Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Musayyib – may Allah be pleased with him – is considered as one of the greatest Islamic scholars of his era. He is also considered as “Sayyitut Taaba’een”. He saw many of the blessed Ashaab and received spiritual training and grace from them. Besides being a scholar of Hadith, he was also well learned in Tafseer.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Musayyib – may Allah be pleased with him – was so learned that it is mentioned that he used to also deliver an Islamic verdict in the presence of the Ashaab. He also had no fear to speak the truth. This is the reason that many rulers of the day were very severe and cruel on him. Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Musayyib – may Allah be pleased with him – was also very learned in the interpretation of dreams. Hadrat Sayyiduna Ali bin Mudaini – may Allah be pleased with him – mentions that, “I have never met someone as learned as Sa’eed bin Musayyib”. He passed away in 94 A.H. (Sayr ‘Alaamun Nublah)

The same has been mentioned about him by Hadrat Sayyiduna Qatadah – may Allah be pleased with him. Hadrat Sayyiduna Sa’eed bin Musayyib – may Allah be pleased with him – has also stated that, “Besides the Holy Prophet Peace – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Hadrat Sayyiduna Umar – may Allah be pleased with them – there were no one more learned than me in knowledge.” (Sayr ‘Alaamun Nublah)

Besides having immense knowledge of Shari’ah, he made sure that he practised on what he knew. In the Hulyatul Awliyah, it is mentioned that he never missed Congregational Salaah for forty years. At the same time, whenever someone asked him about any Hadith Shareef, he displayed immense respect when giving an answer or explaining any Hadith Shareef.

It is mentioned that once, he was very ill and someone asked him about a certain Hadith Shareef. He then asked the person to help him raise up from the bed. However, the person mentioned that since he was very ill, he should continue to rest on the bed. He replied, “Please help me to sit up. When something is been asked about the blessed words of the beloved Habeeb – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him –and I should lay down, how is this possible?”
