We will present a short description of certain eminent Muhaditheen in this regard.

 

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali bin Abdullah bin Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – is the youngest son of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them. His mother is Zarr’a binte Mashrah. He was also considered as one of the most handsome among the Quraish. He used to also use mehndi in his hair. It is said that he was born in 40 A.H. on that night in which Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – was martyred in Kufah.

 

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali bin Abdullah bin Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – family lived in Madina Shareef and he is considered as one of the eminent Muhaddith of the Taaba’een period. He learnt Hadith from his blessed father and also from Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – and many other blessed companions. Among his students were his son Imam Mohammed bin Ali, Imam Zuhri – may Allah be pleased with them – etc.

 

Although Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali bin Abdullah bin Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – was an eminent Muhaddith, he also narrated very few Ahadith. He used to spend most of his time in Ibadah and he is said to have performed a thousand rak’ah of Nafil Salaah every day. In fact, due to his immense Ibadah, people actually began to refer to him as “Sajjaad”.

 

It is mentioned that his enthusiasm for Ibadah began when he saw the immense Ibadah which was performed by the blessed grandson of Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani – may Allah be pleased with him, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Abbaan – may Allah be pleased with him.

 

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali bin Abdullah bin Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – thought to himself that he was certainly closer to the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – in family and blood and therefore, he himself should be a better example to others. The moment this thought appeared to him, he retired from teaching and choose a life of seclusion and spent his days and night in Ibadah. According to ibn Mudaini, Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali bin Abdullah bin Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – passed away in 117 A.H. (Tahzeeb)

 

Hadrat Sayyiduna Umar bin Haani Ansi’s– may Allah be pleased with him title was “Abul Waleed”. He was from Damascus and was Daraani. He also considered as being among the eminent Muhaditheen of Syria and was noted for his piety and immense Ibadah. In the field of Hadith, he attained knowledge from Hadrat Sayyiduna Ameer Mu’awiyah, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with them – etc. He is also the teacher of Imam Abdur bin Thabit, Imam Uthman bin Abi ‘Aatikah, Saeed bin Basheer – may Allah be pleased with them – etc. He is also reported to have performed a thousand rak’ah of nafil every day and every day, he used to recite a hundred thousand times “Subhanallah wa bihamdihi subhaanalla hil adheem.”

 

Hadrat Sayyiduna Umar bin Haani Ansi – may Allah be pleased with him – was martyred by Khaarij named Safar bin Habeeb and his head was placed on a spear and paraded around the city. It is mentioned that one of the people in the crowd shouted at this person of Hell, “You are certainly an unlucky person. If only you knew whose head it was that you were parading.” He was martyred in 127 A.H. (Tahzeeb)

 

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ubaidullah bin Abi Jafer Misri’s– may Allah be pleased with him titles were “Abu Bakr” and “Faqe-e-Misr”. He is also a teacher of many of the eminent Muhaditheen of Egypt. Ibn Sa’ad has mentioned that he was a much respected Muhaddith and one of the most learned jurist of his era. Ibn Yunus has also echoed the same words and there are many miracles attributed to him in Egypt.

 

One of Hadrat Sayyiduna Ubaidullah bin Abi Jafer Misri’s – may Allah be pleased with him – famous miracles is that he took part in Jihad on a sea voyage and the ship on which they were was destroyed through a severe storm. Through the Divine Mercy of Allah Almighty, he was saved with six other people. They were thrown on a large piece of timber and continued to float on this timber. It is mentioned that when these six people felt hungry, six large leaves suddenly appeared on this dry timber and these people broke these leaves and began to chew it. By doing so, their hunger and thirst immediately disappeared. Whenever they felt hungry, again another six large leaves appeared on this dry timber and they again broke these leaves and chewed it and their hunger and thirst disappeared. A few days later, they were rescued by another boat which came alongside them. Ibn Sa’ad mentions that this Saint passed away in either 135 A.H. or 136 A.H. (Tahzeeb)

 

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Aun’s – may Allah be pleased with him title was “Abu Aun” and he was from Basrah. He was blessed with seeing Hadrat Sayyiduna Imam Malik – may Allah be pleased with him. He also achieved knowledge of Hadith from Imam Ebrahim Nakhi, Imam Mohammed bin Sereen, Imam Hasan Basri Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Aun – may Allah be pleased with them –  etc. Among his students were eminent scholars and Saints like Imam ‘Amash, Imam Sufyan Thouri, Imam Waqee – may Allah be pleased with them – etc.

 

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Aun – may Allah be pleased with him – gathered a large collection of Ahadith and was considered a very authentic authority in this field. Hisham bin Hannaan also admits that he had never seen the likes of someone like him. In fact, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mubaarak – may Allah be pleased with him – once said, “It is my wish that I only leave the blessed company of Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Aun – may Allah be pleased with him – when I am about to leave this world or when he is about to leave the world.”

 

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Aun – may Allah be pleased with him – was extremely severe against the enemies of the Ahle Sunnah wa Jamaah and unanimously accepted as a great authority.

 

He fasted his entire life by leaving one day and fasting the next day. Mohammed bin Fidaa mentions that, “I was once blessed with seeing the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – in a dream. The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – declared, ‘You people should continue to visit Abdullah bin Aun and consider it necessary to be in his company because he is a beloved servant of the Allah Almighty.’” He passed away in 151 A.H. (Tahzeeb)
