Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – narrates:

 

Once I visited the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and greeted him. He was resting on a piece of mat made from date threads. In fact, the signs (of this roughness) were seen on his blessed body. When I looked around his room, there was nothing else which I could see. In one corner, there were three leather pieces which were still fresh.

 

I said to him, “O Prophet of Allah! Please make Du’a that Allah Almighty gives you in abundance. In fact, the people of Persia and Rome have been given in abundance even though they do not accept Allah Almighty.”

 

The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – was laying down and when he heard these words, he arose and stated, “O the son Khattab! Until now, are you still in doubt? That which they have desired has been given to them in the life of this world.”

 

When I heard these words, I said, “O Prophet of Allah, please make Istighfaar for me.” (In other words, please seek pardon for me in the Divine Court of Allah Almighty for these words which I have uttered). (abridged, Sahih Muslim Shareef)
