Ibn Abu Zarr narrates that when the Hujjaj used to arrive in the Haram Shareef, Imam Sufyan bin Ayniyah – may Allah be pleased with him – used to sit on a high platform watching the Hujjaj.

One day, a person who had great interest in science of Ahadith approached the eminent scholar of Ahadith and asked him to mention a few Ahadith to him. The great Imam then mentioned a few Ahadith to this person. The person requested that he be informed of a few more Ahadith and again the great Imam mentioned a few more Ahadith. However, on the third occasion when the person asked him to mention a few Ahadith, the great Imam pushed him backwards. Since he was sitting on a high place, this person fell into a deep ditch. When the people saw what had happened, they surrounded the person and began to say, “Sufyan bin Ayniyah has killed a certain Haji.”

When the rumour became louder, Imam Sufyan bin Ayniyah – may Allah be pleased with him – became highly concerned about this. He was also worried why he had done this in the first place. He then went into the ditch and took the head of the person on his lap.

He then asked him, “What injury has been caused to you?”

However, the person continued to shake his legs and froth was also appearing from his mouth. When the people saw this, they became even more certain that the great Imam had killed the Haji.

When the Imam Sufyan bin Ayniyah – may Allah be pleased with him – heard these comments, he said to the person, “Please stand up, are you not listening to what people are saying about me?”

However, the person softly mentioned to the great Imam, “I swear by Allah Almighty that I will never wake up until and unless you do not mention to me one hundred Ahadith through the Sanad of Imam Zuhri and Amar bin Dinaar – may Allah be pleased with them.”

When the eminent Imam heard this, he had no choice but to mention these one hundred Ahadith. (Kitaabul Azkiyah, 138)

In other words, the Muslims of the past were so interested in seeking more knowledge that they made all types of excuses to acquire knowledge. On the other hands, the Muslims of the present era are such that they make all types of excuses not to acquire knowledge. Some also travelled miles in search of knowledge. Others came for Hajj with the purpose of acquiring knowledge.

It is sad to see that in the present age, most Muslims go for Hajj for the purpose of getting the best bargains from the market place. The thought of acquiring knowledge and educating themselves of the actual history of Islam and the history of the Islamic relics which still exist there are the last thing on their minds.

It is also a tragedy that the corrupt Saudi government has also made certain that the glorious past of the Muslim in the form of Islamic relics are also destroyed so that Muslims do not remember their glorious history and only remember the Saudi heretics and the their English masters. Muslims should continue to search for the glorious history of Islam so that they are not hoodwinked into believing things which have nothing to do with Islam.
