur.

The conversation between these two blessed companions.

It is reported that once Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – and Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman – may Allah be pleased with him – were busy with some mission of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – when the time of Asr appeared. Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – requested Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman – may Allah be pleased with him – to go forward as the Imaam. However, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “You are much more entitled than I. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – had also placed you forward and had also praised you.”

However, Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I will not step forward before you because I heard the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – declare, ‘How noble a person is ‘Uthman. He is my son-in-law and the husband of two of my daughters and he also combined both of my Nur.’”

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – continued, “I will not step in front before you, because I also heard the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – state, ‘Even the Angels are bashful in front of ‘Uthman.’” (Sahih Muslim)

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I will not step in front before you because I heard the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – declare, ‘Through ‘Umar, Islam became complete and the Muslims were given respect.’”

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – declared, “I will not step in front before you because I heard him say that ‘Uthman will collect the Qur’an and he is a beloved of Allah Almighty.”(Al Mustadrak)

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani – may Allah be pleased with him – declared, “I will not step in front before you because I heard him state, ‘How kind a person is ‘Umar. He takes care of the orphans and widows and he brings food to them at that time when everyone else is asleep.’” (Jamia Tirmidi)

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I will not step in front before you because I heard him say that the Allah Almighty has pardoned ‘Uthman (for supporting the Muslims during the expedition to Tabuk), Jaysul Usra.” (Al Kaamil. ibn Adi)

Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman replied, “I will not step in front of you because I heard him make a Du’a, ‘O Allah! Through ‘Umar ibn Khattab bestow honour to the Muslims.’ The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has also kept your name Farouq and through you, He has defined falsehood from truth.” (Sunan ibn Maja, Tabqaatul Kubra by Ibn Sa’ad)

When news of this conversation was heard by the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – he made a special Du’a for both of them and also praised the manner in which they treated each other.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates that one day Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – and Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – presented themselves at the door of the blessed quarters of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – then said to Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him, “Please step forward and knock on the door to seek permission to enter.”

However, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – requested him to do so and go forward before him.

However, Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I cannot go before that person of whom I heard the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – declare, ‘After me, the sun has never shone on anyone more greater than Abu Bakr.’” (Ibn Habban, Hulyatul Awliyah)

However, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I will not step before that person of whom the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated, ‘I have given the best of females (Hadrat Sayyidah Fathima) to the best of males, (Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him).’”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I will never step before that person of whom the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, ‘Whosoever wishes to see the blessed chest of Nabi Ebrahim – peace be upon him – should see the blessed chest of Abu Bakr.’”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I will never step in front of that person of whom the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, ‘Whoever wishes to see the beauty of Nabi Adam – peace be upon him – and Nabi Yusuf – peace be upon him, whoever wishes to see Nabi Moosa – peace be upon him – and his Salaah, whoever wishes to see Nabi ‘Isa – peace be upon him – and his Zuhd and whoever wishes to see me and my features, he should look at Ali.’”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – declared, “I will never step in front of that person of whom I heard the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – say, ‘On the Day of Judgement which will be a day of regret for many and on which day, all of creation will be gathered, then a caller will call out on behalf of the Allah Almighty, ‘O Abu Bakr! You and all those who love you, enter Jannah.’”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I will never step before that person to whom on the day of Hunain and Khyber, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – blessed with a gift of dates and milk and he also declared that, ‘This is a means of success and victory and a gift for Ali bin Abi Talib.’”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – declared, “I cannot step in front of that person of whom the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, ‘O Abu Bakr, you are the coolness of my eyes.’”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I cannot step before that person of whom the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has said that, ‘Ali will arrive with any steed from Jannah and a person will call out, ‘O Muhammad! In the world, you had a handsome father and handsome brother. The handsome father was Nabi Ebrahim – peace be upon him – the handsome brother was Hadrat Ali – may Allah be pleased with him.’”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I will not step in front of that person in whose greatness, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has said that, ‘When the Day of Judgement arrives, the keeper of Jannah, Hadrat Ridwaan, will bring the keys of Jannah and Hell and will declare, ‘O Abu Bakr! The Allah Almighty conveys His Salaam to you and also states that, ‘These are the keys of Jannah and Hell, whoever you wish, you may send to Jannah and whoever you wish, you may send them to Hell.’”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I cannot step before that person of whom the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, ‘Jibra’eel Ameen presented himself in front of me and declared, ‘O Prophet of Allah! Allah Almighty conveys His Salaam to you and also declares that, ‘I have love for you and for Ali’. I then fell in Sajdah. He also states, ‘I have love for Fathima.’ I then fell in Sajdah. He also states, ‘I have love for Hasan and Husain’. Again, I fell in Sajdah.’”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I will not step in front of that person in whose greatness, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, ‘If the Imaan of Abu Bakr was weighed and the Imaan of the entire world was weighed, the Imaan of Abu Bakr would be greater.’” (Shuhubul Imaan, Imam Bahiqi)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I will never step before that person in whose greatness the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, ‘On the Day of Judgement, Ali will arrive with his children and his wife being carried on camels. People will ask as to which Prophet this is and a voice will declare, ‘This is the friend of Allah, namely Ali bin Abi Talib.’”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I will never step before that person in whose greatness the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, ‘Tomorrow on the Day of Judgement, people on the plains of Mesher will hear a voice from the eight doors of Jannah saying, ‘O Siddique Akbar! Through whichever door you choose, you may enter Jannah.’”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr replied, “I will never step in front of that person in whose greatness, the beloved Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, ‘In Jannah, between my mansion and the mansion of Nabi Ebrahim – peace be upon him – will be the mansion of Ali bin Abi Talib.’”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I will never step forward in front of that person in whose greatness the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has stated that, ‘The people of the heavens, the close Angels to Allah Almighty, the Angels of Nur and those Angels who are near the Arsh are daily looking at Abu Bakr Siddique.’”

