It is reported that once Hadrat Khadir – peace be upon him – was sitting on the sea shore when someone approached him. This person said to him, “I am asking you in the Name of the Allah to please give me something.”
When Hadrat Khadir – peace be upon him – heard this, he fell unconscious. When he regained consciousness, he said to the person, “I am only the owner of my own being and self and because you asked me in the Name of the Divine Creator, I hereby donate myself and being to you and give you permission to sell and take the money for yourself.”
This person took Hadrat Khadir – peace be upon him – to the market and sold him as a slave not realizing who this person was. The person who bought him was someone named Saahim bin Arqam. He took Hadrat Khadir – peace be upon him – to his house and he also had a garden next to his house. He then ordered Hadrat Khadir – peace be upon him – to dig some sand from the nearby mountain and add this sand to the garden. Again, he did not know who his new slave was.
Bear in mind that this mountain was also about nine kilometres away from the house. This person then went about doing his own work. Hadrat Khadir – peace be upon him – then continued his work. When Saahim returned, he asked his people whether they had given the new slave any food and they said that they had even seen the new slave the entire day.
This person then took the food and went in search of the new slave. He then found that most of the sand had already been placed in the garden and his new slave was standing on one side reading his Salaah. When he saw this, he was extremely surprised. He then appraoched this person and asked him to reveal his true identity.
Hadrat Khadir – peace be upon him – then fell unconscious and when he regained his senses, he revealed that he was Khidir. When Saahim heard this, he was extremely shocked and profusely asked pardon for his disrespect. He also made a Du’a to Allah Almighty not to punish him because he was unaware of the real identity of this slave.
As he left Saahim and was walking on the sea shore, Hadrat Khadir – peace be upon him -saw someone who was making Du’a in the following words, “O Allah! Please free Khidir from his bondage and also accept his taubah.” Hadrat Khadir – peace be upon him – asked this person who he was and he replied that his name was Shadun.
This person asked Hadrat Khadir – peace be upon him – his identity and he replied that he was Khidir. This person then informed him, “O Khidr! You have chosen the life of this world because you have built a house for yourself.”
In fact, Hadrat Khadir – peace be upon him – had built a small shelter for himself on the sea shore so that he could perform his Ibadah and he had also planted a tree so that he could also get some shade. However, the moment he stood under this tree, he heard a voice say to him, “O Khidr! You have chosen the world over the Hereafter because you are now making SAJDAH under the shade of this tree.”
Hadrat Khadir – peace be upon him – then asked this person Shadun, (who was in most likelihood an Angel) to make Du’a for him in the Divine Court of Allah Almighty. It is said that after this, the Taubah of Hadrat Khadir – peace be upon him – was accepted.
