It is reported that Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – nominated Hadrat Sayyiduna Salman Farsi – may Allah be pleased with him – as the Governor of Madaa’in.
However, the eminent companion, Hadrat Sayyiduna Salman Farsi – may Allah be pleased with him, continued to wear ordinary woollen clothing and eat unrefined barley bread. In other words, his reputation as the supreme leader of the Muslims in a specific region, did not have any effect on him.
When it was time for Hadrat Sayyiduna Salman Farsi – may Allah be pleased with him – to pass away, he began to weep. When Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’ad bin Abi Waqqas – may Allah be pleased with him – asked him the reason for crying, he replied, “I heard the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – state that there is a valley in the Hereafter and only those people will be able to cross over this valley who do not have excess weight with them. Look around me and the goods which surround me.”
However, the amazing thing is that when they looked at the items he had left behind after he had passed away, it consisted of only a small basin, a small bucket, a small water bottle and nothing else. In spite of this, Hadrat Sayyiduna Salman Farsi – may Allah be pleased with him – still had fear that he is not questioned by the Allah Almighty for carrying immense items from the world. The blessed people in this Hadith signifies those people who chose others over themselves and had completely no interest in the world or anything wordily. (Al Khulud)
