It is mentioned that once the famous scholar Hadrat Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abdullah Tustari – May Allah have mercy upon him – came to visit the famous Muhaddith Imam Abu Daud – May Allah have mercy upon him – the compiler of Sunan Abu Daud. The latter displayed immense respect for Hadrat Sahl bin Abdullah – May Allah have mercy upon him – and not only did he stand with respect, but he also made the famous scholar sit on his chair. When everyone had sat, Hadrat Sahl bin Abdullah – May Allah have mercy upon him – mentioned, “I come with a special request and as long as you do not agree to fulfil this request of mine, I will not present that request to you.”
Hadrat Imam Abu Daud – May Allah have mercy upon him – replied that he was prepared to fulfil this request. Hadrat Sahl bin Abdullah – May Allah have mercy upon him – then declared, “It is my request that you expose the blessed tongue through which you mention the blessed Ahadith of the Holy Prophet – May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – so that I am allowed to kiss it.” When the great Imam exposed his tongue, Hadrat Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abdullah Tustari – May Allah have mercy upon him – kissed the tongue of the great Imam. (Ibn Kalakan, 1/214)
From this, we can only imagine the immense respect and reverence these great scholars had for the words of the Holy Prophet – May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. Again, we ask that if this is the reverence they displayed for the mere words of the Holy Prophet – May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – imagine the respect and reverence they displayed for the blessed being of the Holy Prophet – May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him?
*One day, the King presented himself in the court of Hadrat Moulana Fakhrudeen Chisti – May Allah have mercy upon him – and the Saint displayed respect for him according to his normal behaviour. Thereafter, whoever appeared in the court of this Saint, he displayed immense respect and love for them.
The King then left this court and entered the court of Hadrat Khawaja Mazhar Mirza Jaane Janaan Nakhshabandi – May Allah have mercy upon him. However, this Saint displayed no respect for the King.
The King then left this court and entered the court of Shah Wali’ullah Muhaddith Dehlwi – May Allah have mercy upon him. This Saint displayed immense respect for the King. However, when the advisor of the King arrived, Shah Wali’ullah – May Allah have mercy upon him – displayed no respect for him and when an ordinary servant of the King arrived thereafter, Shah Waliullah – May Allah have mercy upon him – displayed respect for him.
The King was surprised by these different types of behaviour displayed and asked Hadrat Shah Wali’ullah Muhaddith Dehlwi – May Allah have mercy upon him – to explain this to him. The Saint replied, “Hadrat Moulana Fakhrudeen Chisti is on the station of Tauheed-e-Wujudi, he is able to see the Divine Manifestation in everything whether it is little or large. Hence, he respects everyone. Hadrat Mirza Saheb, is on the station of Tauheed-e-Shuhudi, therefore, he is completely drowned in the Divine Manifestation which he sees and therefore recognizes no one and respects no one. As for this servant, since I am confined to the rules of Shari’ah and abide by them, and since you are a leader among the Muslims, I have displayed respect for you. As for your advisor, since he has an inclination towards Shiasm, therefore to me, he is not entitled for any respect. As for your servant who arrived, he is a Haafizul Quran, hence I displayed respect for him. (Hayat-e-A’la Hadrat. 1/192)
This has always been the practise of the rightly guided ‘Ulama of the Ahle Sunnah was Jamaah. If they saw someone with corrupt beliefs, they displayed no respect or friendship for that person no matter how close a family member that person was. In fact, it is mentioned that once, someone saw Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mubarak – May Allah have mercy upon him – in a dream and asked him how he had been treated by Allah Almighty. He replied, “The Almighty Allah only reprimanded me for one action and because of this, I was made to stand for thirty years. Once, I looked at a religiously misled person (a non Sunni) with affection and because of this the Almighty Allah reprimanded me for displaying respect for this person who was His enemy.” (Ruhul Bayan, 3/126)
In like manner, once, someone sent Salaams to Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn ‘Umar – May Allah be please with them. However, when he received this Salaam, he mentioned to the person who had delivered this Salaam, “When you return, do not convey my Salaam to him because is he religiously corrupt.”
No matter how powerful or influential a person is, we see that the rightly guided ‘Ulama never ever displayed respect for those who were religiously misguided. When we look at the example of Shah Wali’ullah Muhaddith Dehlwi – May Allah have mercy upon him – we see this clearly displayed. He clearly mentioned to the King that since his advisor was a Shia or someone who had an inclination towards Shiasm, he could not display respect for him. Sadly, in the present time, we find that so-called religious leaders are sitting, mixing, eating and visiting every type of religiously corrupt person on earth without any fear of the consequences. This is the new disease which is called Sulla Kulliyat.