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I will never step in front of that person in whose greatness and in whose family greatness, Allah Almighty has declared:

وَ یُطْعِمُوۡنَ الطَّعَامَ عَلٰی حُبِّہٖ مِسْکِیۡنًا وَّ یَتِیۡمًا وَّ اَسِیۡرًا ﴿۸﴾

‘And out of His love, they give food to the needy, the orphan and the prisoner.’” (Surah Dahr, verse 8)

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – replied, “I will never step in front of that person in whose greatness the Qur’an has stated that, ‘And those who brought this truth and those who testify for it – these are the pious.’” (Surah Zumar, verse 33)

At that moment, Allah Almighty sent Jibra’eel Ameen to the blessed court of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and when he presented himself, he declared, “O Prophet of Allah! Allah Almighty sends His Salaam to you and also informs you that at this moment, the Angels from the seven heavens are looking at Abu Bakr and Ali and are also listening to their conversation and their immense respect and reverence displayed for each other. Please also join them and become a third person because the Divine Mercy of Allah Almighty has certainly surrounded them. He has also made their Imaan, their respect and their Islam complete and special.”

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then went out to meet them and saw them in the same state which had been described to him by Jibra’eel Ameen. He then kissed both of their faces and stated, “I swear by that Divine Being in Whose Power is my life, if all the oceans became ink, if all the trees became pens, if all of the heavens and the earth became pages, in spite of this, they would be unable to record your greatness and your reward.” (Ar Rouad)

Sadrul Afaadil, Hadrat Moulana Na’eemudeen Muradabadi – may Allah be pleased with him – in the Khazaa’inul Irfaan explains that, “This was at that moment when all of them were themselves in great need of food. It is a very famous story. It is reported that once Imam Hasan – may Allah be pleased with him – and Imam Husain – may Allah be pleased with him – became very ill. The three of them then kept fast for three days as a form of Nazr so that Imam Hasan – may Allah be pleased with him – and Imam Husain – may Allah be pleased with him – could become well. Three meaning Hadrat Ali, Sayyidah Fathima and their female servant named Fiddah. Allah Almighty then blessed Imam Hasan – may Allah be pleased with him – and Imam Husain – may Allah be pleased with him – with good health. When the time came for them to keep the fast, Hadrat Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – then borrowed three Sa’a of barley to make bread from a Jew for Iftaar.

“Hadrat Sayyidah Fathima – may Allah be pleased with her – then decided to make one Sa’a of barley bread for each day to eat at the time of Iftaar. However, when the time of Iftaar came and they had placed the bread in front of them, the first day, a poor person knocked on the door, the second day an orphan knocked on the door and on the third day, a prisoner knocked on the door. On all three days, this bread was given to each person and they only made Iftaar with water and nothing else and continued fasting the next day.”
