It is reported that when the battle took place between the Romans and the Persians, the Arabs who worshipped idols also supported the Persians because they were also idol-worshippers. However, the Muslims were in favour of the Romans winning because they considered them as the Ahle Kitab. This battle took place near Syria and in this battle, the Persians were victorious. When this happened, the Arabs in Mecca were very happy and they started to say that they supported the Persians because they worshipped the fire while they themselves worshipped idols, hence in a way, they were brothers in religion. They also mentioned to the Muslims, that since they were also considered as the Ahle Kitab, they own brothers in faith, were now defeated. They started to claim that their brothers in faith had defeated the brothers of the Muslim. When this was mentioned, the following verse of the Qur’an was revealed. In Rum (30), verse 2.3.4:

“The Romans have been subdued. In the nearby land and after their subjugation they will soon overcome. In a few years.”

When this verse was revealed, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – informed the Kuffaar of Mecca that they should not rejoice so quickly and that very soon the Persians would be defeated by the Romans.

At that moment, it did not seem possible that the Romans would defeat the Persians. When the great Muslim uttered these words, Ubay bin Khalf stood up and promised that he is placing a hundred camels as a bet and that if within nine years, the Romans had defeated the Persians, he would hand over a hundred camels to Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him.

It must also be remembered that at that stage in Islam, gambling had not yet been outlawed. However, such is the Divine Power of Allah Almighty that within seven years on the day when the treaty of Hudaybiyyah was been enacted, the Romans defeated the Persians. It was also the 6th year of Hijrah. At that time, as per the agreement, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – asked the sons of Ubay bin Khalf to hand over the hundred camels because this heretic had already died before that. When these camels were received by him, the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then commanded Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – to give all the camels away as charity and not to keep a single thing for himself or spend any money from this on himself. (Madaarik, Khaazin, Khazaa’inul Irfaan).

It also took the enemies of Islam in Mecca by surprise because after the first battle, the Romans were terribly defeated and it did not seem possible that they would ever return to the battlefield, yet, within a short span of only seven years, they did not only return, but they also defeated the Persians. This is the Knowledge of the Unseen presented in the Qur’an and also proves without a shadow of doubt that this is the Divine Word of Allah Almighty.
