It is mentioned that once, in the era of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar bin Abdul Aziz – may Allah be pleased with him – there was a severe drought.

A delegation of Arabs then approached Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar bin Abdul Aziz – may Allah be pleased with him – and they also nominated a person among them to be their representative. This person then approached the Khalifah and said to him, “O Ameerul Mo’mineen! We have approached you with a great need. Without grain and crops, the skin on our body has become attached to our bones due to hunger. There is only salvation for us from what is to be received from the Baitul Maal. However, at the same time, the wealth of the Baitul Maal also has three conditions. This is either the wealth which belongs to Allah Almighty, either it belongs to you or it belongs to the people. If this wealth belongs to Allah Almighty, then He is certainly independent of this wealth. If it belongs to you, then we kindly request that you help us with this charity and Allah Almighty certainly loves those who are charitable. If however, this belongs to others, then this should be given back to them.”

When the eminent Khalifah heard these words, he became to weep. He then looked at the person said, “There is no doubt that you are exactly the same as people have described you.”

He then ordered that these people be helped from the Baitul Maal.

As these people began to leave the court, the eminent Khalifah looked at this person who was the representative of this delegation and who had spoken on their behalf and said, “As you have made me aware of the needs of the poor in this land, in like manner, also present my words and my needs in the Divine Court of Allah Almighty.”

This poor Arab then picked up his hand and looking at the sky, he declared, “O Allah Almighty Who is my Creator. Through Your Greatness and Majesty do the same to Umar bin Abdul Aziz as he has done with your servants.”

Before he had even completed his words, suddenly it began to rain and a large container appeared from the sky and broke into pieces. Everyone then noticed that there was a piece of paper which appeared from this container. On this paper the following words were written, “This is a notice from Allah Almighty to ‘Umar bin Abdul Aziz that he is safe from the Fire of Hell.” (Nawaadir Al Qalyubi).
