The world recognizes Allama Khaleel Ahmed Nahwi as one of the authorities on Arabic grammar and syntax. Yet, very few people are aware that he enjoyed such an immense stature that kings and rulers used to visit him regularly and present thousands of Dinars to him as a gift, but he never used to accept anything from anyone. He used to eat dry bread and sit on his grass mat the entire day. He spent all of his time in seeking and teaching this specific branch of knowledge and in the Ibadah of Allah Almighty. He also had a habit that one year, he used to perform the Hajj and the following year, when he heard of any Jihad, he used to join the Muslims in that Jihad. (Tadkiratul Huffaaz, 4/123)

 

What can we say about the immense stature of these past ‘Ulama of Islam? The amount of Ibadah they performed can only be described as a miracle in itself. When we look at these eminent souls of Islam, we can do nothing but bow down our heads is shame. In fact, in today’s time when the ‘Ulama are called the inheritors of the Prophets, they should actually do an introspection to see whether they actually deserve this title or not. We make Du’a that Allah Almighty makes us true inheritors of this blessed knowledge. Ameen.
